Use PictureThis with Your Phone’s Camera

When you open the app, you might get a prompt to subscribe pretty much every time. You can tap the X or the Cancel button in the top-right corner to close this window. Select the green camera button at the bottom of the screen to identify a plant. A preview from your smartphone’s rear camera will appear.

It’s best to take a moment and frame the photo correctly and tap the preview of the plant to make sure you get a sharp enough focus. When you’re ready, tap the shutter to quickly put the PictureThis plant recognition AI to work finding a match.

PictureThis

There are toggle switches at the top-right to switch on your phone’s flash when a plant is too dark or to switch to the front-facing camera. Note that PictureThis identified my scruffy whiskered face as barbed durian fruit, an amusing option that might have more practical uses.

PictureThis Can Also Recognize Plants in Photos

You can also supply PictureThis with a photo from your library instead of using the camera. This can be quite handy for answering a question about an interesting plant that you happen upon in your photo gallery.

Just pop into PictureThis to search for matches of any photos on your smartphone. This is a great option for hikers who usually prefer to keep moving. You can quickly gather pictures of plants along the way to identify them later.

The process is much the same as using the camera in the PictureThis app. Tap the green camera button at the bottom of the screen. A preview from your smartphone’s rear camera will appear, but you can ignore this and choose the Photos button to the bottom left instead.

PictureThis

A gallery of photos from your phone will appear. Select the plant you’re interested in. Pinch to zoom in and drag to center the plant if necessary. Tap the green check mark button to search for a match.

So, there's this app that can tell you the names of plants. I've spent a lot of time helping it learn and now the developer wants us to pay a crazy amount every month just to use it. I think $10 for a one-time purchase would be fair, but I refuse to pay a monthly fee after all the help I've given. I gave it one star and noticed that my previous review had mysteriously disappeared, so here I am leaving it again.

The app is free. Whenever a popup appears for the premium version, just close it by clicking the x button. I didn't bother with the free trial as I'm not planning to spend any money. It's really accurate in identifying plants - I've managed to pinpoint all the "weeds" in my yard, which are actually mostly just mulberry tree sprouts that my landlord mistakes for weeds, haha. The ads can be a bit annoying, but remember there's always an x button to close them, so don't worry about paying unless you want to. :)

Got this app that keeps showing annoying pop-ups, and it couldn't even identify some plants correctly. I tried the free trial but there was no easy way to opt out of subscription. You have to figure out yourself how to close the screen. This app is terrible, trying to deceive people into subscribing. It's really sneaky and doesn't even work properly. Just awful.

You know, I just love so many things about this app! It's fantastic at identifying any plant and providing helpful care advice. Plus, it can assist with sick plants and reminds you when to water or fertilize. However, my one issue is that even though I've allowed all notifications, sometimes it doesn't send reminders to water on time. I end up receiving them only after I open the app, which kind of defeats the purpose since I don't do that very frequently.

An app was made really well and I found it super handy. They give you a 7-day free trial after you put in your credit card info. However, I couldn't find any way to cancel the $22 monthly subscription even after looking everywhere in the app. If there was a cancel option, it would be an amazing app. But now, it feels like a scam to me.

I lost my phone and couldn't transfer my subscription to my new phone. I thought it expired, so I got a new one for £28.99. Just got a message from Google Play saying it will auto-renew for £19.99 next month. Can't find a way to cancel either subscription. I enjoy the app but reconsidering due to the price hike. Won't renew now for sure.

I enjoy using this app because I can still access the identification features without paying. I appreciate that there are options available for users who don't want to pay. It's user-friendly, but it took me some time to figure out that there are multiple identifications for each plant, and I need to swipe to find the correct match. Remember to check that the plant is undamaged before identifying it to ensure an accurate result.

I thought this app would be really good, but it's just like the rest with an expensive fee. I tried it for a week with different plants. Picture This made too many mistakes for me as a horticulturist. For instance, it kept mixing up plants with alternate leaves and those with opposite leaves. I do appreciate how it organizes results and gives plant details though.

This app has potential, but it needs updates. It's accurate about 75% of the time. Sometimes the plants are mislabeled in the photos, and when I try to correct them, the right option isn't there, so I end up selecting the wrong one. It's frustrating. I wish there was a way to provide feedback or fix the names. I paid for the annual subscription, so I hope the identification improves.
