Game rules
Chess is a two-player board game. The board consists of 64 black and white squares, divided into 8 rows and 8 columns. Each player controls 16 pieces, including 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops and 8 pawns. Here are the basic rules:
Initial layout of chess pieces:
White side: from left to right, rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook.
Black side: symmetrical layout with white side.
Pawns: located in the second and seventh rows.
Rules for moving chess pieces:
King: can move to any adjacent square (horizontally, vertically, diagonally) at a time.
Queen: can move horizontally, straight or diagonally, without distance limit, but cannot cross other chess pieces.
Rook: can move horizontally or straight, without distance limit, but cannot cross other chess pieces.
Bishop: can only move diagonally, without distance limit, but cannot cross other chess pieces.
Knight: Move in the shape of a "sun", and can pass other pieces.
Pawn: Can only move forward one square, but can choose to move forward two squares in the initial position. Can only move diagonally one square when capturing.
Special rules:
Capturing a passing pawn: When the opponent's pawn chooses to move forward two squares for the first time, and is in the same column as your pawn, your pawn can immediately move diagonally one square to capture the opponent's pawn.
Castling: The king and the rook can swap positions, but certain conditions must be met (the king and the rook have not moved, the king is not in the state of being checked, and the king does not pass through the attacked square during the movement).
Promotion of pawn: When a pawn reaches the opponent's bottom line, it can be promoted to the queen, rook, bishop or knight (usually the queen is chosen because the queen is the most powerful).
Check and checkmate: Attacking the opponent's king is called "checkmate", and the player who is checked must immediately remove the threat. If the threat cannot be removed, it is "checkmate" and the game ends.
Victory and defeat determination:
Checkmate the opponent's king: A side checks the opponent's king and wins.
Surrender: One party can choose to surrender.
Draw: Both parties agree to a draw, or there are specific situations such as three repetitions, the fifty-turn rule (no capture or pawn movement within fifty turns), etc.
Tips
Control the center: Try to control the central area of the board (d4, d5, e4, e5), which is conducive to the movement and attack of the pieces.
Develop pieces: Move the queen, rook, bishop, knight and other pieces from the initial position as soon as possible to play their role.
Protect the king: Complete the king-rook castling as soon as possible and move the king to a safe position.
Structure of the pawns: Pay attention to the layout of the pawns to avoid forming isolated or weak pawns.
Take advantage of the opponent's mistakes: Seize the opponent's mistakes, such as missing the checkmate and exposing important pieces.
Plan and strategy: Don't just focus on the step in front of you, plan several steps in advance and consider the opponent's possible response.
Learn the opening: Mastering some basic opening theories, such as the Italian opening and the Spanish opening, will help you quickly enter the middle game.
Review and learn: After the game, review the game, analyze your mistakes and your opponent's tricks, and keep learning and improving.
