CBC News App - Your questions answered!

How do I turn on/off alerts?

On Apple devices, go to the Settings icon in the top-left hand corner of the app. Under Notifications, select Manage my alerts and select the alerts (topics and regions) that interest you.

On Android devices, navigate to the Menu icon in the top-left hand corner of the app. Under Manage My Alerts, select the alerts (topics and regions) of interest.

How do I customize my local news settings?

Select the Local tab to add regions from any of our newsrooms across the country. At any time, you can remove or add new regions in your settings, or Android app drawer, in the Manage my regions section. You can also customize your local news alerts here under Manage my alerts.

Can I reorder the regions I’ve selected in my local section?

Yes! In your settings or Android app drawer, go to Manage my regions. You’ll be able to drag and drop the locations and rearrange the order of how your news will appear in the Local tab.

Why aren’t the stories in chronological order?

An editor curates the lineup, listing the stories in order of importance. The app lineup mirrors that of the desktop version of CBCNews.ca.

It is possible to reorder your local news lineup by publishing time or by Editors’ Picks. Toggle the switch left or right to reorder the lineup in your local tab. If you sort “By Time,” the newest stories will appear at the top of the lineup. Currently, this feature exists only in the local news section of the app.

What does Follow Story mean?

Some of our major stories have a “Follow Story” icon. If you tap on the button, you’ll be sent alerts about the story as it develops.

I have used the app for many years. I can't remember it having any major outages. My son and I think highly of CBC and BBC as top sources for trustworthy, unbiased news. While CNN is great at covering natural disasters, their political leanings are evident. I wish there were more analytical articles to delve deeper into the effects of specific events.

Wow, the stories are always fascinating and the writing is top-notch. The selection is fantastic, too. The app is user-friendly and dependable.

There isn't enough variety and it feels one-sided most of the time. The Canadian feel of being neutral seems to be missing. This is Canadian news, so why not have more news that supports Canada? Instead of news about other countries, why not focus on news that's unique and exclusive to Canada? While it's important to talk about events like the Vice President debate, this is Canadian news after all! When I tune in during the morning, I want to hear about Canada. We are not the US, let's embrace our Canadian identity once again!

I really enjoy the CBC's reports, documentaries, interviews, and shows. My radio always plays 1010, and I use the CBC app for news. Thank you for teaching me and sharing relevant and fascinating stories all these years!

The news service and app deliver what they should on a technical level. Sometimes, the news articles have grammar mistakes. The reporting appears reliable, but I don't often compare it with other news sources, so I can't be sure. Overall, though, I feel quite confident in CBC's credibility and trustworthiness.

Ugh, this app is so irritating. I turned off all notifications but it still keeps bothering me with alerts. And most of the time, they're about trivial stuff not even worth my attention. I wouldn't suggest using it. Oh, and an update from April 2, 2020: this app is just awful. Why don't they have a 15-second skip forward or backward option? There are moments when you need to backtrack a bit in a video. But if you drag the slider back, you end up watching more ads. Thumbs down for sure.

So, when I'm reading a cool article with images on the app and I try to scroll by touching near an image, bam! The page jumps back, and then I gotta search for where I was. That's frustrating. Also, when I open an article in that browser thingy, there's way too much stuff eating up space like ads floating around. The space keeps shifting as ads pop up and go away. It's annoying, so I usually just forget about it. Using Android 6.0.1.

The CBC app works really well. I particularly like the black background and white text option, it's a nice touch that I will definitely use. Saving stories is also a great feature and it's better than the Apple version I have. But it would be even better if it could automatically save all the current stories, like my BBC app does in text only.
