Knights Fight 2 Guide: Tips, Tricks & Strategies to Dominate the Medieval Arena
1. The Basics Of Knights Fight 2
Getting the obvious out of the way, Knights Fight 2 is a game that takes place in a medieval setting, and it is centered on one-on-one fights against other knights — both AI and human-controlled — in a variety of different modes.
While at first, you won’t have much to your name aside from the most basic armor and weapons, you can collect new items along the way or upgrade existing pieces of equipment that could provide you with more protection and allow you to deal more damage against progressively tougher opponents. First of all, however, you will need to go through a brief tutorial stage where you will be taught the basics of fighting.
The first thing you will learn to do would be how to perform a successful block. Use the controller on the bottom left side of the screen to block in the direction your opponent is swinging — pay close attention to the attack indicator, or the triangle superimposed on your opponent, as the side that turns orange will determine the direction of your block. For example, if the right side turns orange, move the controller to the right, and if the top side turns orange, move it upward in order to successfully parry their attack.
You will then be taught how to hit, or attack your opponent — simply use the controller in conjunction with the bottom-right button with a sword on it in order to attack your opponent in the given direction. Finally, the game will brief you on how to counter-attack — once the attack indicator changes from orange to yellow, quickly hit the Attack button, corresponding with the side that changed color. This is the hardest thing to master, but arguably the most important of them all.
It is important that you pay very close attention to the tutorial, because there is no way to repeat it in case you need to jog your memory on something! There isn’t any practice mode either where you can replay the tutorial or spar with AI opponents in no-stakes situations to hone your skills for future fights in Campaign or Duels mode. Once you’ve completed the tutorial, you’re on your own, so don’t let your attention drift elsewhere while going through this stage!
Knights Fight 2 comes with two primary game modes — Campaign, which is a story mode with AI-controlled enemies, and Duel, where you will be facing other human users from around the world. The fights, or duels, in both modes, are structured the same way — each round has a 150-second time limit, and it’s best-of-three rounds much like many other fighting games have been in the long history of the genre. Each fight will also start with an overview of both knights, where you can see how your character and that of your opponent looks like, as well as their ratings in terms of Speed, Defense, and Attack, and their overall rating.
The rewards will vary depending on which more you’re playing — if you win in Duels mode, you earn a prize chest, with the most common one taking 30 minutes to unlock and rarer ones taking substantially longer than that. Prize chests may contain various cards that correspond to pieces of equipment or, in rarer occasions, Special Attacks.
Winning in Campaign mode will reward you with silver coins, which are the game’s common currency, and/or gold coins, which are the premium currency. For both modes, you can earn XP after each victory, allowing you to level up as a player, and if you lose, you won’t get any chest or any form of currency, but you will get some XP as a consolation prize of sorts.
The game won’t say it, but by tapping on your character name on the main screen, you can view your personal player stats, including your cumulative win-loss record in Duels, your progress in Campaign mode, and also your character name.
Other games will prompt you during the tutorial to change your name to one of your choosing, but through this, you can pick any name that fits within the character limit and doesn’t make use of any offensive language. (If you wish to stick with the generic knight name the game gives you based on your player ID, that’s fine as well.)
Now that we’ve gotten the bare essentials out of the way, let’s move on to some fighting tips that you may find helpful as you get your feet wet and go beyond the arguably limited scope of the tutorial stage.
2. It’s All About Defense
There probably aren’t too many other fighting games that put as much of a premium on defense as Knights Fight 2. Notice what happens if you go on an all-out offensive onslaught against an opponent, even one who is noticeably weaker than you.
Not only will you tire yourself out easily, you will also find yourself more vulnerable than you should be, allowing your opponent to hit you with vicious combos that take a huge chunk out of your health and possibly allowing them to come from behind for the win as well. Indeed, there seems to be a good reason why the game’s tutorial starts with blocking, rather than attacking as the case normally would be in fighting games.
With that all said, we would suggest that you pay especially close attention to your defensive fundamentals while learning how to play the game. When competing against other users in Duel, do not try to predict whether your opponent will be attacking from the left, from the right, or upward — doing so by blocking in those directions in advance would usually result in your opponent swinging their weapon in another direction, which means you’re essentially telegraphing your moves. Instead, rely solely on the attack indicator when defending, but parry the attack as quickly as possible or else they’ll hit you before you can make a move.
3. Counter-Attacking And Dodging – More Ways To Make Use Of Your Defense
In addition, you will also need to hone your skills in counter-attacking, or going on the attack off a defensive move. Not all counter-attacks will be successful, but in any case, you will want to start your counter-attack after a successful block. The game suggests that you make your move in a counter-attack once the indicator changes color from orange to yellow, and that’s a pretty good place to start. You probably won’t get it right the first time, but as you complete more fights against human and AI opponents alike, you should eventually get the hang of it.
What’s arguably even harder to pick up than traditional counter-attacking is the process of countering an opponent’s special attack. As the time always slows down whenever someone is performing a special move, that should ideally allow you enough time to do as the game says and move the controller and hit the Dodge or Attack button at just the right time in order to counter the move. Getting the timing perfect here is quite difficult, so we would understand it if you’re a new player who would rather opt for a traditional block rather than gamble by going for the counter.
The Dodge button is another tool you can utilize in the spirit of focusing on defensive tactics rather than offensive ones in Knights Fight 2. As you’ll learn in the tutorial, this allows you to make a quick and evasive maneuver to avoid getting hit by your opponent’s weapon. It can be quite effective if you’ve mastered your timing and know just when to hit it, but there is a drawback to using the Dodge button.
That drawback is the fact that dodging an attack expends a lot of stamina! Sure, it’s an easy way to avoid getting hit, but it’s a high-energy move that could result in a rather dreaded situation that could turn the tide in your opponent’s favor in any given fight. And that’s exactly what we will be talking about in our next tip.
4. Don’t Tire Yourself Out Too Quickly
Right below your health bar, you will see a second bar that goes down each time you perform an attacking move or use the Dodge button to evade an opponent’s attack. That, of course, is your Stamina bar, and it is strongly advised that you don’t let it run out at any time in the fight. This is something that’s easier said than done, but as long as you’re trying your best not to waste all your stamina — and this usually happens when you’re fighting too offensively — you should be on the right track.
What happens when you waste all your stamina and let it go down to zero? That’s when you will notice the screen change from colored to black-and-white, symbolizing how you’ve gassed yourself out by expending too much stamina while attacking and/or dodging. As long as the screen is in black-and-white while you’re recovering stamina (as long as you’re not expending any more of it, that is), your attacks will be weaker, your blocks will be slower and less effective, and you will not be able to dodge.
More importantly, the attack indicator will momentarily disappear until your Stamina is back to 100 percent. That could lead to all sorts of ripple effects, especially since it takes several seconds in most cases for stamina to be restored and the screen to shift back to full color. And that, as we warned in the earlier tip, is exactly what we meant by a situation that can turn the tide in your opponent’s favor.
There is only one time when we wouldn’t be too against using up your entire Stamina bar, and that’s when your opponent has only about 20 percent health remaining or less and you’ve got at least 60 percent or so remaining. At that point, you can confidently spam the attack button while varying the direction of your strikes, even if your stamina is depleted. Yes, your attacks will be weaker and that could leave you more vulnerable than usual, but it gets the job done fairly quickly, as opposed to the usual defense-oriented strategies you may employ.
5. Vary Your Offensive Moves
Not counting your Special Attack, your character in Knights Fight 2 should have three basic attacks based on the three available directions represented in the controller/joystick. Once again, we’re reiterating that defense is at the heart of the game’s fighting system, and while the best offense is usually a good defense, you can’t expect to win a lot of fights unless you initiate some offense of your own.
It’s a basic principle that applies across various other fighting games, but when attacking enemies, you should mix things up and not keep mashing the Attack button while leaving the joystick static in one direction. Aside from the disadvantage of getting tired faster, as we stated earlier, using the same type of attack every time will make you very easy to defend against when you’re fighting in Duels mode. And while the AI knights in this game aren’t the sharpest crayons in the box, the AI is smart enough to figure out when a human player is spamming the same attack repeatedly.
It may take more effort, but just as long as you’re mixing attacks that go left, right, and up, and not repeating the same attack each and every time, you’re mostly covered on the offensive end.
6. Stringing Together Combos And Defending Against Them
One good way of dealing out a lot of damage against your opponent is to string a series of hits together. Combo-chaining is indeed a valuable tool in both primary modes of Knights Fight 2, and one of the easiest way to get a combo going is to start off by using your special attack — that’s the button on the center right side of your screen that turns blue whenever it’s loaded up and ready to use.
Unleashing a special attack could deal a lot of damage against an opponent, but you can add the proverbial insult to injury by following up with several strikes as the enemy tries to regain their bearings. It isn’t explicitly stated, but these special moves can stun an opponent for a few seconds. Just make sure you time your use of the special attack so that you aren’t left too open, and bear in mind that these moves have cool down times.
Your opponents, of course, can use special attacks, and we did make mention of this earlier when talking about counter-attacking. They may or may not use it to string a combo together, but more often than not, they will take advantage of an incorrect block by attacking several times in a row while the other knight is vulnerable. The best advice we can give here is to be quick in redirecting your blocks so that you don’t get hit repeatedly — don’t get rattled, as that could leave you open for longer, hence turning the tide in your opponent’s favor.
7. Two-Handed Or One-Handed Weapons – Which One To Use?
Knights Fight 2 comes with a variety of swords, axes, maces, and other weapons that your character can wield during any given fight. Some of these weapons are wielded with one hand, while others would require two hands, and you will notice that in the Equipment screen, there are separate sub-menus where you can choose a one-handed weapon (third from the top on the left side) or a two-handed one (fourth from the top).
When it comes to choosing which type of weapon you will use, your mileage may vary. Some players are more comfortable with one-handed weapons, as they can hold a shield with the other hand for defensive — and offensive — purposes. (That’s right — shields can also double as weapons!)
However, there are other players who prefer using two-handed weapons — they don’t allow you as much leeway on defense as you have no choice but to use the weapons to block, but they deal much more damage due to the fact that they’re bigger than those that only require one hand to use.
We would recommend hanging on to at least one weapon in both categories, and to make use of both weapons in both Duel and Campaign modes, in order to get the most out of both worlds.
