BusyBox merges compact versions of various commonly used UNIX utilities into one small executable file. It serves as an alternative for most of the tools you typically encounter in GNU fileutils, shellutils, and similar categories. While the options available in BusyBox may be limited compared to their full-featured GNU counterparts, they still offer expected functionality and behave similarly. BusyBox supplies a nearly complete environment ideal for any small or embedded system.
The design of BusyBox focuses on size efficiency and resource limitations. Its modular structure allows easy inclusion or exclusion of commands (or features) during the compilation process, facilitating customization for embedded systems. To establish a functioning system, simply add device nodes in /dev, a few configuration files in /etc, along with a Linux kernel.
Denys Vlasenko oversees the maintenance of BusyBox, which operates under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE version 2.
