Introducing Das Örtliche
The Das Örtliche app, developed by the prominent phone directory provider in Germany, ensures that you always have access to contacts, addresses, and business hours for establishments in your vicinity or anywhere throughout Germany with just a tap of your finger.
Besides providing comprehensive business information, the Android version of Das Örtliche app also serves as a shield against unwanted calls such as telemarketing or phone scams. In case of an incoming call from an unfamiliar number, the app not only alerts you about potential spam calls but also cross-references the number with its extensive database to reveal the caller's identity. This proactive approach not only informs and safeguards you but also instills a sense of security when picking up the call.
Did you ever face the frustration of being unable to contact a restaurant or salon? Das Örtliche eliminates this hassle by utilizing its intelligent callID feature to suggest alternative businesses or locations.
Customizing the callID features according to your preferences is effortless, putting you in complete control of tailoring the app to cater to your specific needs efficiently.
FAQ
In our FAQ you will find all information about current scams and how you can protect yourself against them.
What is telephone fraud?
The term telephone fraud covers a wide range of scams that are carried out over the telephone. Older people and senior citizens are often particularly affected, as for many of them the telephone is their most important connection to the outside world. In addition, the "healthy distrust" of strangers or offers weakens with age. Coupled with the loneliness of many senior citizens, this plays into the hands of fraudsters and makes older people ideal victims.
How do I recognize telephone scams?
- Officials (e.g. police officers, notaries, public prosecutors) never call you.
- Bank employees never ask you for personal information such as financial status, account details or credit card numbers.
- Be suspicious if you are asked to hand over money to an unknown person.
- If you have supposedly won "something". Be aware: If you have not taken part in a competition, you cannot have won anything.
- When bills or fines are announced or reminded over the phone.
- Be suspicious if an unknown person calls you and does not reveal their name when asked.
- If the caller tries to pressure you.
When common sense tells you that something is wrong.
What telephone scams are there?
“False promises of profit”
The promise of supposedly high winnings is a popular scam that is used in a wide variety of ways. The method is always the same: before the winnings are handed over, the victims are asked by prize agents, lawyers or notaries to provide something in return. To do this, the victims are asked to pay "fees" or call premium rate numbers.
“Fake police officers”
In this scam, the fraudsters pretend to be police officers on the phone in order to get their victims to hand over money and valuables in their home or at the bank to an unknown person who is also pretending to be a police officer. The fraudsters claim, for example, that the money and valuables are no longer safe at their victims' homes or at the bank or that they need to be checked for traces. Be careful: To create credibility, the fraudsters use a special technique that causes the police emergency number 110 or another local telephone number to appear on the recipient's phone display when they call.
“False relatives (grandparent scam)” [Update]
In the so-called "grandchild trick", the fraudsters usually call older people who live alone and say "Guess who's speaking here" or similar phrases and pretend to be relatives, grandchildren or good friends. The fraudsters pretend to be in financial difficulty or in an emergency and ask for cash at short notice. The situation is always presented as extremely urgent. The fraudsters also put their victims under pressure by repeatedly calling them. As soon as the victim is ready to pay money, the fraudsters announce a messenger who will come to collect the money.
ATTENTION: In view of the Corona crisis, telephone fraudsters have adapted the "grandchild trick" to current events. The fraudsters pretend to be relatives, grandchildren or good friends who have been infected with the virus and now urgently need money for treatment. As soon as you are ready to pay the money, the fraudsters announce a messenger who will come to collect the money. Please remain suspicious even in this tense crisis situation surrounding the coronavirus.
“Yes trap”
In the so-called "yes trap", the fraudsters try to elicit a "yes" as an answer through their call. They try to get this "yes" with simple questions such as "Can you hear me well?" or "Can you understand me?". This "yes" is then filtered out by the fraudsters and played into another recording, so that it appears that the person called has agreed to a purchase contract or subscription over the phone, for example.
