Have you ever noticed that some chargers and USB cables charge your device faster than others? You can now test this using Ampere. This app allows you to measure the charging and discharging current of your battery. Its PRO features include widgets, notifications, alerts on your device, and Android Wear alerts. Please note that not all devices are supported due to some devices lacking the necessary measurement chip or interface. The app is not designed for precise milliampere accuracy but rather to help you determine which Charger/USB cable combination works best for your device.
To use the app, simply start it and wait approximately 10 seconds for it to display the charging or discharging current. The current displayed is influenced by factors such as the type of charger (USB/AC/Wireless), USB cable, phone model, ongoing tasks, display brightness, WiFi and GPS status. It is recommended not to rely solely on the app's readings as they may not be scientifically accurate.
If you encounter a situation where the app always shows 0mA, you can switch to the "Old measurement method" in settings. This forces the app to use the older measurement interface on applicable Lollipop devices. Some Samsung phones might only display the maximum possible charging current for the given USB cable/charger setup due to firmware limitations.
The app calculates an average value from multiple measurements and excludes extremes to provide a more stable reading. Keep in mind that different companies use varying battery types and hardware, making it challenging to obtain precise results for your particular charger.
LiPo batteries do not draw the maximum current throughout the entire charging process. When the battery is nearly fully charged, the charging current decreases significantly. For further information on LiPo batteries, you can refer to provided resources and tutorials.
Certain phones/ROMs are compatible with the app when using the "Old measurement method," while others are reported not to work properly. If your device falls into the latter category, it is not the fault of the app but likely owing to your phone's lack of support for this type of measurement.
In case the app is not functioning correctly on your device with an Android version prior to Lollipop, please refer to specific XDA developer forum threads for troubleshooting steps and support. Make sure to check the FAQ for additional information.
