What are the basic rules for playing Mexican Train Dominoes, and how do you win?

The gist for the impatient:

1. Dish out all 91 dominoes—or however many your set has—evenly to all players, upside down. Keep them hidden from your opponents.

2. Your objective is to remove all your tiles from your tray or pile first. The first player to run out of dominoes wins.

3. The player with the first double twelve tile is the public train engine and goes first. If no one has it, everyone draws a tile from the public bone pile or boneyard until they draw it.

4. Clockwise, each player lays a starter engine that has 12 pips on one side. This is the start from your train station. If you don't have one, you can draw for one.

5. For each consecutive turn, lay a tile that connects to the last domino in their line (the train) or the public train. Be strategic about your personal trains and the tile played!

6. A player who plays a double gets to go again and must "cover the double". So a tile that has two pips on either side must connect to another tile with 2 pips on its left side. You can string together multiple doubles, too.

7. If a player can't close a double, they draw from the bone pile or public pile and passes to the next player.

8. Every player must make a move or draw at least one tile per turn. You can play on your train or the public train at any time. You can play on another player's train only when they're "open".

9. A player's train is "open" when they can't make a move, and they're out of tiles they can't match to their own train. This is an opportunity for other people to play on your train—which can be helpful or harmful depending on the tile they lay.

10. The game ends with the first person is out of tiles. The remaining players count up the number of pips (dots) on all their tiles, and that's their score. The player with the lowest score wins after three rounds.

What's a double?

A double is any tile that is the same on both sides such as 3|3 or 9|9, like these:

Playing doubles is the best way to make multiple consecutive turns, force other players to make moves, reduce your score, and win.

It’s rare, but you can end a game of Mexican Train with a double, too.

What's the best strategy to win in Mexican Train Dominoes?

When you play Mexican Train Dominoes with other people, it's a little more sociable and has a less competitive edge than many other games. But it can turn competitive fast if you develop a strategy with your tiles.

- First, organize your hand. Our Android and iOS apps allow you to arrange tiles in your pile just like you can with physical pieces. Like most things in life, getting organized helps. Put your tiles in an order that lets you chain together your own pieces.

- As you come across dominoes that don't connect to any other end of your own, set those spares aside. Those are the tiles you want to chuck onto other player's trains or the public train.

- Among the tiles you don't have much use for yourself, keep an eye on when you can unload those onto the public train or another player's train to get them out of your pile.

- Keep other players "stuck" for as long as possible. Lay your doubles down so you can go again and deny them a turn. And if no one is playing on their train or not playing on the public train, you know they don't have any tiles that work. So long as you have moves playable on your train, stick to it so others can't lay tiles.

How can I reduce my score if I'm not going to win?

If you have too many tiles and a competitor seems to have a clear path to victory, you should reduce your score. While the winning player will get a "0", which is the best you can hope for, identify your tiles with the highest pip (dots) count and play those first.

If you have a tile that adds up to 4 and another adds up to 10 or 12, unload the 10s and 12s first. String together doubles if you have them to unload more tiles faster by chaining moves.

This way if another player is out of tiles first, your score can be 4 and not 12, reducing your overall score. Mexican Train Dominoes is like golf: the lower your score, the better. The lowest number of pips after three rounds wins.

When does a train become blocked?

A train is blocked when no more tiles exist in any of the player's piles or the boneyard that can possibly connect to it. Trains are usually blocked close to the end of each game when available tiles are low.

It can be hard to know this when playing with physical tiles. The iOS and Android Mexican Train Dominoes games detect it automatically.

Should I play on another person's train when they're blocked or leave them there?

If you’re stuck with a tile you just need to unload and it won't go anywhere else among your train or the public train late in the game, lay it on someone's train. But as a rule, stick to your own train for as long as possible to leave them "stuck".

Given a choice to play a tile on multiple competitor's trains, always play on whoever has the most dominoes left. This way you don't risk someone getting unstuck from your tile and running out of tiles before you.

You can be extra mean to competitors by laying a tile with the same caboose end you already know they can't cover. If their train is open on a |4, lay another tile that ends in |4. Just be prepared to hide under the table if playing with friends or family!

When should I play on the public Mexican Train?

The public train is the most common and useful place to unload your spare tiles.

Some players like to play all their spares first, then play on their train. Others claim the best way to go is to focus on their train and then unload spares.

Which you prefer is up to you, but we generally encourage people to unload all the spares early and as quickly as possible on the public train.

When should I not play on my personal train?

If you have an open train (sometimes marked by a penny in physical sets and marked as "open" in our apps), leave your train open if you have nothing to play. The number of dominoes in your train makes no difference to your score at the end of the game, so don't worry if your train is longer or shorter than others.

But if someone else lays a tile that opens you up to lay a tile on your train, play it.

Should I play a double I can't clear?

Playing a double you can’t cover is a risky move but it can work itself out. Sometimes you may have a double and have to play it because you're almost out of tiles or just have no choice. This is common near the end of the game as people increasingly draw from the boneyard.

You can deploy a double you can't cover to force other players to cover it. If you know from the tiles on the board that most of the playable tiles are already used, this can force other players to open their trains and draw more tiles.

Can I play Mexican Train if I don't have a double-twelve dominoes set?

Yes, you can play with a double-6 set (the most common among most of our childhood box sets) and a double-15. Double-18 sets can be used but are best for large groups of more than a dozen.

How can I close my train, and should I?

Your train is best suited for your dominoes. Early on, you almost certainly want to close your train as quickly as possible. But if you're just stuck, or it's late in the game, you may have no choice.

To close your train and prevent others from playing tiles on it, you need to lay a tile on your own caboose. Playing on a public train domino or some other player's doesn't enable you or anyone else to close a train with the remaining dominoes. You can only close it by playing your own tile on your own train.

Can you play Mexican Train Dominoes with two players?

You can, but you probably want to start with a smaller set. The full, traditional set includes 91 dominoes which could take a long time for two people to play, and you risk getting stuck in draws. A minimum of three people is best. Four or more is ideal.

What are some popular house rule variations of Mexican Train?

Depending on the number of players and whether you have a physical domino set, some players find these other house rules and variations interesting:

In the first round, everyone plays all their possible moves simultaneously. This strings out the trains and subsequently reduces the power of laying doubles early on. After everyone's made all possible first moves, regular play resumes as one-tile-at-a-time.

You can opt to remove the "cover the double" rule, thus negating the ability for players to force others to move or take multiple turns.

You can play as a team. So four players could play two-vs-two where the win is decided when both partners are out of tiles.

Use blank domino tiles as "wilds" that can be used as anything the player chooses.

Go wild and add more public trains. If you have up to nine or twelve players, you can add up to two or three more public trains.

You can play Chickenfoot Dominoes by laying tiles on either side of a train.
