Five ways to use Khan Kids for back to school success

Develop early reading skills

Help children learn how to read with new phonics lessons that cover every letter of the alphabet. The expanded Letters tab in our app’s Library now includes lowercase letters, uppercase letters, beginning letter sounds, ending letter sounds, vowel sounds, and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. With over 400 lessons to choose from, options for learning the alphabet are abundant! To see the lessons, head to the app’s Library by clicking the purple book on the home screen and then selecting the Letters tab with Ollo the elephant.

Khan Academy Kids

Practice spelling and language

The Reading section of the Khan Kids app is growing. In our most recent app updates, we’ve released English Language Arts lessons that cover language skills such as spelling rules, parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adverbs), vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. All together, our reading lessons support preschool through 2nd grade standards and are accessible through the app’s Library and Learning Path. If you’re scrolling through lessons in the Library, remember that the learning level on the gray dropdown menu can be adjusted by age to access more lessons. In addition, there are now over 300 books in our Library (fiction and nonfiction) to delight eager readers.

Khan Academy Kids

Encourage problem solving

The Math and Logic content in the Khan Kids app has been reinforced with lessons to boost thinking and problem solving skills. Kids can master math practice with word problems, equations, skip counting, odd/even numbers, place value, number lines, addition, and subtraction. Build critical thinking skills with monster memory games, flexible thinking exercises, and lessons for grouping, sorting, and following directions. We even have lessons that include measurement, currency, and telling time. Speaking of time, we love hearing when math time is a highlight of the day. That’s our goal!

Khan Academy Kids

Spark curiosity by introducing new interests

We’re so excited about our growing collection of fiction and nonfiction books in the Khan Kids Library. For kids who are getting ready to attend school, we have stories with themes that talk about feelings, teamwork, friendship, and first experiences. For kids who are curious about the natural world, we have brand new science books provided by our partners at Bellwether Media and National Geographic to capture their interest. From wild animals and pets to continents and outer space, we have your young reader covered.

Khan Academy Kids

Make time for moving

Stretching and moving our bodies can help us take breaks when we need them most. Let kids reboot with new yoga videos in the Khan Kids app. These kid-friendly videos are courtesy of Alo Yoga and have fun themes like Dino Yoga, Surf Yoga, and Yoga for Focus & Flow. Each instructor guides children in a healthy routine for the mind and body. Parents, don’t be surprised if you find yourself following along too!

There are three easy ways to find lessons to assign to your students:

1. Browse the Library. Tap the tabs across the top of the screen—Letters, Reading, Math, Logic+, Books, and Videos—to find lessons for each letter of the alphabet, for numbers 1-20+, patterning, sight words, phonemes, shapes, word problems, and so much more. Tap directly on any lesson thumbnail to assign.

2. Assign from the Class Report. Go to the Students tab and select Class Reports: All Progress. Lessons are listed on the left side. Open each section until you see options for Main, Practice, and Basic. From there, you can tap to assign to students!

Khan Academy Kids

3. Go to the Search tab to find lessons by standard. There will be a dropdown menu. Use it to select the set of standards that is applicable to you. Continue progressing through the menu until you find the standard you’re looking for. If you would like to see a larger grouping of standards, you can select the (ALL) option from the dropdown menu. Tap directly on any lesson thumbnail to assign.

Khan Academy Kids

Step 4: Use progress reports to make data-informed decisions.

Our progress reports are designed to give you information about your students quickly and accurately. Access progress reports from the Students tab in your teacher view and then select Class Reports.

If you prefer an at-a-glance view of the lessons you’ve assigned, who has completed them, and the scores they received, check out the Assignments report. If you prefer to have a comprehensive view of students’ overall progression in a subject area, head over to the All Progress report. This report combines data from assignments, the Learning Path, and the Library, providing a full overview of student progress so that you can easily identify learning needs.

Here’s what you can do with our in-depth progress reports:

Assign, edit, and preview lessons directly from the report

See students’ score history on each lesson

Quickly see how far students have progressed to each domain

Identify students who have not completed assignments

Email reports to your desktop computer for easy viewing

Think of this cool learning app for kids with a "Mouse" in its name. Picture it being free. That's Khan Academy. It has tons of lessons, games, books, and fun stuff that just keeps coming. They're always adding new things made by teachers to match your kid's skills. I've told all my friends and family about it and will keep doing so.

I picked this as a learning tool for my 4-year-old. It's totally free and has no ads. I appreciate its straightforward learning approach and minimal guidance. My son is encouraged to think independently. Compared to ABCMouse, which offers a lot of help but doesn't ensure a solid understanding of basic concepts as the difficulty increases. Even though it's a bit tough, my son enjoys it. Plus, it works seamlessly when I project it from my Samsung phone to the Samsung Smart TV.

You like the app and find it fun and educational. You have one complaint/request: your child with visual impairment wants to read the library books themselves, but the text is too small on the smartphone, without an option to enlarge it. They can listen as the books are read aloud, but the highlighted text is still too small. So, you're asking for improvements to make it more accessible for visually impaired children.

This app is great because it offers lots of different stuff for free. Kids will love it and it's definitely worth checking out.

You like the app. You saw something about the kids' apps: you are not able to lock the phone buttons, so they won't close the app. If it's possible to add a toggle button for the phone controls, that would be great!

It is really great. We include it in our homeschooling lessons, but I would still use it regardless. Kids perceive it as a game- highly engaging and enjoyable! It offers activities suitable for all age groups. A 3-year-old can learn physical coordination, categorizing, tech skills, and basic math/reading. A 6-year-old can enhance reading ability, math skills, critical thinking, and more. Just remember, it's better on a big tablet screen for young kids. Best part? Absolutely FREE with no ads or subscriptions.

It could be better if it lets you save articles to read offline, access them without internet, adjust font size and colors in books, and mute the background music. The cute characters are fine, but the overall tone should sound more mature for better communication.

Thank you, Developers, for creating this amazing app. My child enjoys it a lot and is learning so much. The Super Simple Songs combined with the games are fantastic. However, there are some glitches that can be frustrating. Sometimes the app closes suddenly during play and goes back to the home screen, causing the game progress to be lost. It can also freeze on a black screen for a while before returning to the game, which tests my patience. Occasionally, clickable items are placed too close to the top of the screen, leading to unintended actions like opening the phone's menu. Another small issue is that songs are paused at awkward moments for interactive games, which triggers my perfectionism a bit. I hope these things are addressed before the official launch since we really enjoy using this app.

Kids love this app because it helps them improve in various subjects like math, reading, logic, and emotional development. The rewards and coloring options make it engaging and the best part is there are no ads. It allows kids to focus while parents can relax. My kids and I are huge fans of this app.

I think this app is really cool because it has lessons that are fun and educational for my five-year-old daughter. Even though English is not her first language, she can easily do the quizzes after following the lessons. She loves getting gifts after finishing each lesson, which motivates her to play more. It's a great way to prepare her before she starts kindergarten. Developers, you're doing a great job!
