Tips for Using Excel for Android

Type Text with Ease

Microsoft Excel

Entering text in a spreadsheet cell is a bit different in Excel for Android. Those familiar keystrokes you use in Excel on your desktop will need a bit of an adjustment when you make the switch to your mobile device.

Here are a few typing tips:

Type text: Double tap a cell, type your text, then tap the green check mark. After you’re done typing, tap Enter to move to the cell below.

Delete text in a cell: Tap a cell and hold to display a context menu, then tap Clear.

Edit text in a cell: Double tap the cell containing the text to display the blue cursor. Tap and drag the cursor where you want it and make your changes.

If you use an external keyboard with the app, Excel keyboard shortcuts will work on your Android device.

Type Multiple Lines of Text in a Cell

Microsoft Excel

It's possible to create multiple lines or paragraphs inside a cell, but, unlike Excel on your desktop, you’ll have a few more keys to press.

To create multiple paragraphs in a cell:

1. Double tap a cell and begin typing.

2. Tap the cell to display the blue cursor.

3. Tap the cursor, then tap New line.

4. Continue typing.

5. Tap the green check mark when you’re done.

There are many ways to move around in Excel for Android. Learn the touch gestures for Excel for Android to take full advantage of the app.

Add Numbers Quickly

Microsoft Excel

When you want to add a row or column of numbers, use AutoSum to get the job done quickly.

To add numbers, tap and drag to select the cells in the row or column you want to add together. Then, tap Formulas AutoSum Sum to display the total at the end of the row or column.

If you’re having problems selecting a large section of data, tap Home Select Range and type the range of cells you want.

I really like this spreadsheet app! I've been using it on my Android Samsung Galaxy Note phones for over ten years. I also have it on my Nexus 7 tablet and on different laptops. I save my files on Onedrive so I can access them easily from all my devices.

MS Excel is the top choice for spreadsheets. I prefer starting a file on my computer with the full Microsoft 365 version. Then, I make edits on my phone using Excel for Android. The app is user-friendly and offers great features. Microsoft frequently updates it, enhancing its performance. I suggest trying it out.

Using Excel on my laptop has been hard because I can't access the formulas to change cells. Even after getting a new computer and seeking help, I could only make a few corrections. However, when I opened the same spreadsheet on my cell phone today, everything looked clear! I was finally able to make the changes I had been struggling with for weeks. It would be great if Excel on my computer was as easy to use as it is on my phone.

I really like using Excel for staying organized. I can create Macros for repetitive tasks, which is super convenient. It offers more functions and features than any other spreadsheet program I've tried. That's why I'm willing to pay for the whole suite. Excel can be used for a variety of things, from handling schedules and finances to playing tabletop games or anything else you can think of.

There's a flaw in data input. The numeric keypad is great, but it switches back to qwerty every time I enter something. It would be nice if it stayed on the numeric keypad until I decided to switch it. Microsoft did a good job with this. The new numeric keypad is even better than I expected. It's excellent in every way. The automatic recognition of whether I'm entering numbers or letters is really helpful. Great job!

The version of Excel I'm using now is way better than the one I learned on in college. It's definitely better than Google Sheets. Spreadsheets have had a huge impact and can be incredibly useful and powerful when used right.

The predictive text on my keyboard hasn't been adding suggestions when I type lately. I click on the suggestion but it doesn't move up into the text. I have to wait until the spelling error is underlined and then use Excel's suggested correction. I hope this isn't intentional, just like how you replaced the cut, copy, and paste menu on my Android with your own version. Additionally, I've never been able to save new files with capital letters or symbols.

Chart utility works well. Was concerned about old xls files, but it handles them fine. Now, it works perfectly, but constantly pushes saving to OneDrive. Need to be cautious when saving files. Avoid auto-save. The experience is consistent across all devices and Office programs. Apart from that, it's excellent and subscription-worthy.

I have experience with Excel for many years. I also use other Microsoft Office tools and I really enjoy them all. The more you use these tools, the more you realize how powerful they are. Excel is great for simple spreadsheets and it also works well for more complicated ones with features like collaboration, pivot tables, VBA macros, and more. Of course, as you delve into advanced developer tools, it can get challenging, but the support groups are fantastic!
