A Beginner's Guide to OPTC:
Part 1: I'm New, What Units Should I Roll For? -This tends to vary so I'm just going to give you some general advice, but feel free to ask around or check threads on this particular subject. Generally, you want to grab a few powerful legends to run as captains to smooth out your early game. There are other useful units to have, but legends are your primary source of strong captain abilities so this is what most new players tend to roll for. Bonus points if you manage to also get a strong EXP or drop duplicating captain as well.
Part 2: Now What? -The stock standard advice is to ignore everything and push story as far as you can for gems. You won’t be able to clear every single island right off the bat, but you’ll get far enough to build up a stockpile of gems. The standard advice is to then spend these gems on the next big sugo that has a 2x legend rate or better to try and fill out your box with useful legends and rare recruits to use as subs or alternative captains for content.
Part 3: So have I won the game now? -Now that you have built out your box (or are waiting for a good sugo to dump gems on) it is time to work on building your box with useful units. OPTC is a fairly f2p friendly game in that there are many strong units that are worth farming in the game. The only catch is this farm- worthy content is locked behind a rotation system, so not every unit worth farming is available all the time. As such, it is important to learn to sort the content into their respective tiers, and know which content you should be prioritizing farming over others.
What do I mean by farming content?: -Different units are uniquely helpful vs different enemy debuffs/buffs, and as such you want to build your box with a wide number of useful units. In order to maximize these units, you will want to:
Max Skill your units. This is done by either feeding copies of the units, or their skillbooks from fortnights, or universal skillbooks (typically from events, garp challenge rewards, and Treasure Map rewards) to level up their skill (on global, be sure to wait for a skillup event). You will typically want 3 copies of a unit per level of skill you need to raise during a 2x skillup rate, as the probability of getting a skillup during this is around 1 in 3. (different units will require different amounts of skillup levels) Some of the universal skillbooks, however, are guaranteed skillups.
Max Socket your units. On global, be sure to farm your daily forgotten tome island, as these are an easy way to give your units sockets. You can also get sockets by feeding them copies of the same unit type (ie feeding any luffy unit to a luffy) You will sometimes get extra socket slots when you Limit Break, so be sure to wait to feed tomes to a unit if you know you’ll be limit breaking it later!!
Max Limit Break your units. You will need limit break materials that you farm from Treasure Map to do this. You’ll also need to rais e their limit break points with either potions or by having the unit beat bosses in Treasure Map.
Cotton Candy. At first, you’ll have a fairly limited supply of cotton candy. Be sure to cotton candy your strong captain (legends) first, and then strong subs such as the Treasure Map units. By the time you finish those units, you’ll have a better idea what other units you’ll want Cotton Candy on, but feel free to ask the community if you are unsure what units should have what Cotton Candies.
Priority 1: Daily/gem islands -These islands typically have very low stamina cost, award a gem for clearing them, and give minor items such as cotton candy, forgotten tomes, or limit break potions. These are quick and you only need to run them once, so be sure to do these first thing when you are playing the game.
Priority 2: Treasure Map -Treasure Map is the primary source of limit break materials in the game. Kizuna eventually has some, and occasionally they’ll show up from daily log in rewards, but the vast majority of these materials come from here. You need limit break materials for all the good units in the game, though many units are still usable without limit breaking them. Treasure Map is also the source for some of the most powerful units in the game. These units cannot be obtained any other way, so be sure to farm the Treasure Map for the blue tickets to buy the units you have missed, and farm to at least 1 million points to max the current unit up for grabs from the point rewards. As you need to be farming limit break materials anyway, the Treasure Map is always worth farming. The Treasure Map event is only around for 4-5 days a month on average, so be sure to farm it when it is available.
Priority 3: Kizuna -Kizuna units typically don’t come back if you miss them (so far) so be sure to farm them when you have the chance. The tickets/coin spent in the lower difficulties isnt that much worse than the higher, so feel free to clear any difficulty you are able. The biggest difference between them is how long it takes to spend all your coins accumulated from your daily stamina. This mode is also a good source of EXP fodder, such as lobsters, as well as rewarding other beneficial items such as tablets and manuals in the final box of rewards. There are also usually a few gacha pulls as rewards in some of the boxes, so be sure to not reset a box if you haven't gotten all the rewards you want from that box.
Priority 4: Colo/Raids/Ambush -Colo and Raid units are usually quite good, but require many copies for skill ups. Make sure you are able to clear at least the second highest difficulty level if you are trying to max the unit, as the lowest difficulty levels tend to have lower drop rates for the unit. The highest difficulty level, however, will guarantee the unit drops. These units are fairly cheap to limit break, so be sure to do so once your supply from Treasure Map gets pretty healthy. This content is a higher priority if there is an Ambush event on the map, as then you are able to farm 2 powerful units at the same time. Ambush fights can be very difficulty, however, so you may not be able to farm these until you have built up your box.
Priority 4/5: Fortnights -If the fortnight has a skillbook for a Legend/Rare Recruit you pulled from the Gacha, it is worth farming. The fortnight units themselves, however, are pretty weak and will rarely be used. You’ll want a copy of them for when they are boosted on Treasure Map, but it is very rare that a fortnight unit is important for clearing the harder content in the game.
Other: Garp Challenges/Forests -Garp Challenges and Forests cost 0 stamina, so farm these when you don’t feel like burning gems on stamina refills and you have run out of stamina. Their rewards can be quite good.
Other: Skull Islands (Priority 1) -Occasionally islands that drop skulls for super evolving legends come out. If you can, farm these for 5 copies of the skulls as the islands, when they return, will only be available as an unlockable island that costs gems to temporarily unlock. Save yourself some gems later by farming them when they are free.
