How to get higher scores at FPS games:
Practice makes permanent, not perfect.
You have to actually correct your habits and consciously play well in order to improve. Just doing something over and over doesn't automatically make you good at it.
Think about the way you play. Do you have problems with aiming? Is it how you move your mouse? Is it your settings? Do you just panic and that causes you to miss? Do you just miss because you're bad? If no one is shooting you, can you hit them in 5 seconds? In 3 seconds? In 1 second? Less than 1 second?
How's your positioning/game sense? How often do you shoot someone in the back? How often do you get shot yourself? Is your route selection bad? Do you understand map layout? Do you understand fundamentals of map layout (cover, flank positions, corners, etc.)?
How are your mechanics? Do you run when you need to run? Crouch when you need to crouch? Do you reload when you have the opportunity? Do you over-reload and catch yourself in animation while in a fight? Could you swap weapons in mid fight if you needed to? Do you know when it's better to reload or switch to sidearm?
And so on and so forth. Without knowing you at all personally, but assuming you're a fairly typical late-teen/young adult, I would bet that you could see orders of magnitude in improvement if you just relaxed your attitude and focused on your own gameplay. A majority of cases in my personal experience of someone being bad around that age is just that they get frustrated and all reasoning just shuts down and they just continue to tilt and play like garbage and rage.
Getting better at a video game isn't like getting better at a sport. Practice, practice, practice works for most athletes because during practice they're getting a physical workout which will give them an advantage over their opponents even if they didn't learn anything during practice. You don't get any kind of physical workout or advantage from just practicing a video game. If you didn't learn something or improve some aspect of your play while practicing, then you might as well have been doing something else.
Many people just "zone out" while they're playing. They run on auto-pilot and do the same thing they've always done, even if that puts them at the bottom of the scoreboard again. You need to actively study the game's mechanics to find where you can get an advantage and actively make decisions during play that will put you in advantageous situations.
Your question is too vague to give you specific advice, but the best place to start is to pick 1 game and work out how to be better at it. You will have a difficult time if the game is not designed to give skillful players a major advantage with lots of random deaths (like PUBG) or if the game has far too much content for you to master with lots of players just screwing around (like TF2). I would recommend starting with a very basic skill based shooter. Quake Live is a good idea (it's free), Quake Champions is another (it's in paid early access), Dirty Bomb has a high skill ceiling and mastering aiming and positioning is 99% of what's important (but it has a low player count, which can make finding a match with similarly skilled player frustrating). I don't play CS:GO or Rainbox Six Seige, but they might also be good choices. You want a game where skilled players consistently win and you can easily find a game with similarly skilled players.
If you play a game with classes, pick 1 class and play it until you're at the top of the scoreboard consistently. Make sure the class has a high skill ceiling. I don't recommend starting with a sniper class in any game. The sniper skill set doesn't translate well to any other class and it typically has an extremely high learning curve.
While you're playing, actively try to employ techniques that will give you an advantage (this will vary quite a bit between games and even between classes).
For example, in most direct fire games, keeping your gun aimed at places where a threat could appear is very helpful. That means instead of walking around with your crosshairs pointed at the floor or kind of off into the sky or at a wall, point it at the doorway across the room where an enemy might come in. If someone does come in, your crosshairs are already on top of them. That also means keeping your crosshairs at head height in games where headshots do extra damage.
Another example: Think about where the enemy is, what locations will be risky, and what locations will be safe. If you know an enemy has good cover overlooking a courtyard, don't just run through the courtyard and hope that they miss. Think of a way to avoid that risk and gain the upper hand. That could mean taking a different route. That could mean lobbing a grenade at them. That could mean waiting for your team to flank him. The point is to be conscious of your position relative to the enemy and how that gives you or them an advantage.
After every single death ask yourself why you died and look for what you could have done differently to avoid it. After every game ask yourself why you got the score that you did, then look at what you did right and what you could do better. In the next life or game, incorporate those ideas. Don't respawn or start a new match until you've thought about what happened in the last.
Two things you didn't ask about that are hugely important for competitive FPS games:
First, look up guides and faqs for how to configure your mouse for that game and how to precisely aim. Don't listen to that guy that says "mouse sensitivity is entirely personal preference." He's right, but he's the worst kind of right: he's technically right. Statistically most people play better when their mouse is configured in a certain way because the aim speed is conducive to that game's mechanics. There's a reason most pro players are using similar mouse setups - because they found it easier to play like that. Sure, some guys have crazy high or crazy low sensitivity compared to everyone else and they make it work for them, but they're the exception (and the reason that guy is technically right). Don't assume you're the exception.
Use a large mousepad and use the entire mouse pad. That means something 40 cm or wider and while you're playing you use all of that space. You should be sweeping your mouse across most of the pad to make a 180 degree turn, not flicking the mouse an extra inch outside the 1 square inch that your usually use. This will probably feel painfully slow when you start using it, but if you give it a couple days you will get used to it and your aim will improve.
Watch some videos of how pro CS:GO players setup their mouse and use the mouse space while playing. Whether you like CS:GO as a game or not, it's popular enough that there are lots of videos showing you this kind of thing and the mouse techniques those guys have developed are both fast at aiming and very precise.
Second, I know you said you have great hardware, but make sure it's configured and performing well. Keep an fps monitor up and running and make sure your framerate never dips below 60 fps. Some people prefer much higher frame rates (I prefer 144 for games I play casually and CS:GO players want to have 300+ constantly), but I'm using 60 fps here as a bare minimum. Even the best players in the world will struggle to play well with a low framerate.
