General Tips

As is the case with any idle game, Clicker Heroes is perpetuated largely by mathematical formulas that generate new hero levels, stages, etc. as they become necessary. Because these formulas, by necessity, make progress in this game rather predictable, they allow a number of rules to come up, which you can follow to ensure advancing through the game at optimal speed.

Transcending

Due to the 1.0 update, the goal of Clicker Heroes has changed dynamically, and players are now aiming to get the most Ancient Souls per hour instead of the previous goal of getting the most Hero Souls per hour. For those players who have not transcended yet, transcend now, unless your HZE (Highest Zone Ever) isn't 300, which you must get to before the first transcendence.

The time to transcend is when you have done 3-4 ascensions that have gained you ancient souls. This means to start counting down when your last ascension has gained you more hero souls than your last transcension. When your Transcendent Power becomes 24% or more, the proper time to transcend will be when you can no longer maintain 2 mobs per zone from Kumawakamaru after you have already obtained 2 mobs per zone in that transcension.

Keep in mind what will happen after every transcendence:

Outsiders and allocating Ancient Souls

Here are a few mathematical relationships between outsider levels to keep your Ancient Souls allocation properly balanced:

Xyliqil is completely useless. Although it may seem like a 50% boost is a lot, in reality, it will only boost your HZE by 1 zone. Every soul spent in Xyliqil is a soul wasted.

Phandoryss provides a flat 100% DPS per level. It is recommended to level it if you cannot afford anything else since unspent Ancient Souls do nothing. Even with only 2 or 3 levels of it, you do not need to use a Quick Ascension after transcending. Phandoryss' effect is not very powerful, but he can be useful to speed up the beginning of runs.

Chor'goloth reduces the cost of leveling Ancients by up to -99.95%. It should be leveled according to the above formula, and when you cannot afford more Borb levels, Chor'goloth is often the next best Outsider to level. Chor'goloth's effect is not highly effective at lower AS values, but it is generally more useful than other Outsiders.

Ponyboy increases the amount of hero souls gained with the equation [level^2x10]. He is useful for the first few transcendences, but is outshadowed quickly by the increasing AS cost and the reduction of efficiency at higher levels.

Borb is amazing. While at first glance, it may seem that reducing monsters per zone(mpz) is not that important, it is. Most of the other outsiders provide upgrades that directly or indirectly affect your DPS, as well as many of the ancients. Borb is the exception. Because the role of boosting DPS can be substituted by high ancient levels, but there is no way to subsitute mpz, Borb is the most important Outsider.

Another reason why Borb is effective is a bug in instakill speed. When a monster is killed faster than the game can tick, it is called "instakill". During instakill, instead of the first monster going through all of it's death frames, it is only one frame. This is why maintaining 2mpz is so important. Borb can reduce the time spent on a zone by up to 8x(at 2mpz), making him the best Outsider by far.

Rhageist can multiply your souls by up to 20×. In the mid game, he is great for increasing the chances of primal bosses and thus HS gain. However, int he late game, his affect cannot keep up with the quickly decreasing primal chance, and becomes fairly useless.

Orphalas is not used by many high-level players. Orphalas suffers from the same fate as Rhageist, but it's even more useless. Chronos caps at +30 seconds of Boss Timer, and every 500 zones, Boss Timer goes down by 2. This results in a quick decrease of Boss Timer that isn't worth increasing. Early game, you will not have the AS to level him, and late game, your HZE will be too high for Chronos or Orphalas to be useful.

K'Ariqua is not useful in general. Bubos's scaling is very abysmal, and his effect is not worth it in general, as he only can decrease boss health by 50%. Every 500 zones, boss health increases by 0.4x, making Bubos, and thus K'Ariqua, useless in the entire game.

Sen-Akhan is the most useful of the Super-Outsiders, excluding Borb. Dora's effect is fairly strong, and has a high level cap. Sen-Akhan's effect is also very strong, multiplying Dora's effect every time it is leveled. Dora and Sen-Akhan are very useful early game and mid-game, but due to the exponentially decreasing Treasure Chest Chance, they are not useful in late game.

When to Ascend

The rule of thumb for the entire game is to ascend when you have passed zone 130 and are consistently failing bosses. There is no other optimal time.

Choosing Ancients

Before Transcending, you want these Ancients:

   - Siyalatas, Ancient of Abandon

   - Libertas, Ancient of Freedom

   - Mammon, Ancient of Greed

   - Mimzee, Ancient of Riches

Gold

By now, you should know that the main currency of the game is gold, the currency used to hire and level heroes. Gold is gained normally from Monsters, and the value is increased for a Boss level. Gold gain can be increased with Mammon, Ancient of Greed.

Sometimes, a Treasure Chest will spawn giving x10 the gold of a normal monster on that zone. This multiplier can be increased with the Ancient Mimzee, Ancient of Riches.

Clickables, primarily the orange fish clickable, will grant Rubies and Gold.

Extra gold can be earned from the Skills Metal Detector and Golden Clicks, that latter of which can be affected by Pluto, Ancient of Wealth, and will become your primary source of gold later on in the game.

Idle Mode

Idle mode occurs when you afk for 60 seconds (or 1 minute) and it's not really effective in early game and late game as this will misbehave the game mechanics, which is clicking.

During early-mid game, idle mode seems to have effective. To gain more idle DPS, upgrade ancient Nogardnit and Siyalatas while for gold, upgrade Libertas. To increase total idle boost, upgrade outsider Xyliqil.

After 18K zone, mid-late game, you should respec on Xyliqil and start using Active mode for the rest of the game.

Active Mode

Active mode occurs anytime and stops when afk for 60 seconds (or 1 minute) and it's mostly used in the entire game.

Buying Heroes and Upgrades

Every hero has a certain starting cost and starting DPS, which can be increased by Upgrades. These upgrades can boost their own DPS, global DPS, gold gain, or unlock skills. Normal heroes(with the exception of the Ace Scouts) have a cost multiplier of [startingCost]x1.07^level. (The Ace Scouts have a cost multiplier of [startingCost]x1.22^level.

Past level 200, every hero has a self-DPS multiplier. For most heroes, this is a 4x multiplier ever 25 levels, with a 10x multiplier on levels 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, and 8000. (For Ace Scouts the multiplier is 1000x.)
