How to use Huawei Petal Maps for walking directions

1. Search for your destination

Petal Maps

First, open the Petal Maps app on your phone and type your destination into the search box.

Click the blue ‘Directions’ button at the bottom of the screen to start and ensure you’re following the walking directions by using the toggle bar underneath the destination.

Top tip: Find the nearest amenities such as hotels, restaurants, and petrol stations by selecting the icons below the search box. Choose from the options at the bottom of the screen.

2. Select your preferred route

Petal Maps

Take a look at the available routes, highlighted in blue on the map.

You can select an alternative by pressing it on the screen until small white arrows appear on the blue line. Once you’re happy with your choice, press ‘Start’.

3. Start your journey

Petal Maps

Your phone will alert you via the built-in speaker (or connected headphones) that the navigation instructions have started, and the directions should automatically appear on your watch screen.

You can now safely pop your phone into your pocket or bag. As you follow the route, new directions will appear on your watch screen.

4. Finish your journey

Petal Maps

When you’re ready to stop the instructions, swipe back on the screen twice to end the directions. Or, exit the Petal Maps app on your smartwatch by pressing the crown.

Top tip: Before exiting the directions, see how many calories you’ve burnt during the walk in the top left corner of the screen.

In general, this app is awesome. It really knows the routes well and provides clear voice instructions. The only problem I faced was it kept losing signal and trying to reconnect. Occasionally, it gives inaccurate directions and struggles to get you back on course. Moreover, there are many areas where the user experience could be enhanced. The interface isn't user-friendly, making it a bit of a challenge to input starting and destination addresses.

So, I recently tested out 5 navigation apps, you know, the big ones that everyone talks about. And turns out, Petal maps totally stole the show! I mean, it's got everything - super detailed, works like a charm, and looks really cool too. Only bummer is that I wish it could be used with Android Auto.

Since I'm a big fan of Huawei and use their products, it's only natural for me to opt for Petal Maps. Personally, I'm not very fond of Google Maps, so I usually go with TomTom Go as my go-to navigation app. Petal Maps has definitely made progress, and I believe they will introduce some impressive features down the line. It would be great to see points of interest included, but the one aspect holding me back from fully embracing the service is the poor quality of the American English voice. Living in the UK, I'd prefer voice instructions in proper British English.

So, I was out for a test drive, cruising along a 30km familiar route. When I hit the road, my battery was at 51%. About halfway through, the map decided to reroute me in the wrong direction. Of course, I didn't follow the new route suggested by the map. Then suddenly, without any warning, my phone just shut down. Well, so much for relying on Petal Maps!

That's great to hear! Living in Australia, I find this alternative to Google really useful for navigation. It's easy to find places and key landmarks, and the search predictions are spot on. There could be some enhancements in terms of location reviews and opening hours, but I believe it will improve as more people start using it. Kudos to Huawei and Tomtom for a job well done! Keep up the good work.

So, my old phone was given some unnecessary apps by a Huawei update that can't be deleted. I decided to give it a try out of curiosity. I selected the second route option but the navigation still insisted on taking me on its initial recommendation. The designers thought it would be smart to use green color for the navigation path, but since fields and countryside are also green, it just makes everything confusing, especially with the glare from the sun when driving - not very well-thought-out. The audio directions were also not clear and often cut off.
