New features in the Karttaselain! Slope shading and forest orthophotos
We have added two new maps to the Karttaselain for Android and iOS: Slope shading and Forest orthophotos. The map options are available with an active Plus subscription or trial period.
If you are already a Plus subscriber, you can access the new data by updating the app to the latest version and start using the data in the map menu in the top right corner. If you do not have a Plus subscription yet, you can get and start using the new material via the button below.
Hill shading: Depicting different shapes of terrain
The slope shading map added to the Karttaselain helps to visualize the direction and steepness of the slope and can be used to visualize different shapes of terrain. Slope shading is produced using laser pulses or laser scanning emitted from the sky to create a reliable model of terrain elevation. The material was produced by the National Land Survey of Finland.
With slope shading, you can distinguish even the smallest paths, ruts or terrain elevations in the terrain. You can treat the slope shading as its own map layer, allowing you to distinguish the smallest details. In addition, you can choose to overlay it as a transparent layer on a topographic map or aerial photo, so that the contours of the terrain can be clearly seen.
Tip for berry pickers: As the berry picking season approaches, you can use the map to find paths in newly felled areas, which are usually the best places to pick berries after a few years of felling!
Forest orthophotos: a tool to check tree stand
Forest orthophotos are aerial photos in which the color scheme has been adjusted to make it easier to distinguish the types of forest stands. Coniferous trees appear greener on the map, and the color changes to red as the size and density of leaves of deciduous trees increase. You can also distinguish deciduous forests by the softer shape of the tree crowns. Forest orthophotos were developed with the wishes of forestry professionals in mind and produced by the National Land Survey of Finland.
Note that the color tones on the map should always be compared with the surrounding area, as the colors of different areas are affected by the lighting conditions at the time of the photo.
Usage tip: This map is suitable for both professional and recreational use. During the mushroom picking season, you can use the map to find a spruce forest suitable for picking boletus, for example!
