FAQs:

How does 23andMe DNA testing work?

After you provide a saliva sample, 23andMe uses genotyping to analyze your DNA. This means we look at specific locations in your genome that are known to differ between people. We then turn those results into personalized genetic reports on everything from ancestry composition to traits to genetic health risks. Note that genotyping is different from DNA sequencing, which looks at every letter in a particular stretch of DNA.

Who can use 23andMe?

Most adults who are able to provide saliva samples can use the 23andMe kit. However there are some considerations that can complicate the DNA accuracy. Check out our Terms of Service for more info on those cases.

Do 23andMe DNA test kits expire?

We encourage customers to provide their sample before the "Collect saliva by" date on the side of the collection tube. If your sample collection kit is lost or damaged, or if it has expired, please contact customer care to assist you with getting a replacement kit.

Why should I choose 23andMe?

There are many benefits of DNA testing, including finding relatives, learning whether you have genetic variants you could pass onto your children, and receiving personalized insights into your health and ancestry. 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service offers 150+ DNA reports that do just that. In addition to taking greater control of your own health and digging deeper into your ancestry, you can also opt in to participate in research that could help fuel scientific discoveries that benefit the larger community.

We're also committed to providing you with a safe place where you can learn about your DNA knowing your privacy is protected. 23andMe has sold 12+ million kits, and with each and every one of those, privacy has been our number one priority.

This app is good, but some pages take a while to load. The health reports are fine, but the survey questions can be irritating sometimes. Like the one about cramps after exercise. I skip those kind of questions because for me, it's about routine and habits, not genetics.

This app is pretty good and it has a lot of info. But there's a bug I need to mention. When I send messages to my contacts on Android Q, the keyboard covers up the message area. It makes it hard for me to see what I'm typing. It would be great if this could be fixed.

The app loads slowly and the family tree feature is not user-friendly. The product provides valuable insights that I trust, but navigating through them is confusing. The chat function definitely needs improvement. Overall, the app's user experience is lacking, so I prefer using the browser instead. However, I have no complaints about the web version, it is excellent and the product itself is top-notch.

I really liked using the app because I could find new DNA matches. It was so convenient to chat with them and reply to their messages without having to switch to a computer. Getting more clues about who my matches are would be awesome. Sometimes I got useful information by messaging my matches.

This app is easy to use and navigate. I haven't got my results yet, they're due on March 8th at the earliest. I'll share my experience after I get them. The app seems to be working fine so far though. It helped me find my biological father. Totally worth it.

Using this website is really simple and you can move around easily. The only thing I would suggest is improving the buttons that take you back to the previous page.

Recently, I tried out a different company's DNA test because I am adopted and hoping to find information about my family. Overall, I found that the 23andMe experience provided me with more detailed and helpful information compared to the other company. The only thing the other company did better was pinpointing the specific regions where my Native American genes originated from. But when it comes to DNA testing, I definitely prefer 23andMe.

Using this app is great because I can see how I am similar to my relatives. Since I was adopted, it helps me feel connected to my family. It would be nice if there was a feature that automatically shares my information with relatives without them having to request access.
