Quickstart Guide to Jamboard

Finding and using Google Jamboard

Google Jamboard is part of Princeton ‘Google Apps for Education’ suite and so is available for the Google homepage. Navigate to https://www.google.com, log in if you are not already logged in, and then expand the Google Apps dropdown menu by clicking the icon that appears as a square of nine smaller squares (A).

Selecting Jamboard from the menu will open a page that will list your boards once you have created some.

To start creating a new ‘Jamboard’, click the orange + sign icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

The Jamboard interface

Once in a ‘jamboard’, you can write on the board with several available tools, change the background of the board, and export to a PDF file:

A. Enter or change the title of your board.

B. Navigate through the existing slides of your board and add new slides.

C. Zoom in and out

D. Select a background for the current slide. You may select solid, lined, or graph paper styles, or upload an image to use as a background.

E. Clear all the markings, or annotations, from the current slide.

F. Select a pen and ink color with which to draw on the slide.

G. Use an eraser tool.

H. Use the select tool to select items on the board to be deleted or edited.

I. Add a ‘sticky note’ in a variety of colors.

J. Insert an image into the board.

K. Use a laser pointer to highlight parts of the board.

The laser leaves a trail that gradually disappears.

L. The jamboard canvas.

Actions including the ability to download as a PDF, or image.

I have used this app with around 25 science students for professional and educational purposes. It is strong and works well across different platforms. I often use the 'download frame as a jpg' feature to give extra materials to students. Just make sure to read the terms of service and keep control of data when collaborating using this app.

I like this app a lot. The assistive pen feature to draw figures is missing now, but it is still available on the Apple version. Please add it back!

This app is great. It's a bit tricky to use on mobile, but it works really well on the computer. I like this app a lot. I give it 5 stars.

Dark mode is missing? Seems like the team working on this is different from the one for Sheets and Docs. Here are some features that should be added: more pen options like in OneNote, including different pen strokes, various backgrounds like black with dots or lines, hyperlink addition, a pen-only mode similar to OneNote, dark mode, portrait mode, stroke eraser, and improved synchronization.

Too many glitches. Only used it for 5 minutes and already deleted it. Not a fan of this app. Recommend using Google Jamboard - no need to download, saves time and data. Giving it 1 star; won't change my rating until the issues are fixed. Google Canvas and many other apps are available in the app stores. Apologies if my feedback seems harsh. Concerned about potential hacks on my device.

The feedback is great and helpful. Here are some things wanted: Support for Samsung Tablet keyboard, backing S-Pen use in Sticky Notes. Connecting with Google Drive to move the jamboard between folders. Also, extracting sticky notes in Excel/CSV format or Google Sheets.

When using your phone horizontally, the page switcher is too big. It would be better if you can move it to the right side and make it smaller or customizable.

Making art reference sheets and taking notes is easy with this app. It's a bit tricky to put multiple images on one slide. Expanding images can be difficult as you have to use 2 fingers. The images are usually small at first, which makes it challenging. To zoom in or out, you need to touch an empty space on the slide. This has caused me to accidentally move things around.

This app has a lot of bugs. I use it on my Samsung Tab S7+. When I sketch or write, weird things often happen. Sometimes, I can't even type in the sticky note. So, I switched back to using the web version with the Samsung Internet Browser.
