Android Auto Updates

In a January 2023 update, Google rolled out a new split-screen layout. This functionality allows users to see navigation, media, and communication apps simultaneously on the screen. Now you can change your music without having to give up your view of Google Maps. If you receive an incoming text, that will also appear on the screen.

How Do I Use Google Assistant?

Google Assistant is Android Auto's version of Siri—you can issue voice commands while you're driving. To access Google Assistant, say "Hey, Google," give the steering wheel voice button a sustained press, or tap the microphone icon in the bottom right corner on the car's screen. Then you can ask Google to play music from your playlist, navigate to your favorite restaurant, tell you what's on your calendar, or announce the weather.

Can I Text Using Android Auto?

You can use voice commands to send text messages with Android Auto. Tell Google Assistant to send a message to someone from your contact list, and you'll be prompted to say your message. If you receive a message while you're driving, it'll show up on your touchscreen. Google can read it to you, and you can reply via voice.

There’s another option, too, thanks to Google’s new on-screen shortcut replies. When a friend texts you, Google Assistant will now suggest simple replies, and you can tap one of the options on the screen and send it off. With Google Assistant, you can also share your estimated time of arrival with just the tap of the screen.

It functions perfectly when operational. Lately, it's been posing numerous issues with voice commands, repeatedly displaying the message "something went wrong, try again later." Also, why does Android Auto necessitate my phone to be connected to a charger? Wouldn't it be more convenient if it operated through Bluetooth? I'm concerned whether continuous charging will ultimately damage the phone's charging port or battery.

I got my hands on an Android Auto wireless dongle, which has made a huge difference. Although there are a couple of minor glitches remaining (such as a slight delay in lowering the volume of my music while the navigation is unmuted), I can tolerate them. While it functions well in connecting to my car for music and calls over Bluetooth, it no longer links when I use a USB cord. This becomes quite annoying particularly when I require navigation, but my car and phone refuse to communicate via cable.

Great driving application. Functions smoothly. When using the Android Auto feature in my truck, I can link my phone and store it in the console without having to use it directly. All essential features are available on the touchscreen. I'd rate it 5 stars if it could notify about incoming texts and provide an option to read them aloud. Having to continuously check for messages on the screen and tapping to listen can cause distractions. Also, adding a "pause" function for Maps would be highly beneficial. The repeated re-calculation for rest stops can be bothersome.

Every time I try to enjoy music, it's smooth sailing. However, each instance an app update occurs or daylight saving time alters, the functionality is disrupted. Unable to link with my car, music access is lost. Moreover, at times, there's no sound during phone calls, despite exhaustive troubleshooting efforts. Although it occasionally operates flawlessly, the inconsistency makes it undependable.

The application facilitates a nearly flawless link between my vehicle and smartphone. However, a notable drawback is the inability to manually synchronize audio volume levels between phone audio and radio. Consequently, switching from Spotify to terrestrial or satellite radio without adjusting the volume beforehand can result in a jarring volume disparity, which is far from ideal for maintaining a safe driving environment. Despite this issue, overall, the application performs admirably well.

In general, the experience is positive. At times, I do feel frustrated when attempting to multitask while driving, like jotting down a reminder, sending a message, selecting a music service, or looking up information. The process often seems cumbersome or goes awry, leading me to abandon the task altogether. I cannot pinpoint whether Google Assistant, Android Auto, Pandora, Sirius XM, or other platforms are to blame, but this exasperates and worries me as it diverts my focus from driving.

Using this is a significant improvement from solely relying on my phone. I appreciate the modernized appearance of each landmark and landscape displayed in real-time. The feature to project this information on the display of a non-navigation-equipped vehicle is truly outstanding. Additionally, having the choice to switch to a full-screen navigation mode or split the screen with music is utterly fantastic!
