The Authenticator app is a tool that secures your online accounts by generating secure 2FA (two-factor authentication) tokens on your device. It is a user-friendly and free application that creates Time-based One-time Passwords (TOTP) for Two Factor Authentication (2FA). This MFA Authenticator app adds an extra layer of protection to safeguard your accounts against hackers. You can utilize the 2FA Backup feature to store your keys in the cloud for easy access in case of device loss or damage. Additionally, you have the option to input your secret key manually or use a QR code for convenience.
How to use
Download and install:
Open Google Play Store or App Store, search for "Google Authenticator" or "Microsoft Authenticator", download and install it on your device.
Add account:
After opening the app, click the "+" button and select "Scan QR code" or "Manually enter key" to add an account.
If using Google Authenticator, log in to the online account that needs to be protected (such as Google, Facebook, etc.), find the "Security" or "Two-factor verification" option in the account settings, select "Use Authenticator", and then generate a QR code.
Set up two-factor verification:
Use the device camera to scan the QR code, or select "Manually enter" to add account information. The app will generate a one-time verification code for binding.
Each time you log in, enter your username, password, and the one-time verification code generated by the authenticator.
Backup and synchronization:
Google Authenticator supports encrypted backup of verification code data to the cloud through Google account, which can be synchronized on multiple devices.
Microsoft Authenticator supports cloud backup, which is convenient for restoring account credentials on a new device.
Tips for use
Ensure time synchronization:
To ensure the validity of the verification code, the device time needs to be synchronized with the network time.
Backup key:
During the setup process, keep the backup code properly so that you can restore your account when the device is lost or replaced.
Protect key security:
Shared keys are the key to account security and avoid disclosure to unauthorized personnel.
Use biometrics or PIN code:
If you use Microsoft Authenticator, you can set a PIN code or use biometric verification to enhance security.
Check accounts regularly:
Check the account list in the app regularly to ensure that no unauthorized accounts have been added.
Features of the Authenticator app:
- Secure & Private Authentication:
All data within Authenticator is encrypted, maintaining your privacy even when stored in the Google Cloud, ensuring exclusive access to your data.
- Encrypted Backup:
You can create a secure encrypted backup in multi-step two-factor authentication to ensure data accessibility in the event of device loss or replacement.
- Synchronization Across Devices:
Automatically synchronize all your tokens across multiple devices for seamless usage with Autentifikator.
- Two-Factor Authentication:
Enhance account security with 2FA by combining a regular password with a Time-based One-time Password (TOTP) generated by the Authenticator App on your device.
- 2FA Backup:
A forthcoming remote backup service will enable secure storage of service keys in an Authenticator Backup cloud-based system, facilitating recovery if your phone is lost. This feature will also allow code generation on different devices for cross-device sharing.
- Touch ID or Biometric ID Authorization:
Validate your identity using Touch ID or Face ID, and generate one-time tokens required for logging into your online accounts.
- Android Device Synchronization:
Upon setup via an online account, Authenticator efficiently operates across various mobile devices, enabling login from multiple devices simultaneously.
- No Stored Passwords:
The app generates single Time-based One-time Passwords (TOTP) on the user's phone offline, significantly heightening login security.
- Compatibility with Popular Accounts:
Support (but not affiliated) for verification with major services like Facebook, Google Chrome, Coinbase, Binance, Playstation, Steam, Amazon, Paypal, Gmail, Microsoft, Instagram, Discord, Epic, Roblox, and many others, including 8-digit tokens.
