6 Tips for Using Flashcards in Language Learning

1. Add Context to Enhance Understanding

Instead of just memorizing single words, use sentences that incorporate the new vocabulary to see how these words function in real situations.

For example, if you’re learning family-related terms in Portuguese, rather than just noting down “pai” (father), you could write: “Meu pai trabalha no centro da cidade.” This way, you’re also practicing the verb “trabalhar” in context.

I’ve created a set of flashcards with key family vocabulary. You’ll find a link to the flashcards in my blog post about family vocabulary in Portuguese.

While these flashcards focus on single words, you can enhance them by using your own flashcard tool to create sentences that provide context. This approach helps you remember how to use the words naturally in conversation.

2. Visualize Your Learning with Images

Visual aids can significantly enhance your memory retention. Associating a picture with a word can make it easier to recall.

For instance, I’ve created a set of flashcards featuring vocabulary about vegetables, herbs, grains, nuts, and legumes. Each flashcard includes a picture along with the word in Portuguese, helping you visualize and memorize the terms more effectively.

3. Leverage Spaced Repetition Software for Consistency

Spaced repetition is a learning technique where you review information at increasing intervals over time. So, you spread it out, reviewing the material after a day, then a few days later, then a week, and so on.

The main advantage of spaced repetition is that it helps you retain information more effectively. By revisiting the material at intervals, you reinforce your memory just as it’s starting to fade, which strengthens your recall in the long term. This method leverages the brain’s natural forgetting curve, making it a powerful tool for learning and retaining new information.

Consistency is key in language learning, and many flashcard tools, like Anki or Quizlet, offer a spaced repetition feature. This tool automatically schedules reviews at optimal intervals, helping you retain what you’ve learned more effectively over time.

4. Incorporate Retrieval Practice into Your Daily Flashcard Routine

Set aside a few minutes each day to review your flashcards, incorporating the powerful technique of retrieval practice.

Retrieval practice involves actively recalling information from memory, rather than just re-reading or passively reviewing your notes.

When you challenge yourself to remember what you’ve learned—whether through flashcards, quizzes, or simply writing down what you remember without looking at your materials—you strengthen the connections in your memory.

This habit of actively pulling information from your brain not only reinforces what you’ve learned but also makes it easier to recall the information in the future, leading to more effective long-term retention.

5. Speak Your Way to Fluency

When you review your flashcards, say the words and sentences out loud. This practice not only helps with pronunciation but also improves your auditory memory. The more you speak the words, the more natural they will feel in conversation.

6. Apply Your New Words in Real Conversations

The best way to cement new vocabulary in your mind is by using it in real conversations.

Try to incorporate your new words when talking to friends or family. Often, words are used differently in Portuguese and English, even if they mean the same thing. Using your new vocabulary in various contexts helps with long-term retention and teaches you the nuances of the language.

For instance, when I learn a new word in English, I test myself by using it in a sentence and asking my husband, “Can I use this word here? Is this how you use this word?” This approach allows me to practice in a safe environment.

I found a really good language word app with a variety of learning games to cater to different learners. The word sets already have the gender (m, f, n) but unfortunately, they don't include the article (der, die, das) with the word nor show the plural form, which is a bummer. However, the app works well with spreadsheets so I've been able to customize it myself with endless possibilities. It's an excellent app overall!

Isn't it great?! But I'm facing an issue with synonyms in the "Guess It" and "Pair It" modes. If there are two answers in the list that are the same, it makes a difference which one you select, unfortunately. Dealing with identical words causes problems in other modes as well, but this one seems the simplest to fix, especially because I've seen other apps do it too. Another suggestion I have is to include tags and the option to review cards based on tags, not just folders.

Wow, this app is amazing! You can choose to use one side with image-only mode. It runs smoothly and the sound comes on automatically. I wish there was automatic correction and translation suggestions like in Quizlet. Besides that, I have no other feedback. I am very happy with it.

Isn't this app just great? It's so helpful for learning new words! I've been using it every day for about seven months now, and I'm really impressed with it. The only downside is that it's only available on Android. I've tried to recommend it to my friends, but unfortunately, they all use Apple devices so they can't make use of Lexilize.

The app is hard to figure out. You get an alert for a new word but when you want to listen to how it's pronounced, the app shows you a list of other words instead. Then you have to search for the right word which takes up a lot of time and feels pointless. That's why I don't use the app.

The tool looks great and works well, but there are areas where it could be better. First, there's no web app available, so all your data is limited to your phone. Also, the image search feature only supports Yandex and offers just a few suggestions, missing Google image browsing. Plus, there's no cloud backup, meaning if you lose your phone, you'll lose all your flashcards. Lastly, there's no audio recorder feature. While Anki has more functions, Lexilise has a sleeker design.

I have been using this amazing app for about 8 months now and I absolutely adore it. There are several features that I truly love, such as the cloud backup, import function, ability to change voice and speed, game options to test my skills, and timed repetition reminders. I also appreciate the automatic pronunciation feature for the language I am learning as it saves me time and effort compared to other apps where I have to input the pronunciation manually. In my opinion, this is the greatest flashcard app ever! The only downside is that I wish there were versions available for Windows and Mac operating systems as well.
