How does Hipcamp work?

Hipcamp is an online booking platform where visitors find unique places to stay on private land, from cabins and yurts, to campsites and RV spots. Landowners earn extra income by hosting guests for overnight stays, and all you need is a flat piece of land and access to the great outdoors to start earning.

Starting a listing is completely free and it only takes minutes from start to finish. You set your own rules, pricing, and offerings, with the ability to block important dates and build your ideal hosting schedule so you only host guests when you want. Hosts can set up direct deposit or PayPal to automatically receive earnings every week.

How do I contact a Host?

If you've read the description of a site and still have some unanswered questions or have a special request for a Host, you can get in touch with them directly!

On desktop:

For the website, on a site page, just below the site map, there is a button that says ‘Contact Host’. Clicking there will allow you to draft a message directly to your Host.

On the app:

To contact a Host through the app, go to the Property or site page. Simply click the 'Contact Host’ button that is located under the map. From there, ask anything you like!

What is a Weather Guarantee?

The Sensible Weather Guarantee is an optional purchase available during checkout that can proactively reimburse up to 100% of the daily cost of your Hipcamp stay. Reimbursements are made automatically, with no cancellations or claims required. 

What types of weather does the Weather Guarantee cover?

The Weather Guarantee covers precipitation or high temperatures determined by the official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast for each day of your camping trip. Don’t worry, you’ll be notified if your stay qualifies for reimbursement.

Can I get coverage for both precipitation and high temperatures?

No, your Weather Guarantee will cover precipitation OR high temperatures. Which is covered will be clearly stated during checkout.

What are the terms of my Weather Guarantee?

The duration of guaranteed good weather is dynamic based on the dates and location of your Hipcamp stay, so the terms of your trip’s specific guarantee will be clearly stated during checkout. You’ll receive a reimbursement from Sensible Weather (our third-party provider) if the forecasted weather each day of your trip exceeds the conditions stated in your Weather Guarantee.

Do I need to submit a claim?

No, you don’t need to submit a claim. When the forecasted weather exceeds the weather conditions stated in your Weather Guarantee, you’ll receive a text message and email to start the reimbursement process with Sensible. No complex claims process or proof of loss is required.

Who pays for the reimbursement?

All reimbursements are paid by Sensible Weather. Hipcamp isn’t liable for any Weather Guarantee reimbursements.

How much reimbursement do I receive with a Weather Guarantee?

Weather Guarantee reimbursement amounts vary and are defined at the time of purchasing your Weather Guarantee. You’re eligible to receive a daily reimbursement equal to the average daily cost of the qualifying reservation, meaning you might receive multiple reimbursements throughout your trip that together equal your entire trip cost.

How long does it take to receive my reimbursement?

Sensible will send you an email and a text message on the morning of each day you are eligible for a reimbursement. You may choose to receive your payout via PayPal or ACH. Processing times depend on your bank and chosen reimbursement method, but funds typically arrive within 3 to 5 business days.

How to change your trip dates on desktop

Login to your Hipcamp account

Make sure you log into the same account you used to book the trip!

Visit your Trips Page

Click the Trip Page button on the specific booking you're looking to update

Click the Modify trip button and select your new trip dates

Be sure to check you have entered the correct check-in and checkout date

Review your changes and click Confirm charge to submit the update

If this is an 'Instant Book' trip, the modification will be confirmed right away.

If this is a 'Request to Book' trip, the Host will be sent a new request that they have 24 hours to respond to.

If they don't respond to the request or if it is declined, your original trip details will remain in place, and you can decide to cancel your booking or message the Host to figure out an alternate plan.

How to change your trip dates on mobile web

Login to your Hipcamp account on your mobile device

Tap the 3 horizontal lines at the top left of the page

Select Trips

Find the trip you'd like to update and tap Trips page

Scroll past the Trip details and select the Modify trip button

Select the new dates you'd like to stay and click Review

If an additional charge applies, your receipt will update accordingly before confirming

Click Confirm charge to finalize the change

How to change your trip dates on the app

Launch the Hipcamp app

Tap on the Trips icon at the bottom of the screen to open your Trips page

Select the booking you would like to modify

Scroll down until you see Modify trip

Click on the new dates and click Review at the bottom

If an additional charge applies, your receipt will update accordingly before confirming

If everything is correct, click Submit
