What is the Racing Line?
The racing line is the optimal path through a corner on a race circuit, allowing a driver to maintain the highest speed possible. The trajectory of the racing line varies depending on the severity of the corner, the length of the straight that follows, and the type of car being driven. The ultimate goal is to carry as much speed as possible through the braking zone, corner, and onto the next straight.
Key Terms:
Braking Point: The spot where you start braking before entering a corner. Picking the latest braking point while maintaining maximum grip is crucial for a fast lap time.
Turn-In Point: The point where you begin steering into the corner. It's essential to be looking at the apex to know when and how much to turn.
Apex (Clipping Point): The innermost point of the corner, where your car is closest to the inside curb. Hitting the apex correctly allows you to start accelerating again.
Exit Point: The point where your car reaches the outside of the track as you exit the corner. Opening up the steering and increasing throttle here ensures you carry maximum speed onto the straight.
Racing Line Basics:
Brake at the Braking Point: Apply maximum braking force at your braking point, primarily in a straight line.
Focus on the Apex: As you approach the corner, shift your focus to the apex.
Turn-In at the Turn-In Point: Begin steering at the turn-in point, aiming for the apex.
Hit the Apex: Navigate the car to the apex of the ideal racing line.
Accelerate Gradually: As you pass the apex, start applying the throttle.
Open Up the Steering: As you exit the corner, gradually open the steering to reach the exit point.
Geometric Racing Line:
The geometric line represents the shallowest arc through a corner, using the entire width of the track.
It allows for constant speed from turn-in to exit but isn’t the fastest line through most corners.
Tight corners require more steering input and lower speeds, so utilizing the full track width can help maintain speed.
Ideal Racing Line:
The ideal line involves a later turn-in and apex, allowing for a straighter exit.
This line prioritizes exit speed, which is crucial for gaining time on the following straight.
Although the car needs to turn more sharply and has a slower minimum speed, the overall time gained on the straight makes this line faster.
Difference in Racing Lines (Slow vs. Fast Corners):
In slower corners, the ideal racing line differs significantly from the geometric line because exit speed is more critical.
In faster corners, the ideal line is closer to the geometric line since the emphasis is on maintaining momentum rather than accelerating.
By understanding and mastering the racing line, drivers can significantly improve their lap times by optimizing their speed through corners and onto the straights.
