Main UI Overview

Understanding the game’s UI is key to navigating Darkest AFK – IDLE RPG story effectively. The main screen outside of battle has several tabs at the bottom, each giving you access to different aspects of the game. Here’s a breakdown of each, from left to right:

City Screen: This is where you’ll find facilities for shops, gachas, crafting, and other resource-related activities. You can use materials to craft gear, recruit heroes, or search for powerful artifacts. The City Screen is essentially the hub for managing your resources and upgrading your team.

Map Screen: Similar to the City, but focused on combat-related challenges. This is where you’ll find most game modes and features that involve battles. Completing these challenges rewards you with valuable resources to enhance your progress.

Campaign Screen: The Campaign is the main story mode of Darkest AFK – IDLE RPG story. It consists of chapters, each with several levels that get progressively harder. Completing these stages not only advances the storyline but also grants rewards and unlocks new features as you progress.

Heroes Screen: This is where you manage your roster of heroes. You can upgrade, equip, and customize your heroes from this screen, ensuring they’re ready for battle.

Inventory Screen: All of your items and valuables are stored here. You can manage and use some items directly from this screen.

Combat System

Combat in Darkest AFK – IDLE RPG story is primarily automated, making it accessible for both casual and more involved players. Your heroes will automatically move and attack enemies with basic attacks. However, as they fight, they build up energy in their ultimate meters. When the meters are full, you can manually activate their ultimate skills by clicking on the corresponding buttons.

Strategic use of these ultimates can turn the tide of battle, especially in tougher stages. Timing and prioritizing the right abilities at crucial moments will make a huge difference in how well you perform, particularly as you progress to harder levels.

Recruiting New Heroes

Recruiting heroes is an essential part of expanding your roster and strengthening your team. You can summon new heroes at the Recruitment Point in the City Screen. You can pay either Gems or Scrolls to summon heroes, with a single summon costing 200 Gems, and a 10x summon costing 1,800 Gems, essentially giving you a free pull. Currently, there doesn’t appear to be any banners, so all pulls seem to come from a shared pool of heroes.

As you summon heroes, you’ll also fill up a progress bar in the Recruitment Point. Once full, you’ll receive extra rewards, giving you additional resources for your efforts. This small bonus offers incentives to summon heroes, though players shouldn’t go out of their way and burn resources for these prizes—they’re just the cherry on the cake. 

Upgrading Heroes

Once you have a good roster of heroes, upgrading them becomes your next priority. You’ll be doing this frequently, so it’s important to understand how it works. The upgrade process in Darkest AFK – IDLE RPG story is quite similar to other idle RPGs like AFK Arena. Here are the main ways to upgrade your heroes:

Leveling Up: This is the most common method, requiring Gold and Hero EXP. The cost increases as the unit reaches higher levels.

Promoting Heroes: After reaching certain levels, you’ll need to use Hero Medals to continue leveling up. This milestone often unlocks new skills for your heroes.

Gearing: Equipping your heroes with better gear significantly boosts their stats. You can find gear from completing stages and challenges or through the game’s AFK farm mechanic.

Make sure to keep your strongest heroes well-geared and consistently level them up to stay competitive in tougher stages.

Quests and Achievements

Daily tasks and long-term achievements play a huge role in helping you gather resources. You can find all of these through the Quests button on the top right of the campaign screen. The quest menu offers three main types of tasks:

Dailies: These are quick tasks that refresh every day and offer moderate resources. Make sure to complete these as part of your daily routine in this game, as they give a steady supply of useful materials for your troubles.

Campaign Quests: These are long-term objectives that you’ll complete over time. They offer better rewards than dailies, but each can only be claimed once.

Royal Pass: This is the game’s battle pass system, where you can earn rewards as you climb through tiers. The game offers a free pass with nice rewards, and a paid version with even more rewards per tier.

Completing these tasks regularly is key to maximizing your resource gain and keeping your team strong.
