New to Meetup: the Event Check-In Feature for Organizers

The basics of Event Check-In

When members register for your event, they will be automatically added to the Attending list. Using this list, you’ll be able to quickly and effectively mark who has arrived, know exactly how many remaining guests you’re expecting, and be able to easily monitor no-shows.

Event Check-In is built with a mobile-friendly interface so you can use it on-the-go, and so that your screen time can be limited while you’re enjoying the event. To check in a guest, all you have to do is swipe their attendee card right to check them in, or swipe left to mark them as absent. For smaller gatherings, you can also do a bulk check-in to mark everyone present at once.

Meetup

Event Check-In is easily accessed via the event info section within the Meetup for Organizers app. You can start checking in attendees an hour before the event starts, and up to 24 hours after the event has ended. After that, you can always go to the Attending list for the event and update attendance there. In a future update, the Event Check-In feature will become available to all event hosts, even if they are not one of the Meetup group’s organizers.

How Event Check-In is changing the game

The benefits of a quick and simple check-in process are going to make event-hosting an even more enjoyable, rewarding, and efficient experience. By taking advantage of this new offering, you can:

Plan ahead for teams or smaller breakout groups — Some Meetup events, like pickup soccer in the park or an urban scavenger hunt, require the group to be temporarily split up. Knowing your exact number of attendees is crucial for this type of event. Event Check-In makes that responsibility so much easier.

Store event attendance info within the app — As an organizer, it can be extremely useful to reference past event attendance sheets as a way of learning more about what members of your group like to do. With Event-Check In, all of that info will be categorized and accessed for you to review. You can add a no-show flag to attendees who RSVPed “yes” but never came. And you can even distinguish between no-shows and absences (people who RSVPed yes, but let you know beforehand that they would no longer be able to make it).

Avoid guest stress — Event Check-In allows you to see which guests are planning to bring a guest, and how many guests each of them are going to bring. This way, you won’t be caught off guard by a suddenly bigger-than-you-expected event.

View profile info about your attendees — Preparation is an organizer’s best friend. Through Event Check-In, you can access some simple but helpful data about your event attendees before they arrive. For example, you can track whether they have paid the event fee (when applicable) or see if a certain attendee is joining one of your group’s events for the first time. Plus, you can view every attendee’s name and profile photo, which makes the social aspect of hosting stress-free.

See a real-time progress bar — This feature automatically, and in a visually pleasing way, tracks how many attendees you’ve checked in and marked absent to your event. Located at the bottom of the Event Check-In tool within the app, the progress bar is great for a quick glance while you’re still in the action of hosting.

Track no-shows — The no-show feature in Event Check-In allows you to distinguish between attendees who did not attend the event (absences) and no-shows, a special flag that lets you mark who RSVPed as attending, but didn’t provide an indication that they wouldn’t come. A no-show flag is an optional tool for organizers who want to keep track of group members who have inconsistent attendance. Some groups even have a policy of being removed from the group after three no-shows.

I've been using Meetup for a while now, both as an organizer and member. Recently, I've noticed that the app and desktop version are not up to date. Unlike before, members can't suggest meetups anymore. Also, the app doesn't offer all the features available on the desktop version. It's quite annoying that pictures have to be a specific size, resulting in many event images being cut off. While I appreciate the idea behind Meetup, they really need to update their technology and make the platform more user-friendly.

Oh, cool! So, I just moved to Florida not too long ago, and since I'm a stay at home mom, I've been loving hanging out with other stay-at-home moms. We've been having a blast doing things together and swapping stories about our kids. I can't wait to explore more groups and form connections with people who share similar interests. Plus, the app makes everything so simple to navigate. Can't wait to see what's in store!

Looks like the app is causing some frustrations after the latest update. It's still taking forever to start, and there are times when it shows a blank page with an error saying the page doesn't exist. It seems like the developers are focusing more on ads rather than improving the app experience. Some clubs have started using emails or websites more to keep members updated about events and signups. This app used to be good, but with each update, it just seems to be getting worse. Clearing the cache by removing 295mb helped make the app run better, but it's still pretty slow.

I enjoy going to meetups and I use the app quite a bit. It's been a bit frustrating though, because the app takes forever to load pages. Lately, I've also had trouble with the event chat feature. Even though I can see others posting messages, whenever I try to open the chat, all I get is a blank screen. I recently got a new phone and thought the app would finally work smoothly, but then this problem with the event chat started happening.

So, here's the deal: both the Android and Desktop apps are full of bugs. I keep getting stuck in this never-ending loop whenever I try to change my RSVP. And guess what? There's no option to delete a direct message. Plus, the photo uploader is such a pain - it just won't work properly! And don't get me started on those annoying ads that keep popping up all the time. It's beyond irritating! And when you need help from tech support, good luck with that - they're pretty much MIA, and even if you manage to contact them, it's a long and tedious process. I had plans to start a meetup group, but with such poor tech support and all the glitches in the apps, there's no way I'm going through with it.

Yeah, I've noticed some really good improvements lately. But there are still a few features missing on the app that you can find on Meetup's website. It's like those little things can make a big difference, you know? Like when you accept someone into a group using the app, you immediately get an email confirmation, unlike on the website where you have the choice to skip that step. The chat system is a bit confusing on the app compared to the website where it works smoother. And let's not forget about that annoying character limit in posts, right?

So, like, this app is super buggy, man. The concept is cool and all, but it's just so annoyingly glitchy. What's up with that? Also, when I was setting up my profile, the app asked me about my interests, right? But then apparently forgot to actually show them on my profile where it says "your interests." So weird, huh? And when I tried adding them manually all over again, sometimes they just wouldn't pop up, even though I'd already entered them during the profile setup. I even had this moment where the screen went all black out of nowhere. Like, what in the world? Anyways, I'm thinking of giving the Beta program a shot, maybe they've got something to fix this mess.

Well, the app definitely needs some upgrades because it seems to have some issues that users can't fix on their own. For example, it shows events as free when there's actually a fee, or it lists an event for today when it's actually happening on Sunday. Moreover, it sometimes displays the same event happening at both AM and PM on the same day. It can be frustrating when these errors occur, especially since providing screenshots doesn't seem to lead to any improvements. It's like how Uber and Airbnb were great at the beginning but lost some of their quality and personal touch as they grew too big.

So, I've been using this app to try and meet new people and make friends, which is a fantastic concept, right? But boy, let me tell you, navigating through it has been quite a struggle. It's super slow and full of bugs. There's no calendar function to easily see events, and when you click on a meetup group, it takes forever to load – like, more than 10 seconds! And that's not all, sometimes messages don't show up correctly, the timestamps are all messed up, and notifications just don't work like they're supposed to. Honestly, trying to organize anything using this app has been a real headache. It's pretty disappointing that an app in 2024 would still have these kinds of issues, you know?

So, I've been having some frustrating issues with this app lately. You know when you click on the waitlist icon but the latest names don't show up? Yeah, that's been happening to me. I tried reaching out to the app developers multiple times, but they haven't responded at all. It feels like they're not really bothered about their users. I even sent them a screenshot of the problem, but I didn't hear anything back. It's seriously ridiculous! On top of that, the app is so finicky. The most recent problem now is that it doesn't update RSVPs immediately when changes are made. And don't get me started on the notifications - they either come in way later than they should or sometimes not at all. It's getting pretty annoying, to be honest.
