Google Family Link is an app with parental control features to ensure your family's online safety. Customizable tools like Family Link are available to cater to each family's unique technology usage, aiding in the development of healthy digital habits. Users can monitor their child's device activities, track device location, manage privacy settings, and more efficiently with Family Link.

Key Features of Family Link:

Setting Digital Guidelines:

- Enforce screen time restrictions: Schedule downtimes for your child's device and set limits on app usage to promote a balanced digital lifestyle.

- Regulate age-appropriate content access: Monitor and approve apps your child downloads. Choose between supervised YouTube content or YouTube Kids for a safer viewing experience.

Managing and Securing Your Child's Account:

- Safeguard privacy: Utilize permissions management controls to oversee your child's data usage. Manage website and extension permissions through Chrome and control app access on your child's device.

- Enhance account security: Access your child's account settings via Family Link. Parents can modify or reset passwords, update personal details, or delete accounts when necessary.

Staying Connected on-the-go:

- Location tracking: Easily locate your children by tracking their device locations on a shared map provided they have their device with them.

- Receive notifications: Family Link sends important alerts like arrival/departure notifications, allows ringing devices, and displays remaining battery life.

Crucial Details:

- Compatibility with Family Link tools may vary depending on your child's device.

- Children can freely install app updates without approval, but parents need to authorize new app installations. Parents should regularly monitor and adjust app permissions through Family Link.

- Review and disable unwanted apps on supervised devices to restrict usage, noting that some pre-installed apps may not be removable.

- For device tracking, the child's device must be powered on, active, and connected to the internet either through data or Wi-Fi.

- Parental controls on Family Link are accessible only with supervised Google accounts, granting children access to Google services while establishing digital rules set by parents.

- Although Family Link enhances online safety by empowering parents to manage their child's online presence, it does not make the internet entirely secure. The app enables parents to guide their child's online activities and decide the best safety measures for their family.

How to configure Google Family Link

Google Family Link

Now that you’ve gone through the admittedly arduous task of connecting Family Link let’s get you using it to its fullest potential. From here on out, everything takes place on the parent device unless otherwise specified. There are a lot of things you can do so we’ll cover each one individually.

Locating the child’s phone

Google Family Link

There is a specific card in the Family Link app for locating the child’s phone. This should be on by default and is immediately accessible when you tap on your child’s name in the app. You can easily find your child’s phone (and hopefully, your child) with this feature. This also works well as a Find My Phone service in case your child leaves their phone somewhere.

Parental controls

Google Family Link

There is a card with a Settings title. This lets you access basic parental controls. Tap the blue Manage text to access all of your options. From here, you can restrict the content your child sees on Google Play and manage filters on Google Chrome, YouTube, Google Search, Google Assistant, Google Photos, location, and others.

The Settings card is almost always the first one you see at the top of the Google Family Link home page for your child’s device. The View all apps card is usually a bit further down the list.

Track your child’s activity

Google Family Link

The second card down on the list shows your child’s actual activity. You can see the apps they use and for how long with fancy bar graphs. There is a shortcut on this card to the app restrictions screen if you decide that your kid is done playing that game they’ve been buried in all day.

A separate card shows you what apps and games your child have installed on their device. That way, you can keep track of what they download and what they’re doing. You can also tap the View all apps link on the app’s card to set usage limits on any app on the phone.

Many bad reviews talking about notifications not working. App used for almost 5 years, now it doesn't work. Locations saved do not notify anymore, have to go into app to see them. Have to hit refresh, but it spins and never refreshes. Updated phone and child's phone, didn't fix the issue.

This app has some issues. If you have multiple devices, you can't shut them down separately. It will shut down both at the same time. The location range of 650ft is not very effective. Also, it erased all my data and only recognized one device instead of two. Even after following the steps, it doesn't show the second device but still puts it in downtime as scheduled. This app is not good.

This app is awesome! You have so much control over what your child does. They can't download any apps without asking you first. Plus, you can see where they are on a map. It's a great tool for keeping an eye on their screen time. You can decide how long they can use their screens and create a schedule for them. It's super handy, especially when they need to focus during exams.

This app is great for managing kids' screen time. It would be even better if we could group apps together, like putting all games in one folder. Then I could set a time limit for all those apps at once. Currently, I can only set an overall time limit for everything. But the existing features are really good.

I love the way of parenting with technology. It's great for keeping my family safe online and managing screen time easily with Google's family link.

I've been using the app for a while now, but there's this one basic feature that many people have been asking for and it's still not there. I did give my feedback. It's frustrating that even if you select 'always allow', the messaging app doesn't work when the phone is locked. It's annoying when you want to limit phone use but still allow your child to text family. I think it would be better to have specific time frames instead of broad time limits for apps. I'm not planning to send my suggestions to Google because I doubt they will even be noticed.

This app is great! Setting it up on different phones was a little confusing at first, but once I understood how it all works, it's actually very easy to use and has lots of useful features. The best part is that it's free, unlike most similar apps which require payment. You can choose to pay for additional features, but I haven't needed them so far. Another bonus is that the app uses Google's location and map services, so not only can you monitor and control your child's phone, but you can also always know its location.

It's simple to use and has customizable settings for each child. You can control screen time, web usage, and apps. It even makes a sound to help you find a misplaced device. I can't emphasize enough how great this is. It syncs with the family app library, allowing kids to choose pre-approved apps independently. I'm thrilled that this product exists. One sneaky trick I love is silently locking their devices when they ignore me, which always gets them to check on me!

It works really well! I would suggest it to anyone who wants to monitor their kids' activities. You can control what they have access to and even shut down their phone when necessary. It's amazing that it's a free app.

The app is really good and helpful, but the notification timing needs improvement. It would be great if parents could see what kids are doing on their phones, like the time spent on YouTube and what they are watching. Other apps offer this feature, so adding it to Family Link would be awesome. Overall, I think the app has room for improvement.
