Learning a Language

Duolingo

Click Home to access your road map. The road map is where you'll do the majority of your learning. It's split into different units, and each unit contains multiple lessons. As you progress through the language, more units will be available to you (you'll be able to unlock them).

There are multiple levels per unit (specified by "Lesson X of Y"). Once you click on each lesson, you'll see what percentage of the way you are to the next level. You can level up either by finishing all of the required lessons in your level or taking the test.

The old skill tree was replaced in August of 2022; however, Duolingo remembers what skills you learned and uses that to adapt the lessons in the future parts of the road map.

Duolingo

Test out of what you already know (optional). If you already have a basic grasp of the language, you can advance ahead with a test. Select "Jump Here" next to the unit that you want to unlock.

Since this is a test of your knowledge, you must make less than four mistakes in order to pass. That means, if you lose all three hearts, you'll still have one more chance, but if you make one more mistake after that, you won't test out. You can try again as many times as you'd like, though. If you test out, you'll be able to level up!

If you are a beginner to your language or do not know the content in your skill very well, it is highly advisable that you start with the lessons until you know the content well. In order to gain a greater comprehension of the language, take screenshots of the lesson content, and write and/or speak using the words and/or sentences in Duolingo.

Duolingo

Click on the first lesson underneath the road map. Within each unit, there are multiple lessons. Click the first one to get started. Unlike the tests, there is no limit on the number of questions you can get wrong, though you must get all of them correct in order to pass. Here are the different types of questions within a lesson:

Vocabulary: You'll see a picture of the item and be asked to name it in either your native or target language.

Translation: You'll be asked to translate a word or sentence out of English and into the other language, or vice versa.

Listening: You'll hear an audio clip of a word or sentence and be asked to type it in. You'll see "Type what you hear" above it. (Note that you won't be translating for these questions — for instance, if you hear the sentence in Spanish, type it in Spanish, not English.) To play the clip more slowly, click the smaller turtle icon beneath the main speaker button. Clicking "Can't listen now" will turn these off for fifteen minutes.

Speaking (optional): You'll be asked to repeat or translate sentences using the microphone on your computer or mobile device. This is only available in select languages.

-If you don't want to do the speaking questions, click the gear in the upper right corner, choose Settings, and switch the microphone option to off.

Handwriting: You'll be asked to write down a specific character on screen. Initially there may be guides when you first learn, but eventually you will have to remember the specific stroke order. This is only available in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese (Hiragana/Katakana, no Kanji), Korean (Hangul, no Hanja), Russian, Ukranian, Yiddish, and Hindi, however there are plans to expand this feature further to other languages with non-Latin scripts.[2] This is only done when using the "Learn the Characters" menu in Duolingo.

Learning foreign language vocabulary through this app is a great way to quickly build up your word bank. It's structured by subject, so you'll learn relevant words. While it won't make you fluent alone, it's beneficial alongside other methods like classroom learning. Beginners will especially gain confidence using this app. Highly recommended!

I'm a huge fan of Duolingo! It's been a week, and I've already learned a lot thanks to it. The lessons are enjoyable, so it doesn't feel like a tedious task. It's designed like a game, which motivates me to complete my lessons, keep a good streak, and look forward to daily learning. The lessons are short, taking no more than 10 minutes unless you're slower. It's really effective. I recommend it wholeheartedly! 👌

This language learning program keeps me engaged without feeling discouraged like I did with other programs. It subtly repeats the lessons to help solidify what I've learned. I'm happy to see improvement even with just a short regular practice. I wish there was an option for a comprehensive review of all completed lessons or to choose specific lessons to focus on. While the brief lesson reviews are helpful, longer ones would be more beneficial.

You know, I'm still not a fan of the learning paths. It's kinda frustrating not being able to choose my lessons, and without the pictures, it's hard to go back to previous topics. But hey, overall, the app is improving. I really enjoy the new way they teach kanji. Instead of just drawing the same lines over and over, now you have to understand and recognize it in various situations.

This learning app is really cool. The YouTube channel is entertaining too. I like how easy it is to learn different languages. You can delay the speaking and listening exercises for later without losing progress. Hope you have a good day or night! Oh, about the app icon change - can you switch it back to how it was before? The new one with the melted face looks creepy.

You should be familiar with American English. They don't like Football, only soccer. I don't like having to click to go to the next page and then the audio starts immediately. I'd rather click to start it. Overall, the site is really well organized and is a great learning resource. It can be completely free, which is awesome. I decided to pay for "super duo". If you're able to, it's definitely worth it. Enjoy learning!

There are so many ads now, it's affecting my experience. Before, there were only a few, but now it's one after the other. The glitches don't help either. I often find lessons running in the background while ads pop up. Once, I got a Chinese ad on Facebook and had to figure out how to close it. And apparently, free users can't use the speaking feature anymore – the option's disappeared!

The app was great to use, but sometimes they make big changes to your course. They put new words and phrases into units you've already finished, claiming that you've learned them when you haven't. It's annoying and takes away your motivation. Even though they show pictures of it, I never had a speaking lesson.

I think Duolingo is such a cool app. I was learning Spanish for a while, then took a break. But then I noticed I could understand simple Spanish sentences easily. That motivated me to go back to the app and keep learning. The app is designed to help you learn the language naturally. It's tough but covers everything like speaking, reading, and writing. The challenges and rewards make it exciting!
