What are Map Packs?

Map packs are a powerful and flexible way of managing map sources. You can save combinations of layers and opacities to make them easy to load on the map for specific activities.

Turn Map Packs on or off

If Map Packs are not enabled, you will see the Standard Map Menu. To enable map packs, tap Settings > Map Controls > toggle on Map Packs.

Gaia GPS

When you turn Map Packs on, your current combination of active layers is automatically turned into a map pack. The default name will look something like "Layered Map 4/5/22, 11:00 AM"

Using Map Packs

1. Tap the layers icon in the bottom left corner to open the Map Packs menu

Gaia GPS

2. From the Map Packs menu, you can:

- Make an Existing Map Pack Active on the Map

- Make an Overlay Active on the Map

- Browse and Add Curated Map Packs

- Create Your Own Custom Map Packs

- Edit or Delete Map Packs

Make an Existing Map Pack Active on the Map

Make an Overlay Active on the Map

You can put a transparent overlay like Air Quality, Wildfires, Slope Angle, or Private Land on top of the active Map Pack. This is particularly useful if your Map Packs only one base map, like Gaia Topo or Satellite.

Gaia GPS

1. Tap an overlay to make it active on the map.

2. It's possible to have multiple overlays active, and all active overlays will be highlighted in gray.

3. Tap an overlay again to deactivate it.

4. Long press on an overlay to adjust the opacity, then tap Save to save the changes.

5. You can also long press on the overlay to view the description and map legend of the source, or to remove the overlay.

Browse and Add Curated Map Packs

The Gaia GPS cartography team curated several popular map combinations. You can add one of these Map Packs with these steps:

Gaia GPS

1. Tap Map Layers icon > Add Map Packs

2. Search or scroll the list, or select a category icon to see the available Map Packs. Tap on a Map Pack to get more information about it.

3. Tap Add (upper right corner) to add the Map Pack to your Map Packs Menu. Before tapping Add, you can optionally adjust the opacity and order of the layers. After you tap Add, the Map Pack will appear in the Map Packs menu.

4. Tap back, select the Map Pack, and then tap the 'x' in the upper right-hand corner of the drawers or swipe the drawer down to see the Map Pack active on the map.

Create Your Own Custom Map Packs

You can create your own Map Pack with any combination of sources. Here's how:

Gaia GPS

1. Tap Map Layers icon > Add Map Packs > Build a New Map Pack

2. Tap Add Layers. You can find sources by searching, looking in the Recommended menu, or browsing the All Layers categories. You'll find popular overlays like Private Land and Slope angle in the Feature/Weather Overlays category.

3. When you find a source you want to include in the Map Pack, tap on it. This takes you to an information page about the source. Tap Add in the upper right corner. Tap the back button to go back to the add sources view. Add more sources if desired.

4. Tap the back arrow until you are on the edit view. If desired, adjust the sliders and drag and drop the sources to change the order. Drag the drawer down to see a preview of the Map Pack on the map. Tap the Edit Info button to give your Map Pack a name and description.

5. Tap Add to save your custom Map Pack. This will take you back to the Search Map Packs view.

6. Tap the back arrow. This will take you to the initial Map Packs view, where you'll see that your new Map Pack is available to select in the Map Menu. Tap the custom Map Pack to make it active on the map. Swipe the drawer all the way down or tap the 'x' to return to the main map.

Edit or Delete Map Packs

With Map Packs enabled, you may need to edit the Map Pack to adjust the opacity of the sources in the Map Pack. Follow these steps to edit the sources, opacities, name, or the description of a Map Pack:

Gaia GPS

It was good for a long time. I paid for the yearly subscription. Recently, after the last update (v7.1.4), when I record, the tracks become inconsistent and the elevation gain resets, making it useless. I have allowed location access and exempted it from the Android 9 energy saver. I will give a better rating once this is fixed. After the update (v7.1.5), tracking is working again. Although, I miss the feature of enabling or disabling entire folders. After the folder update, everything works perfectly. Thank you for the great service!

I went hiking on a trail with many shortcuts and intersections. Even though I'm experienced in the wilderness, I found myself unsure of the way back. I noticed others leaving piles of rocks and marks in the dirt to find their way. But with Gaia recording my path, I didn't have to worry or guess. The battery usage is minimal compared to other apps I've tried. The Gaia team really knows what they're doing!

This app is not dependable at all for survival. It crashes a lot, especially when it goes in the background. It even freezes my device. This happens on both my devices where I have it installed. It locks up almost every time I try to do something. Want to save a waypoint? Crash. Hit "Record"? Crash. Even if you're doing nothing, crash. The layout of the interface is not good. In portrait mode, about half of the map gets hidden by the buttons. Why are the "Record" and "Take picture" buttons duplicated on both sides of the UI in portrait mode? And there's this huge chunk of white space to the left of the Search button. Why waste so much space on the interface with nothing there? Also, the Distance and Ascent features just clutter the UI unless you're recording a trip. It's just bad design. I'd rather see the map than useless buttons and blank spaces. When saving an area, I can't adjust the red square size until I cancel and try again. I still can't figure out how to save any map layers that show useful details. The first time I tried the "save map along route" option, I only got the roads I was traveling on. If I'm in an area without cell reception and need to take a detour, tough luck, now I'm lost.

I used a high-quality GPS app on my phone for many years. Then they increased the yearly fee to $250, so I decided to try something new. I found GAIA and went on a hike with it. It's incredibly easy to use and has a really user-friendly design. I liked it so much that I visited their website and got a subscription to download maps since I live in an area with poor cell service. I highly recommend it. However, I did notice one issue with the program. Sometimes, the map stops updating on the screen randomly. When this happens, I have to close and reopen GAIA to refresh the map. Despite this glitch, it seems like the app is still gathering location data even when the screen appears frozen.

I'm testing out this app that was highly recommended both online and on YouTube, so I decided to give it a try. I chose the basic membership as I wanted to use the map download feature, which I find worth the fee. It's easy to create my own walks, save them, and sync them across multiple devices. I use my iPad to plan routes and walks, then easily sync them with my phone. I particularly enjoy the option to set a start or home point on the map, making it easy to navigate back to where I began. This app is superb for walking, camping, and bushcraft activities.

So, here's the deal. Whenever I try to use the app for tracking, my phone decides to suddenly shut down on its own. I've attempted to fix this issue by reinstalling the app multiple times, even updated my phone to the latest Android 13, but still no luck. It's pretty frustrating, especially if you're out in the wilderness relying on it. Now, I must admit, there are some things about the app that I do like, but man, those icons on the map are just way too big and they refuse to resize. It would be great if there was a feature to edit a bunch of waypoints all at once. Oh, and changing the name of a track after creating it? Good luck with that! When you hit 'edit', there's absolutely no option to rename it. Such a bummer.

I really like this app, even the free version! I was in a remote area without cell service, driving through deep canyons with winding roads. With the free version, I could see my exact location in real time and find my way to the nearest town. I'm definitely going to upgrade to the premium version and use it as my main navigation app. Update: I purchased the full version and it beats pretty much any other navigation app out there, including Google Earth and iOverlander!

I've been trying out this tracking app a few times now. It's really good, especially for mapping new trails accurately. I like that you can choose the mode of transport you're using. Also, you can search for nearby trails and see how difficult they are. It's definitely worth giving it a go! I'll share more once I've explored more features.

Hey there! Have you heard of GAIA GPS? It's been our trusty companion for hiking adventures for the past two years. It's absolutely fantastic for planning our hikes and navigating the trails while we're out there. Sometimes the little blue dot that shows our position might be a bit off, but it fixes itself pretty quickly when it picks up new satellite signals. When we find ourselves off the trail or bushwhacking, GAIA GPS helps us stay on track with confidence. Quick tip: If you want to conserve battery life, remember to switch your phone to Airplane mode and turn off the screen. You can always toggle Airplane mode back off when you need to. Happy hiking!

I have been utilizing Alltrails pro for quite some time, encountering some frustrating problems but finding it highly beneficial. However, a significant setback occurred as years' worth of maps suddenly disappeared from my phone's SD card. Upon contacting support, I was advised to reinstall the app and redownload the maps. Unfortunately, the option to save to the SD card is no longer available. Subsequently, I decided to try GAIA, initially on the free version and then upgrading to the paid subscription a week later. In comparing the two applications, I found GAIA to be a superior choice for several reasons. Firstly, it allows users to trace the outline of the desired map for download, rather than being restricted to a rectangular area. Additionally, you have the ability to select the map resolution before initiating the download process. Most notably, GAIA offers the advantageous feature of saving maps directly to a microSD card. After evaluating both apps thoroughly, I ultimately found that GAIA emerged as the preferred choice for my needs and preferences.
