Poldl and the show engine
Remembering the beginnings – with our story about "Mr. Pius," we already took a look back at the beginnings of roadside assistance ( more on that here ). This time, with Leopold Bichlbauer—known to many simply as "Poldl"—we'd like to bring a breakdown driver legend from the ÖAMTC Tirol to the fore.
Poldl, now 86 years old, is an institution in Tyrol. His career as a breakdown driver began in 1958 with the then Automobile and Touring Club Tyrol (ATT). With his love of cars, his craftsmanship, and his tireless enthusiasm for repairs, he has inspired generations – and he has lost none of that to this day.
Screw instead of throwing away
"Well, things were different back then," says Poldl, his eyes shining as he enters the modern testing facilities of the ÖAMTC base in Kematen. He recalls the humble beginnings of the ATT in Innsbruck's Kirschentalgasse: seven mechanics, two chairs – one for the then technical director and one for the members – and a clear motto: repair rather than replace. Broken things weren't simply discarded, but overhauled with skill and patience. What we now call "sustainable" or "refurbished" was then simply a necessity and a passion. The philosophy of repair and recycling runs like a thread through Poldl's life. And it also inspired him to undertake an extraordinary project: the construction of a display engine.

A lesson for generations
Poldl came up with the idea when he got his hands on a retired Mazda. The car was 20 years old, no longer roadworthy, and wouldn't have been worth repairing. But instead of simply writing it off, Poldl began systematically dismantling it. He spent a year working on a cross-section of the engine, reassembling the parts, and thus creating a fascinating exhibit that shows even non-mechanics how the components of a combustion engine work together. Poldl has now donated this unique piece to the ÖAMTC Tirol, where it serves as a display for interested parties and apprentices at the base in Kematen. One of them, Roland Vinazzer, was impressed: "Cool! I've heard a lot from Poldl."
