How does Google Lens work?

The Google Lens app is only available to download on Android devices, and the technology is integrated into Android cameras. However, there are a couple of ways that all phone users can access Google Lens. Here are the 4 main ways you can use Google Lens on your smartphone or tablet:

Google Lens app (Android users only): Download the app and take a picture of the thing you’d like to know more about. This is probably the simplest way to access Google Lens if you have a vision impairment because you don’t have to navigate to the Lens feature – you’re already in the right place. You can also use Google Assistant – the virtual assistant on Android phones – to launch the Google Lens app. If you have Google Assistant set up, say ‘Hey Google’ or gesture to activate it and say "Use Google Lens", or tap the keyboard icon in the lower-right corner to type the same command.

Camera (Android users only): Android users can access Google Lens by opening their camera and tapping the Lens button. Alternatively, you can use a screen reader to locate the Lens button, then tap it. Once your camera has the Lens interface, take a photo and Google will bring up information about the subject of your photo.

Google Photos (all phones): Open the app, select a photo, and use a screen reader to locate the Lens icon. Once you’ve tapped the Lens icon, Google will provide a search option or a translate option.

Google app (all phones): Open the app and click the Lens icon in the search bar, or use a screen reader to tell you where to find the Lens icon and then tap it. Next, choose a photo from your camera roll and Google will tell you more information about what’s in your image.

Circle to Search[edit]

On January 17, 2024, Samsung Electronics and Google announced Circle to Search, a new feature that allows users to search the web by tapping on circling images that features Lens integration, the feature was originally just on Samsung Galaxy S24 and the Pixel 8, but expanded on other phones of those products, as well as the iOS operating system (via the Google app) and the Google Chrome web browser (albeit known as Search with Lens).

PROS

Simple point-and-scan operation

Recognizes objects, people, and places

Built-in QR code scanner

Robust text translation that works offline

CONS

Not supported in some regions

Availability[edit]

Google officially launched Google Lens on October 4, 2017, with app previews pre-installed into the Google Pixel 2, not yet widely available for other devices. In November 2017, the feature began rolling out into the Google Assistant for Pixel and Pixel 2 phones. A preview of Lens has also been implemented into the Google Photos app for Pixel phones.[6] On March 5, 2018, Google officially released Google Lens to Google Photos on non-Pixel phones. Support for Lens in the iOS version of Google Photos was made on March 15, 2018. Beginning in May 2018, Google Lens was made available within Google Assistant on OnePlus devices as well as being integrated into camera apps of various Android phones. A standalone Google Lens app was made available on Google Play in June 2018. Device support is limited, although it is not clear which devices are not supported or why. It requires Android Marshmallow (6.0) or newer. On December 10, 2018, Google rolled out the Lens visual search feature to the Google app for iOS. In 2022, Google Lens gradually replaced the reverse image search functionality of Google Images, first by replacing it in Google Chrome and later by making it officially available as a web application. A July 2023 update to Google's chatbot Bard integrated Google Lens, allowing users to contextualize their prompts by uploading images and adding image retrieval functionality.

Oh, and did we mention that it can also quickly scan QR codes and barcodes? Yup, Google Lens is the multitasking champion you never knew you needed. So why wait? Dive into a world of convenience, knowledge, and fun with Google Lens today!

I really love this app! It's super useful for so many things. When I need to find an answer, browse through photos, or translate some text, it's just a few clicks away. I'm really happy with how this app performs and I would definitely suggest that you give it a download too. Occasionally, there might be a message saying "Something went wrong, you will get notified when the lens are ready. Or try again". Just wait for the notification to pop up and then you can check out the results. Some people might not receive notifications for various reasons, but that's okay.

That's great to hear! It sounds like you've been really enjoying using the Google Assistant and Google Lens lately. The way they work together is really impressive, isn't it? I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with Google Lens so far. It must be so cool to have it identify various dog breeds, products, and even help with translating restaurant menus for you. It's awesome how technology can make our lives easier in those little ways. Keep exploring and benefiting from these features - it's exciting to see how they may evolve and improve in the future!

It's super convenient and trustworthy. For busy bees like me who are always rushing around multitasking and handling a million things at once, this tool is a real lifesaver. Just snap a quick photo of whatever you need, and bam! It pops up right there for you. The straightforward options it offers really streamline my workflow and help me get things done more efficiently.

Wow, I came across this really cool app recently and it's seriously impressive! I used it to identify a flower and not only did it correctly tell me the species, but it even got the variety right too. Then I tested it on a landscape picture in my desk calendar, and it amazed me by identifying the country and location. I also tried it on some antiques - a plate, carnival glass, and Fenton pieces - and it nailed every identification, even getting the pattern right on the first try! And it's not just good at identifying things, it also does a fantastic job with real-time translation. It's just mind-blowing!

I've been really enjoying this app a lot. My favorite part is that it reads to me when I'm too tired to read myself. Although, sometimes the pauses it takes feel a bit off and disrupt the flow of the text. But hey, it does get it right at times. It's not a huge issue for me, just a small hiccup. On top of that, it can translate text into different languages pretty accurately. So overall, I think it's a pretty great app 👍

That sounds like a great idea! It would be really helpful if there was a feature in the app where you could just type in a word or phrase from a pdf, document, or screenshot that you've captured, and then the app would find and highlight or enlarge that specific text for you. This would save a lot of time especially when dealing with long documents that we don't have the patience to read entirely. Just imagine taking a quick picture of the document, typing in the keyword you're interested in, and having the Google Lens app zoom in on that exact part - it would make things so much easier!

I had this mysterious spider in my house, and thanks to Google Lens, I could quickly figure out what it was. It's really handy for capturing screenshots to explore links, phone numbers, or look up more info about stuff you see. Google Lens, with its AI technology and smart features, is a game-changer in tech innovation. It can help with simple tasks like scanning a link instead of typing it manually, all the way to identifying dangerous creatures like poisonous spiders almost instantly, which could save someone's life. This app is versatile and simply amazing. I'd rate it 7 out of 5 stars!

I discovered this awesome app that comes in handy for things I can't easily find on Google. One feature I particularly appreciate is its ability to translate text when I'm in a different state or country. However, there's one thing that keeps bothering me - the constant voice suggestions like "Take a photo of text to translate" or "Tap shutter button to search." It gets pretty annoying, and unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate a way to disable it. This sometimes makes me reluctant to use the app. Does anyone happen to know how to turn off this feature?

I'm loving this app! It's so simple to use, and I've been taking lots of photos of plants and animals. Every day, I learn about new bugs - it's like discovering something new all the time! Identifying leaves is a breeze, it only takes a second. Just tonight, I came across a Forest Bug with the help of the app! Plus, it provides information about whatever you're photographing. I've only had the app for a few days, but I can't wait to explore its features more. I'll definitely be recommending it to my family and friends. It's such a fantastic educational tool for curious minds of any age.
