Using Experience
The KAIST Library recently added around 500 e-books that are accessible through a smartphone application provided by Korea’s largest bookseller, Kyobo. Available on both Apple’s App Store and the Android Market, the Kyobo eBook application gives its users access to a large selection of books that is just a touch away.
The application itself offers a myriad of Korean digital e-books of all categories, some of which are free of charge and others available for purchase, and the company is currently adding more than 1,000 books to its selection every month.
The process of using the Kyobo eBook application seemed quite complicated when I read the guidelines, but the entire process turned out to be pretty straightforward and it took no longer than ten minutes. First, I downloaded the application through Apple’s App Store, which took about two minutes with a strong Wi-Fi signal. When the application icon first appeared on my phone, I visited the KAIST Library website (library.kaist.ac.kr) in order to gain access to the books listed under the KAIST Library. This is a mandatory step for KAIST users in order to sync the school identification to Kyobo’s mobile service.
I followed the directions and logged on to the library homepage using my KAIST student ID and portal password. Selecting the “e-books” link under “e-Resources” led to another website, one that is exclusive for e-books and audio books. I then obtained a mobile ID by converting my KAIST student ID number to another nine-digit number by adding the number 0 at the front.
Through these simple procedures, I found myself borrowing books via the Kyobo application in no time. According to the Kyobo e-book regulations, users can borrow up to five e-books for seven days. Books expire and are automatically returned when they are due, eliminating overdue fees even when you forget to do so yourself – a great advantage with digital books.
The application is one of the most rewarding that I have had on my phone so far. I have already finished around five books in less than two weeks, since I was able to read whenever I had time. Having access to thousands of books in my hands regardless of time and location, I once again experienced wholeheartedly the revolution the 21st century has gone through.
The sales of digital books have been prospering ever since the beginning of the products of e-book pioneers such as Amazon’s Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook. The changes that the e-book industry has gone through is mind-boggling and to some, offensive. Nevertheless, it is true that digital books have promoted reading among all age groups with their convenient and inexpensive nature.
Last week on November 22, Kyobo also launched its own 5.7-inch e-reader with mirasol display, with over 90,000 e-books and video lectures as well as social networking services. At the turn of a new year, it is easier than ever to access books whenever and wherever.
Other bookstores in Korea have launched their own applications for smartphones and tablet PCs. Youngpoong Bookstore Co. and Bandi & Luni’s Bookstore have their own applications for easier access to books from any location. For example, Bandi & Luni’s application, Bookself, includes a barcode scanning service so that users can readily search any book at their fingertips. Bookself also provides coupons for book series and a 10% discount for a selection of new releases.
There is a Korean proverb that states “books are food for the mind and soul.” Rather than a hardcover literature or a printed paperback, try downloading a digital version and immerse yourself in the e-book fever. Feed yourself in the season of reading.

Can I purchase a book that is not available for search or is out of stock/out of print?
Most books that do not appear in your search are out of stock or out of print, so please check the [Include out of stock/out of print products] box in the search options and try searching again.
Books marked as out of stock or out of print are often difficult to obtain as they are no longer being published by the publisher and are often out of stock.
In this case, we cannot guarantee a specific purchase time even if you request it.
If you would like to check whether these books are available for purchase, please use the 1:1 inquiry form at the customer center and we will do our best to check and respond.

If I order books from overseas, how long will it take to receive them?
1. Books that are available for online ordering are automatically ordered from overseas dealers (B&T) as soon as payment is completed, and it takes approximately 1-2 weeks on business days for the books to arrive.
2. Special orders can be supplied within 4-6 weeks. If purchase is difficult due to local publisher circumstances, you will be notified within 2-3 weeks.
※ Please understand that orders placed on weekends or holidays may be delayed by 1-2 days from overseas.
Also, the book delivery date may be delayed due to local circumstances in the U.S. ex) Christmas, Thanksgiving, holidays, etc.

Can I modify (cancel/change) my order?
The product you ordered will be processed in the following steps.
You can modify (cancel/change) your order by logging in to Order/Delivery Inquiry.
For non-member orders, you can log in using the email address and password you entered when placing your order.
※ For company-delivered products (albums/DVDs/gifts/children's collections), order modification is only possible when the order progress status is [Order received].
- Processing steps 1, 2, and 3 are the steps where orders are received and payment is processed, and order cancellation is possible.
For online deposits, the cancelled amount will be temporarily converted to a deposit until your refund account is confirmed.
(During the 3rd stage of product preparation, order cancellation may not be possible depending on the status of the book preparation. If you wish to cancel, please contact the customer center to make the request.)
- In the 4th stage of processing, the books you ordered are being shipped from the logistics center, so order cancellation is not possible.
- In the 5th stage of processing, the ordered books are packaged and handed over to the courier, so order cancellation is not possible.

How long will it take to receive my order if I order it?
The actual date on which you will receive the product you ordered is the "estimated shipping date + delivery date."
The 'estimated shipping date ' only indicates the time the book will be prepared based on working days, and the delivery time refers to the period of time it is actually delivered to the customer via courier outside of the estimated shipping date.
'Expected shipping date ' is different depending on the product, and the delivery time may vary slightly depending on the region, but it usually takes about 1 to 3 days. (It may take up to 7 days for islands and mountainous areas.)
* The expected delivery date is calculated based on business days, and delivery is not available on Sundays, public holidays, or other non-business days. (Delivery by the post office is not available on Saturdays, which are non-business days.)
* If the ordered product is out of stock at our company, we will request a new order from the supplier and then ship it, so it will take approximately 3 to 7 days longer.
* If you change your address after completing your order, the delivery schedule may change.
* Delivery delays due to force majeure, such as natural disasters, are excluded from the delivery period during that period.
* For faster delivery, dawn delivery or Sunday delivery may be applied depending on the time of order and delivery area.

The item I ordered hasn't arrived yet.
If you haven't received the book you ordered yet, please check the following.
1. If the product processing status is “packaging complete” upon order/delivery confirmation, this product has been processed for shipment by our company. If the product has been processed for shipment by our company but you have not received it within 2-3 days, please check the following.
* If you check the delivery status and see that the product you ordered is at a nearby delivery office, there are many cases where you did not receive the product because the courier company visited but was not present.
In this case, please use the Q&A <Delivery/Receipt Date Information> section of the Customer Center or call 1544-1900 (without area code) for prompt processing.
* For same-day delivery areas, delivery tracking is not available. This is because delivery is processed quickly on the same day you place your order, so tracking is meaningless.
2. If the product status is listed as out of stock/out of print when confirming your order/delivery , we do not have the product in stock and the product cannot be sent to you because the business partner no longer handles it.
In this case, we will notify you separately by email.
If you did not receive the email, it may be due to a network error, an incorrect email address, or no email address.
Please register or modify your email address in [My]'s [Member Information > Member Information Management].
3. If the product preparation status continues for a long time and the order status remains at the 'Product preparation' stage when checking order/delivery, please check the expected shipping date of the product.

I would like to exchange a defective/damaged/misdelivered item. What should I do?
If there is a defect in a product delivered via regular courier, you can apply for an exchange within 30 days from the delivery completion date on the website by going to My > Order/Delivery List > Order Details Page > Exchange Request.
※ Within 3 months after delivery, within 30 days after discovering a problem ※ However, in case of receiving by post/convenience store delivery, if you enter a general address in the return address information, the exchange will be processed by general delivery.
Please write down your order number and details in the <Report defective product/defective product> or <Return/exchange/refund> consultation at the 1:1 customer center consultation.
After confirming with the person in charge, we will re-ship the product to the address you provided when ordering. You can exchange the defective book when you receive the delivered product.
If you are unable to return the item via the courier, please submit an inquiry through the Customer Center Q&A <Return/Exchange/Refund> and we will arrange for the courier to return to collect the item.
Alternatively, you can send a cash-on-delivery return with a brief note stating the order number and reason for return.

I would like to get my deposit refunded.
Deposits can be used to purchase products at Kyobo Bookstore, and refunds can be received to your customer account. The refund period for each payment method is as follows.
- If you cancel on the same day as your order, the refund will be processed within 1-2 days (based on business days).
- The period for reflecting refunds for integrated points and affiliate points is 1 to 2 days (based on business days).
- In case of other payment methods (affiliate points, etc.), the payment method will be cancelled. In case of unavoidable circumstances (partial delivery), if there is a difference in amount, a refund will be given. In some cases, you may be required to make a new payment.

Can I return books I ordered online?
1. When requesting a return due to the customer’s change of mind or ordering error,
Exchanges for other books are not possible.
For products ordered from Kyobo Bookstore, returns can be requested within 7 days from the date of receipt of the product, but only for products that can be returned or exchanged.
The customer is responsible for paying return shipping costs.
However, if the book you wish to return is unused and the book itself is wrapped in plastic, the plastic wrapping will not be removed.
For albums, this is possible if the vinyl has not been opened and is not being played.
2. If the product you ordered is defective or differs from the contract, you can request a return within 30 days of discovering the problem.
3. Before returning the item, please prepare the return item as follows.
Please fill out the return request form on the back of the "Transaction Statement" you received with the book and prepare a sealed courier package along with the book.

How to request a refund:

If you have the product you wish to return and the cancellation form ready, you can submit a return request at Kyobo Bookstore.
4. You can apply directly on the Kyobo Bookstore My > Order/Delivery List > Order Details > [Return/Exchange Request] website, and the product will be picked up by CJ Daehan Transportation, our partner.
Before visiting the collection center, please prepare the delivery packaging by enclosing the book and the cancellation form together.
If you used convenience store delivery or post office delivery when ordering, the delivery company cannot collect the package, so you must change the address to a general address and submit the return request to CJ Daehan Transportation for normal processing.
※ When the actual payment amount of the book is refunded, excluding the postage, coupons, integrated points, etc., the return shipping fee of 2,500 won will be automatically deducted at the customer's expense, and only the remaining amount will be refunded.
Please do not pay the return shipping fee to the courier in cash or include it in the packaging of the product.
5. Personal courier return method (prepaid courier)
If you have difficulty returning the product through our customer center or website and wish to return the product by individual courier, you must freely select the courier of your choice and pay the individual courier shipping fee.

You can use any of the methods above, but if the product is returned to our logistics center, a refund will be made to the refund account you wrote on the return application form or through another refund method.
If there is no specific refund request, the first refund will be automatically made to the member's deposit that placed the order.

6. Information desk in all stores
Exchanges/refunds are available at all store information desks.
(However, exchanges are only possible for the same book in stock at the store in the case of a defective book, and cannot be exchanged for a different book.)

1) Books ordered overseas (Western books, Japanese books) cannot be returned or exchanged, except for books that are damaged/defective/misdelivered. Please be aware that overseas returns are not possible.
2) Returns/exchanges are not possible once the packaging of records, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and S/W has been opened. Please make sure to check the system specifications, etc. before purchasing.
3) Other items that cannot be returned: magazines, tapes, college entrance exam materials, photo albums, broadcasting and communication university textbooks, comics, all media items, music books, government publications, maps, various test books, aptitude test materials, Bibles, dictionaries, law books, paper, writing instruments, seasonal products, opened products, etc.
4) Gift product orders are individually returned to the seller (company), so please contact our customer service center to inquire about returns.
5) In the case of set products, only some of the products cannot be returned. If necessary, please return the entire set and then repurchase the individual products.

How do I register/cancel my membership?

1. Personal membership registration: You can register as a member through Member Registration > Personal Membership > Identity Verification or Simple Registration (email, mobile phone), SNS Verification (Naver, Kakao, Google, Apple).
2. Corporate Membership Registration: You can register as a member by going to Membership Registration > Corporate Membership > Business Registration Number Verification.
※ Members under the age of 14 and corporate members cannot easily sign up for SNS.
Cancel membership
Kyobo Bookstore respects the visitor's wishes when registering or withdrawing membership. You may withdraw freely, and the withdrawal method is as follows. Please be sure to check the notes before withdrawing membership.

Things to note when canceling membership
1. When you cancel your membership, all member information, discount coupons, integrated points, mileage, vouchers, Kyobo Cash, event Kyobo e-Cash, and purchase history will be automatically deleted and cannot be recovered.
2. Automatically deleted items (non-recoverable): All records including member information, product purchases, eBook content, discount coupons, mileage, integrated points, deposits, and Kyobo eCash.
3. As for the member ID, it is necessary information to prevent confusion in service use, fulfill the obligation to store member transaction information for the retention period stipulated by law, and provide other stable services, so re-registration with the same ID after withdrawal is not permitted.
4. However, if you have made a purchase within the past month, you cannot withdraw your membership in case of any follow-up processing related to the order.
5. When you cancel your membership, your SNS login information will also be automatically cancelled.
