PAIRING, SYNCHRONIZATION AND SHARING

With the Garmin Explore app, it's possible to connect your smartphone or tablet with your compatible Garmin device to synchronize and exchange information for adventures in remote areas. Enjoy downloadable maps that facilitate navigation regardless of location.

• The Garmin Explore application requires SMS permissions to enable sending and receiving text messages from your Garmin devices. Additionally, call log access is necessary to show incoming calls on your devices.

• Ongoing GPS usage in the background has the potential to significantly reduce battery life.

OFF-THE-GRID NAVIGATION

When connected to a compatible Garmin device, the Garmin Explore app transforms your mobile device into a tool for outdoor navigation, trip planning, mapping, and more — operational even without Wi-Fi connectivity or cellular service.

LOCATION SEARCH TOOL

Easily find geographical points related to your adventures, such as starting points for trails or mountain peaks.

MAP STREAMING

During pre-trip preparations, you can utilize the Garmin Explore app to stream maps while on cellular or Wi-Fi networks, which saves both time and storage on your device. Download maps for offline use when you're outside cellular coverage.

TRIP PLANNING MADE SIMPLE

Create your next journey by acquiring maps and formulating courses. Indicate your starting and ending locations, and the app will automatically design a course you can sync with your compatible Garmin device.

ACTIVITY DATABASE

Within the Saved section, examine and modify your organized information, including saved waypoints, tracks, courses, and activities. Preview map thumbnails for easy identification of your journeys.

SAVED COLLECTIONS

The collections feature allows for quick retrieval of all data linked to any particular trip, simplifying the process of finding specific courses or locations.

CLOUD STORAGE FACILITY

Your created waypoints, courses, and activities will synchronize automatically to your Garmin Explore web account when connected to cellular or Wi-Fi, ensuring your activity data is preserved via cloud storage. A Garmin account is essential for this service.

What is Garmin Training Status and how can I use it?

Has your Garmin watch ever said you're "too strained" or "unproductive"? Here's the lowdown on what it means.

Whether you're training for a marathon, preparing for a cycling race, or just looking to improve your overall fitness, it's important to understand how your training affects your performance.

That's where Garmin's "Training Status" comes in handy.

What is Training Status?

Training Status is a multi-layered analysis feature offered by Garmin watches that assesses your fitness level, analyzes training volume and intensity, and clarifies the relationship between training and performance.

[How training status is calculated]

Garmin analyzes your training status based on the following factors:

■ Acute training load

It indicates the load that exercise puts on the body.

When you record an activity with your Garmin watch, the load is calculated.

The load decreases over time and disappears after 10 days.

Your appropriate training load range is determined based on your current fitness level and exercise history.

■VO2 Max (maximum oxygen intake)

VO2 Max is an important indicator of cardiopulmonary function and aerobic exercise capacity.

Garmin watches estimate your VO2 Max by analyzing your heart rate and performance data.

When cycling, this can be measured using a power meter such as the Rally RS200.

Pairing a bike computer like the Edge 1050 with a heart rate monitor like the HRM 200 will give you even more accurate data.

■HRV status (heart rate variability )

HRV (heart rate variability) refers to the variability in the intervals between heartbeats.

Unstable or out of normal range HRV indicates stress or delayed recovery.

HRV is only measured while you are sleeping, so it's important to wear your Garmin watch while you sleep to get accurate data.

[Training status types]

Your Garmin watch will display eight different training statuses: ("No Status" if data is insufficient, "Paused" if your training status is paused).

Peaking

Ideal conditions. Your fitness level will increase while your training load is reduced.

This is commonly seen during the tapering period before a race.

Productive

Your training will be effective and your fitness level will improve.

It's important to maintain the right balance between recovery and training.

Maintaining

Maintain your current fitness level.

If you want to improve further, you will need to adjust your training load.

Too much load (Strained)

Lack of rest can negatively impact performance.

It is also important to take into account your lifestyle and health.

Unproductive

Fitness levels are declining.

It takes into account not only excessive training but also the effects of nutrition, stress, and sleep quality.

Overreaching

The training load is too high and your body isn't able to recover.

Possible poor performance and abnormal HRV.

Recovery

Visible during periods of low intensity activity.

Suggests maintenance or slight decline in fitness levels.

Detraining

Your fitness level has declined due to a long break from training.

summary

Garmin's training status allows you to better understand the effects of your training and aim for optimal performance. Make use of it and improve the quality of your training!

Exciting news! A fantastic new app is now available for the GPSMAP 66 Series and the Instinct outdoor devices. This replaces the old Base Camp mobile app. It's a fresh start, bringing enhanced features and an improved user experience. Perfect for your outdoor adventures!

Sync with the watch is back up and running! The app can be a little tricky to navigate, but it boils down to two main features. First, it offers offline maps by region, including topographical, OpenStreetMap, and satellite views. Second, it manages synchronization of Collections across your watch, phone, and the Explore website. It also supports offline syncing of activity data and allows you to send GPX tracks from your phone straight to your watch.

Got a white screen after accepting the agreement? No worries. Head to the Android settings for Garmin Explore. Look for permissions and turn on contacts, location, and storage. Once done, restart the app. It should work smoothly now. Good luck!

This app used to be fantastic. The update in October 2024 changed everything. Now it's a subscription model, and they took away many useful maps. The user interface is cluttered, and the app often lags. They swapped out Garmin maps for what seems like Osmand maps. Such a disappointment. It was my go-to for navigation, but now it feels ruined. Downloading has become a hassle, and paying for this lesser version of something that was once free makes no sense. Definitely not happy about these changes.

Finally getting to work with the 64S. It's been a goal since I bought it two or three years ago. I held off on beta firmware, but now it’s officially rolled out. Such a fantastic device. Excited to upload while I'm on the go. It took a while, but definitely worth the wait!

The latest update came out, promising fixes to some bugs. I have a GPSMAP 66s, but the app still struggles to sync with it. I disconnected and forgot the device, set everything up again from scratch. Frustrating experience. The routes show up as straight lines without any details. Planning a trip feels impossible with this app. Syncing is slow or just doesn’t work most of the time. Honestly, I'm really disappointed. This is the worst app I've ever used.

Releasing software like this feels embarrassing. Searching by address alone? Not an option. Why not? Who knows. The search takes forever. Picture this: I’m biking, using my Garmin watch for navigation. I only have the address. I try searching it in Garmin Explore, hoping to send it to my watch as a destination. Can I do that without feeling frustrated? Absolutely not.

InReach users face some serious issues with the Explore app. Earthmate had its flaws but allowed map downloads and provided reliable updates on the current position of the InReach device. Users could carry their phones without worrying about accidentally triggering the SOS function by putting it in their pockets. The Explore app lacks these features and constantly runs a synchronization service that fills up the notification bar. Overall, this app feels very poorly tested, leading to a disappointing experience for users.
