Game Modes
1. Story Mode
The main game mode of Black Clover M is also the most important one. Players must ensure Story Mode progression to unlock new features and playable content. Even the other game modes unlock as you finish more and more chapters of the Black Clover M story.
It’s not just about story progression, though.
Clearing chapters results in valuable in-game resources that players can use to summon new characters and enhance current ones.
While the game modes might be enticing, you can never really move away from Story Mode if you want to enjoy the best of what Black Clover M has to offer. And let me tell you it has A LOT to offer!
2. Arena
No RPG is complete without a PvP mode, and Black Clover M has a great PvP mode. Players can not only enjoy 1v1 battles but also part-take in Squad Battles.
In the Arena, players can test out their builds and skills against real-time players in 4v4 battles.
There’s a “season” system in place in the Arena mode where individual rankings are calculated. As wins or losses stack up, players get promoted or demoted to leagues.
Every match results in some reward. No prize for guessing that higher leagues = better rewards.
3. Challenge Lobby
Complete the first few missions of the Story Mode, and you’ll unlock the Challenge Lobby. Within this lobby, you can play Normal Challenges and Limited Challenges.
Normal Challenges are the easy ones, best for farming resources like EXP, Yul, Gear pieces, and similar materials. You can pick them up at any time, play the same challenge any number of times, and fill your inventory to the neck.
Limited Challenges are a different story.
Along with a time limit, these challenges have an attempt limit as well. Failure to complete a Limited Challenge within the attempt limit means you are left empty-handed.
The challenges change nearly every day. But, high difficulty also means higher reward. Once you have multiple strong teams, go for the Limited Challenges over the Normal Challenges.
4. Quests
This one is a treat for Black Clover anime fans.
Players can relive the Spade Kingdom Raid arc in Black Clover M by playing Quests. It’s a separate game mode that puts players through some advanced challenges while they reminisce over the Black Clover anime days.
Other modes that players can try include Mage’s Path, Citizen’s Request, and Patrol Missions.
These are not the most important, but they can generate decent rewards. The same goes for the Adventure Journal where you can collect Memory Shards and go for some fishing.
Main Mechanics – Combat, Bond, Summonings, & Equipment
As a gacha game with some RPG elements, there’s absolutely no shortage of mechanics in Black Clover M. Turn-based combat, character customization, summoning, stamina, and more- Black Clover M has the works. But, some mechanics play a more important role in the game than others.
Here are the ones you must master for the best experience.
Mastering Combat
Combat is the main ingredient of Black Clover M, and it has a few quirks. We’ll get to them, but first, let’s start with an overview of the combat screen.
Black Clover M has a turn-based combat system, and we all know how that works. But, the slightly different thing about Black Clover M’s turn-based combat is the Turn Order bar.
On the right side of the combat screen, you can see a bar that shows all the fighters currently in combat. The one at the bottom has the next turn. Read from bottom to top, and you can figure out when a character will be ready to act.
Right beside the Turn Order bar are the skill buttons. Every character has 2 Primary Skills, 1 Ultimate, and 1 Partner Attack.
Then, on the bottom of the screen are your characters’ Health Bars and Action Guages.
After an attack the Action Gauge depletes. And once it refills, the character is now ready to act. Keeping an eye on the Turn Order bar and the Action Gauge can really help you strategize your battle plans.
Now, the tricky part; Type/Elemental Advantage.
All Black Clover M characters, called Mages, are categorized into THREE main types.
- Technique
- Sense
- Power
All three of these types have an advantage or a disadvantage over each other. Here’s how it works.
- Technique beats Power.
- Sense beats Technique.
- Power beats Sense.
A special indicator on top of the enemy’s head helps players spot the advantages/disadvantages during combat.
You’ll see a Good, Bad, or Great indicator on top of an enemy depending on your character’s type and the enemy’s character type.
Good means you have no advantage or disadvantage.
Bad means you have a disadvantage. Your attack will do 20% less damage, and your chance of CRIT is 10% lower.
Great means you have a type advantage. Your attack will deal 20% extra damage, and you have a 10% higher chance of a CRIT hit.
Type advantage can be a deciding factor in combat. That’s why it’s important to consider it when choosing your team before the battle.
The game allows you to create and save up to FIVE teams. Once you have enough Mages unlocked, create multiple teams and quickly switch as required.
Creating Bonds, a.k.a Affinity System
In the Mage menu, you’ll find a Bond tab. Here, you’ll see all Mages in Black Clover M and get to check your Bond Level with everyone.
Every character has a maximum Bond Level of 15. You can increase the Bond Level by completing missions with other Mages. Sending gifts to Mages is another good way to increase the Bond level.
By increasing the Bond Level with other Mages, you can get rewards like new costumes, gear, and the precious Black Crystals. Better bonds can also help enhance your Mage stats.
Summons Aplenty
Black Clover M has a multi-layered summoning mechanism. You can summon Mages, Skill Pages, and Friendship points. There are two permanent Summoning options and a few event-related.
- Friendship Summon: Skill Pages and Friendship points.
- Standard Summon: Get one Summon for free every day. Summon Mages and Skill Pages.
- New Rate-Up Summon: Higher chance of summoning a Rate-Up Mage.
- Guaranteed SSR Jump-Start: One-time use and only available to new users.
- Skill Page Summon: Higher chance of Season Skill Page drop.
- Season 1 Rate-Up Summon: Higher chance of Season Mage drop.
Make sure to read up on their probabilities before hitting the “Summon” button.
What’s the Equipment?
There are two types of equipment that Mages can use. One is Gear, and the other is Accessories. Weapons fall under the Gear banner, while necklaces, rings, and robes fall under the Accessories tab.
There is another difference though.
Any Mage can use Gear, but only LR rarity Mages can use Accessories.
Players can Upgrade and Enchant Gear and Accessories to further increase their stats boost. Equipping Gear of the same set provides a multiplier effect as well.
These are the major mechanics that you must master. I hope this guide will help you understand the basics.
Now, before closing this Black Clover M game guide, let’s take a look at the main characters of the game, the Mages. You’ll learn about the rarity levels and abilities of all the Mages in the next section.
Black Clover Mages – Rarity & Abilities
If you’ve seen the anime or read the manga, you’ll go head-to-head with some familiar foes and fight alongside your favorite Black Clover characters.
There are 48 characters in the game right now. All of them are categorized by FIVE abilities- Attacker, Defender, Supporter, Debuffer, and Healer.
Regardless of their role, every Mage has FOUR Skills- 2 Basic Skills, 1 Special Skills, and 1 Combined Attack. Two more Passive skills, called Talents, are unlockable as you enhance Mages.
While the abilities are self-explanatory, there is another aspect of the Mages that needs understanding. I’m talking about the Rarity levels.
All 48 Mages in Black Clover M have one of three Rarity levels- R, SR, and SSR.
The R Rarity mages are not that rare. They have the highest probability (43.5%) of being summoned. Next up, the SR Mages have a 14% probability of summoning. The hardest-to-get Mages are SSR. Their summoning probability is only 2.5%.
There are two more Rarity ranks in the game; UR and LR. There are no Mages in the game that have these Rarity levels. These can only be achieved by ranking up a Mage.
The best part is that regardless of their current Rarity rank, every Mage can be ranked up to UR or LR.
Here’s how the ranking ladder works: R to SR to SSR to UR to LR.
Not all Mages are worth ranking up. That’s why you must focus on a handful and build your teams around them.
Don’t deplete our resources ranking up on Mages that are weak. You might do well against the weaker AI of the first few levels, but you’ll get battered as you enter the tougher chapters of Story Mode and start playing PvP.
