What is the meaning of Fddb and which features does the app offer?
Fddb stands for the English word fooddatabase.
The Fddb app is a mobile calorie counter and offers you the option of keeping a food diary in order to monitor your eating habits. Thanks to a wide range of functions, such as
the diet report,
creating your own recipes / lists and
a weekly report,
a recipe area with lots of delicious and healthy recipes to cook at home
the app offers a wide range of assistance in order to achieve your target weight and to get an overview of the nutrients you have absorbed. The app focuses on presenting facts: You can see figures, charts and statistics without receiving advice on specific nutrition, diets or sports activities.
The Fddb app is part of our online portal and synchronizes your diary data in real time so that you can keep your food diary on your smartphone/tablet as well as on your computer at the same time. You can download the app as a free version for Android and iOS devices and, if required, purchase a premium membership via an in-app purchase. The premium membership is valid across all devices.
Can I use Fddb on several devices in parallel?
Yes, that works. You can keep your food diary in parallel with the Fddb apps for iOS devices, Android devices and on the computer via the Fddb website. All your entries are synchronized with each other in real time between the devices. In order for all of this to work, you have to be logged in with the same Fddb account on all devices.
The Fddb app is not only available for smartphones, but also for Android tablets and the iPad.
If you are a premium user, Fddb Premium is automatically available on all your devices.
Please note that the same functions and data may not be available on all systems.
On what basis does Fddb recommend a certain nutrient intake?
You would like to know what amounts of proteins, carbohydrates or fats you should optimally consume in your diet? Or how much magnesium or vitamin C is good for you? Fddb can help you get a feel for what amounts of macro- and micronutrients are appropriate for you. There are so-called reference values for certain types of nutrients that are recommended for different groups of people. For example, pregnant women or older people have different needs for certain nutrients.
In the Fddb app, you can have your intake of macro- and micronutrients determined automatically. The app will refer to the reference values for nutrient intake of the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung - DGE) and your profile data (age, gender, height and weight). The premium membership is required for this.
To do so, go to "Nutrient planner" in the menu and then click on the calculator symbol in the upper right corner. Based on your personal data and the recommendations of the DGE, the app calculates your recommended personal daily doses.
Please note:
For some macronutrients (saturated fatty acids, sugar, fiber and cholesterol) and the mineral sulfur the German Nutrition Society and thus also the Fddb app do not provide any basic recommendations, as very individual values apply to these values. This is why the values for the target daily dose for these nutrients in the app are set to 0 by default. As a premium user, you can define the values yourself.
Please also note that the German Nutrition Society will adjust its recommendations over time and that the calculations in the Fddb app may be based on outdated data. In this regard, please also note our notes on health topics.
What should I watch out for when taking good product photos?
Would you like to support Fddb and upload some product photos to Fddb? We say thank you very much for your commitment!
Tips for a successful and nice product photo:
Place the food alone and make sure there is adequate lighting.
Place the food on a surface that contrasts with the product in color (e.g. dark chocolate = light background; white chocolate = dark background).
Please do not hold the product in your hand while taking pictures.
The front of the product should be shown in the photo.
Please do not photograph or upload any empty product packaging.
For yoghurt, quark, etc., they can also be taken from above (lid).
For formatting reasons, only landscape format is suitable.
Focus the camera and avoid shaky photos.
In order not to distract from the product, please refrain from image processing and filters.
Please do not only photograph the labels of the product, but the entire product.
Can I use Fddb in English?
Yes, it is possible. On the one hand you can use the app in English and on the other hand you can decide whether you want to use the German or the English food database. You can use both in English or just the database or just the app.
On the Fddb website you automatically use the English database with the language setting "English".
--> Please note: Both databases may contain different products. The English database still contains far fewer products than the German database.
Settings for Android users:
Go to "Account" in the bottom menu on the far right and to the settings wheel on the top right.
Then scroll to the menu item "Interface". Here you can choose between German and English for both the app language and the database language.
Settings for iOS users:
App language: You can only use the Fddb app in English if you have selected "English" in the phone settings of your device. Then you will automatically use the app in English.
Database language: In the app, go to "More" in the bottom right menu, then to "Settings", then to "Database": German/English.
Website User Settings:
On the Fddb website, go to "Language" at the very top right.
Then select "English".
Features
Dashboard
What do I see on the dashboard?
By default, the dashboard is the first view after starting the Fddb app.
On the dashboard you can see at a glance whether you have achieved
your daily requirements and
your macronutrient goals (if you are a premium member).
Your personal daily requirement from your profile and the calories you have consumed so far from your diary are offset against each other. Activities that were either added manually or imported via external trackers and apps can also be included in the calculation. You can see directly on the dashboard where you are with your diet and whether you have eaten enough, too much, the right or the wrong.
Via the dashboard you can also access
the water tracker
the daily report or
the weekly report.
How can I change my calorie limit?
Fddb calculates your daily calorie limit based on your personal data (age, gender, height and weight). For this purpose, the value is calculated using the so-called Harris-Benedict formula.
If you would like to enter an individual value for your daily calorie limit, please proceed as follows:
Android users:
1 Go to "Account" in the bottom menu.
2 Go to the settings wheel in the top right.
3 Go to the "My Account" section.
4 Go to "Calorie limit".
5 Enter your own desired value and press save.
6 If you want our app to recalculate the value automatically, please select the second point with the suggested value and don't forget to press "Save".
iOS users:
1 Go to "More" in the bottom menu.
2 Go to "My Account".
3 Go to "Calorie limit".
4 Enter your own desired value and press the check mark to save.
5 If you want our app to recalculate the value automatically, please tap on "Calculate automatically" at the blue bar first and afterwards on the tick to save your changes.
Website users:
1 Go to the "My Fddb" tab.
2 Go to the "Settings" tab.
3 Go to "Required" and click "Edit".
4 Enter your own desired value and press save.
5 If you want Fddb to recalculate the value for your daily calorie limit automatically, please click on "Automatically" and on Save.
What do I see when I go to "Details" under "Your day" in the dashboard?
On this screen you can see the details of three different components in three tabs:
Your calories ingested
Your macronutrients (macros) ingested
Your micronutrients (micros) ingested
Tab "Calories"
Depending on the personal setting, the calories that have already been taken in are shown here either for each time of day (morning, noon, evening) or for each individual meal.
Below the diagram there is a descending listing of the highest calorie foods of the day.
Tabs "Macros" and "Micros"
Here you can see the amount of macronutrients and micronutrients already supplied for the current day. If you use the nutrient planner (a function of the premium membership), you will see the progress of your daily goal achieved in% for the macronutrients on the far right.
With regard to micronutrients, all app users (even without a premium membership) can see on the far right whether they have already achieved their daily goals. This advertisement is based on the recommendations of the DGE (German Society for Nutrition). In both tabs, you can sort the food you have eaten according to certain nutrients in the lower area, e.g. the products with the highest fat content or the most vitamin C.
Food diary
I want to add a new purchased product in the database, what should I pay attention to?
Before creating a new product, please check carefully if it is already in the database. If you use the barcode scanner and no result appears, please also use the text search. If you don't find the product, feel free to create a new database entry. If you find the product, but with outdated, incomplete or wrong nutritional values, you are welcome to correct the product.
To ensure that the quality of the new entry is good and that other users can find it using text search, we have put together some tips for you:
Product name:
- Complete and as stated on the package
- without typos, case sensitive
- without producer or brand names
- without abbreviations
- without calorie information
- without other personal markings
- for products in foreign languages please indicate the original product name
Addition/option:
- e.g. for flavor or further details (e.g. for yogurt, protein powder)
- e.g. for (un)prepared state (e.g. for noodles, protein powder):
--> Unprepared: Note "dry product"
--> Prepared: Note "prepared with water/cream/milk 3.5%" or similar.
- without other personal labels ("delicious") or product groups ("cheese")
- without brackets
- without abbreviations
- e.g. for translation of foreign language product name
Producer:
- optimally indicate the brand name on the packaging (e.g. "Gut & Günstig" or "Milbona")
- alternatively indicate the company name with legal form ("ABC GmbH")
Other:
- If available, include barcode (by means of scanner or manual input).
- Transfer all indicated nutritional values for 100g of the product
- For vitamins and minerals, note the unit of measurement (grams, milligrams or micrograms)
How can I add entries to the food diary?
You can add entries either using the plus symbol or directly in the diary view. Please proceed as follows:
Search and find the appropriate product from the Fddb database; either via search, the barcode scanner or via your favorites.
Go to the product page and specify the following two things: the desired amount / portion and the time at which you ate the food.
You can then save your details and the entry will appear in your diary.
How can I edit and delete wrong diary entries?
Please note: To edit and delete diary entries, you must be directly in the diary. You can not edit anything in the day details, which you can access via the dashboard, and in the weekly report.
If you want to change the amount or the time of an already added diary entry, you can do this as follows without having to add the entry again:
Go to your diary and click on the product for which you want to change the amount or time.
Change the information by entering a new value.
Click on "Save".
If you want to delete a product entry from your diary, proceed as follows:
Go to the entry in your diary in the app that you want to delete.
Swipe the name from right to left.
A submenu opens. Press there on "Delete" (iOS) or the trash can symbol (Android). Finished!
To move, copy or delete several products at the same time, you can also press the pencil symbol in the top left (iOS) or top right (Android) in the diary.
The information about a product seems to be incorrect, how can I correct it?
If you notice that calories, nutritional values or other information are incorrect in a product or food item, you can report this error. To do this, proceed as follows:
If you are using iOS, go to the product detail page of the relevant food and press the pencil icon in the upper right corner. In the next step you can update the previous information. Finally, press the tick in the top right to submit your details.
If you use Android, please also go to the product detail page and click on the link "Correct product data". A form opens in which you can make your corrections or additions. Finally, confirm your entries by pressing "Save".
If you use our website, click the "Correct data" link on the product page. Then fill out the following form with the correct data and press "Send message" at the end.
A member of our team will check your corrections and, if necessary, update them.
How can I create a new product if it is missing in the database?
First, please check very carefully whether the product you are missing is not already registered in the Fddb database. Try it with or without an EAN code, hyphenation or combination, manufacturer name or related terms.
Our experience shows that you can often find the products you want in this way and save yourself having to re-enter the product. If you miss a product or a food, feel free to add it. To do this, proceed as follows:
If you use iOS, go to the search via the diary and press the plus symbol in the upper right corner. In the next step, a form opens in which you can enter all the information about the missing product. Finally, press the arrow at the top right to send your details and save the new product.
If you use Android, please also go to the search and press the plus symbol in the upper right corner. Fill out the form that opens with all the product information you have. Finally, confirm your entries by pressing "Save".
If you use our website, go to the "Calorie table" area and click on the "Create new product" link in the navigation. Then fill out the following form with the information you have about the product and press "Save" at the end.
Here we have compiled some tips for creating new products in the database for you.
I like to plan my meals in advance (meal prep), can I enter them in my diary for a future time?
That's fine. To do this, simply go to the corresponding week or day in your diary using the calendar function at the top. The app calculates your expected calories and nutrients in advance.
