What our users are saying

“I’m a school bus driver. 3 of my students are deaf. Hugo has helped me learn enough sign to have brief exchanges with them. I hope Hugo continues to teach me. The kids love that I’m trying and think it’s funny when I mess up and are eager to correct me. Thanks Hugo.”

“As a firefighter and inspector with the fire department, we do smoke alarm installations for hearing impaired individuals.I was able to utilise Hugo to allow me to communicate between the family who is hearing impaired and myself. Installing smoke alarms is a matter of life safety. Therefore being able to communicate is essential. Thank you for your App. It came in “HANDY”.”

Stan Barnes

“Hugo has been our go to from the beginning of our journey with a deaf Foster to adopt child. Easy, fast access with a 9nnth old. Hugo has gotten us through the roughest patch of baby meltdowns.”

Curiosities

- Why are Hugo and Maya virtual translators?

There is a difference between translators, interpreters and virtual translators. Today, when referring to Hugo or Maya, we use this nomenclature.

- Can I say “deaf people”?

If you thought this term was offensive, you are mistaken. It is the way they prefer to be called. On the other hand, using deaf-mute is wrong, deaf people have a voice and muteness is a different disability.

-Is Sign Language made up of “signs” or “gestures”?

At some point you must have come across the term “gestures” when referring to ASL, right? While signs are how people communicate in Sign Languages, gestures are just movements people often use as part of their communicative act.

- Is there a difference between deaf and hearing impaired people?

From a clinical point of view, what differentiates the deaf from the hearing impaired is the depth of the hearing loss. However, taking into consideration only the clinical perspective is not enough, since the different terms also carry an important cultural component: American Sign Language.

I'm totally fine with people speaking other languages, but it would be nice if they could make it clearer that the app is not in English before you download it. It feels a bit misleading, like they are just trying to get more downloads.

The app is user-friendly and helps improve ASL skills. I rated it four stars because you can only learn four words at once, which makes forming complete sentences difficult. You could break down the words and try putting them together. It's not bad, just a little disappointing.

Don't waste your money on removing ads, as it doesn't work and costs $10 annually instead of just a one-time payment. The app has some good features, but I can only give it one star until they become more transparent about the fees.

I used to like this app because it was so easy to use, but now after the update, it won't even open. They said they fixed some bugs, but now there are more bugs causing the app to crash all the time. I tried clearing the cache but it still keeps crashing.

I'm excited to start learning ASL. I think it's really cool and important since sign language is popular here. It's like being bilingual but in ASL.

Learning ASL is so much fun, I'm also teaching Autistic young adults and it's great to be able to show and share with them.

You thought the app was great and liked the effort put into it. However, you felt a bit frustrated because it only allows for one-way communication. You wish there was a feature like Google LENS that could recognize sign language in texts, so you could point your camera at it to understand and respond accordingly.

Tried to open the app but it keeps crashing. I wanted to use it because my friend does. But it doesn't work on my phone or my husband's, we both have the s23 ultra. If you can fix this, I would love to use it and give it a better rating if it works correctly.
