How to Play
1. Getting Ready
Getting ready for the game is easy.
Each player shuffles their deck, places it face down on the table, and then draws a starting "hand" of seven cards from the "deck." If a player is not happy with their starting hand, they can choose to "re-draw."
Choose how you want to track life, then decide which player goes first. The player who goes first skips the first draw step. Don't forget to track life totals—you can win the game by reducing your opponent's life total to 0!
2. Casting Spells
When you play a card, you cast it.
To cast a spell, you pay "mana" according to the symbol in its upper right corner. The number represents "generic mana."
You can "tap" a land to generate mana. A land produces mana of the corresponding color as written on it. Land cards are not spells. You can play a land card each turn at no cost.
"Permanent" spells such as creatures, artifacts, and enchantments stay on the "battlefield" after they are cast.
Instants and sorceries resolve their effects after they are cast, and then go to the "graveyard".
3. Play a turn
Each turn is divided into five phases.
Preparation phase: "Untap" your cards, resolve "upkeep" effects, and "draw cards".
First action phase: You can play a land card and cast spells from your hand that you can afford.
Combat phase: The phase in which you "attack" your opponent. Section 4 explains how the combat phase works.
Second action phase: Same as the first action phase. If you played a land card in the first action phase, you can't play it now.
End phase: Remove all damage from creatures still on the battlefield. Resolve all "end of turn" effects, then pass the turn to your opponent.
4. Combat
The combat phase is divided into multiple steps, always performed in the same order.
Declare attackers: Choose the creatures you want to attack your opponent with. Tap them.
Declare blockers: The defending player chooses any number of untapped creatures they control to "block" the attacking creature.
Calculate damage: The attacker and blockers deal "damage" to each other, and unblocked creatures deal damage to the defending player. A creature dies and is put into a graveyard when it takes damage equal to or greater than its "toughness".
