The Google Pixel Watch might not be a perfect smartwatch, but it's the one Pixel phone users have been waiting for. Good looks, smart software and the help of Fitbit's fitness tracking features make a strong showing for a first-generation device.

Separating the device's true performance from the excitement of a brand-new flagship smartwatch for this Pixel Watch review wasn't a simple task. The best of Google and Fitbit united? It almost sounded too good to be true; and, for the most part, it lives up to its promises. Google apps run smoothly and Fitbit's health-tracking is as holistic as ever.

But as time went on with the Pixel Watch, some inconveniences presented themselves that are uncharacteristic for a $349 smartwatch, though unsurprising for a version 1.0 device. The battery life feels very un-Fitbit, and the big bezel is a missed opportunity. There was also a worrying moment when I thought I would never get the watch strap back on my review unit, though I did eventually get a grasp on the interchangeable band mechanism.

The watch faces aren't very creative and don't feel well connected to Pixel devices. It seems like they weren't given much attention, and the watch's functions are quite basic, not as advanced as those on the cheaper Apple Watch SE. Google should replace the UI design team and come up with a more beautiful and practical interface. The current one is not impressive and lacks real integration.

So, you know when you pick a photo for your watch face and it tells you to edit the photos in the phone's app? Well, after you do that, you can't really move or change the photo at all. It just decides where to put the photo on its own. This makes it hard to use selfies or close-up shots as your watch face photo. It would be great if they could fix this so we can adjust the photo to focus on what we want.

We can't customize the watch much, other than what's already loaded. We only get up to 4 preloaded faces and can only add two more. I wish we could have as many faces as Samsung or Apple watches offer and be able to customize them with up to 8 items. It would be great if we could choose to have 6 items on the face like music controls, phone access, heart rate, step count, date, and more all on one screen.

So, I had an Apple watch and then got a Pixel watch. I was really shocked to see that the Pixel watch is not as customizable. It's actually quite silly that you can't even change the notification sounds. Also, the watch doesn't work smoothly with a Pixel phone like I thought it would. For instance, it gets frustrating when I'm using Android Auto in my car and try to start navigation by saying "Hey Google." The assistant on my watch responds and starts navigating on the watch instead of Android Auto. It feels like it's still a work in progress.

It's a great watch and has everything I need. I like all the features, such as step counter and getting notifications and emails.

There's this app, right? It's not good at all. It's like, every time I use it, there are more things that don't work properly. At first, it was the sunrise and sunset thing, now every watch face I want to change only has 3 options, one of which is useless. I can't keep resetting my watch just because the app keeps messing up! Google really needs to sort out their programming - it's really bad! Update: Now it's even worse, down to only 2 options!
