App introduction

I started developing this app in mid-2010. I originally developed it just to enjoy the fun of writing programs. By default, it was just me. I wanted to see weather information on my mobile phone. Later, as the number of users increased, I started to encounter data usage. issues, and then initiated private initiatives to promote the Open Data policy. Because of this, I got to know many experts in weather, earthquakes, climate, and disaster prevention and relief.

At the end of 2014, we began to cooperate with the Meteorological Bureau, and the "Earthquake Early Warning" (EEW) function was built into the App, which can be used to detect earthquake waves before they arrive. Information and communication technology transmits earthquake warnings to users' mobile phones. When the mobile phone receives the alarm, it will remind the user, hoping to provide more time for earthquake response.

Personal experience record of the Meinong earthquake

In the early morning of 2016/02/06, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in Meinong, Kaohsiung. Later I learned that the "KNY Taiwan Weather" App played a lot of roles. Many users were awakened by the alarm at around 03:57:50 in the morning. Including me too.

In the middle of the country where I was, I heard the voice announcement of level 3 and thought it was okay, so I waited in the bedroom for the earthquake wave to arrive. Unexpectedly, after the earthquake wave arrived, it shook for a long time. I got up in a hurry and picked up my phone to check. It was close to level 4. Aftershocks continued, but the terminal system I built still held up and continued to send alerts.

My experience this time was that after being awakened by the alarm first, I knew the estimated intensity of the local earthquake and how long it would take for the shock wave to arrive. I was mentally prepared and less afraid.

However, we should also re-examine our own earthquake disaster prevention procedures and advance preparations afterwards, and do not ignore local earthquakes with only minor magnitudes and fail to respond to disaster prevention at all, because errors or errors may occur in technology.

During this review process, I also found that we need a kind of information: "the exact earthquake resistance level of the building" because I want to know the earthquake resistance level of my home, company, and public building.

Now, there are systems that can let people know the estimated magnitude of earthquakes and can also calculate the arrival time of seismic waves. However, the earthquake resistance of buildings is also one of the factors that determine how to respond, and even strengthen or rebuild in advance. The National Earthquake Engineering Center provides a " Street House Earthquake Resistance Information Network " that can be used to easily calculate the seismic safety level.
