Vision
Welcome to the Public Bible Reading app! This initiative revitalizes the practice of reading and listening to Scriptures within a community setting.
Engaging in communal Bible reading was essential to the lives of God's people throughout the Old and New Testaments. Public readings of the Scriptures served as acts of remembrance and identity formation. This practice is woven throughout the Bible, from the time of Moses reading the Law to the reforms of King Josiah and the renewal brought about by leaders like Ezra in Israel.
In Jesus' day, publicly reading the Law and the Prophets in synagogues was central to Jewish life. Early Christians continued this tradition, often reading the apostle Paul's letters aloud at their gatherings. This practice mattered greatly to Paul, who instructed in 1 Timothy 4:13, "...devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and teaching" (NIV).
The Word is the nourishment for God's people. Coming together regularly to read and listen makes knowing and loving God’s Word as straightforward as enjoying a good meal. Today, you can share this tradition with your community.
May your community thrive in its knowledge and love of God and be equipped to engage in His work! Thank you for being part of this movement!
Practical Tips
For in-person meetings, it’s helpful to have printed Bibles available for participants who may not have access on their mobile devices.
You can select reading plans of 20, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, depending on what suits your group best. Remember that the entire Bible takes approximately 100 hours to read aloud.
Each reading session begins and concludes with a Psalm, serving as an opening and closing prayer. Each session also includes one reading from the Old Testament and one reading from the New Testament.
We recommend taking short breaks (for 1 to 3 minutes maximum) following the passages from both the Old and New Testaments to allow participants time for prayerful reflection on what they’ve heard.
You will also find videos from The Bible Project at the beginning of each session. These videos are optional and provide useful context, such as narrative structure, themes, and historical background for each book. They are engaging and accessible, helping to enhance the group's understanding of the selected passages.
Discussing the Bible passages after the reading is entirely optional, but we encourage it to be a time simply to share favorite moments from the reading; this shouldn’t serve as a time for preaching or teaching, but rather a moment to listen together to the Word of God. Finally, be sure to encourage your group members to join the next session.

Why Read and Listen to the Bible?
The Bible, God’s Word, is spiritual food. God uses His Word to equip His people to do His will.
Deuteronomy 8:3 (NKJV)
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
(Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 4:4)
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
