How to Play Pinball

Co-authored by Hunter Rising

Last Updated: April 15, 2024

Pinball is a classic arcade game that is a lot of fun, but takes a lot of skill to master. If you want to be a pinball wizard, you have to learn how the machine functions first in order to control the ball. Once you understand the machine, you’ll be able to master it and get your name on the high score board. Just make sure you bring enough quarters with you!

Part1 Learning the Machine (in Real for further Skills)

Pinball Flipper Classic Space

Step 1

Read the instructions on the front panel. Every pinball machine has a different way to rack up points. Find the instructions cars near in the front left of the machine and read over how to get bonuses and accumulate points while you play.[1]

Compare any symbols on the instruction card to the symbols inside the machine. Make sure you understand what each instruction is referencing.

Step 2

Study the layout of the machine. Pinball machines have a busy interior that may seem overwhelming at first, but many machines have similar structures. Pay attention to where the components are that will earn you points and will move the ball.

Step 3

Pull the plunger to release the ball. The plunger is the handle at the front of the machine that you pull and release to shoot the ball into the machine. Use it whenever you start your pinball game or when you lose the ball.

Step 4

Use the flippers to hit and shoot the ball. The flippers are the paddles at the bottom of the machine that you use to hit the ball. The buttons for the flippers are typically found on the left and right sides of the machine.

Check to see if you only have 2 flippers, or if there are additional flippers near the top of the machine.

Step 5

Use the bumpers to get points and bounce the ball. Bumpers are found throughout the entire machine and will bounce the ball away. Common places for bumpers are at the top of the machine and just above the bottom flippers.

Step 6

Watch the display on top to see what to aim for next. The display will display goals and your current score. Check the display often when you have control of the ball so you know the next goal for your machine.[2]

Some pinball machines will tell a story the longer you play them. Tune into the screen so you don’t miss anything.

Make sure you have control of the ball when you check the screen. You don’t want to lose a ball because you looked away.

Listen to sound cues as well. Many times a voice will tell you what you should shoot at next.

Part2 Controlling the Ball (Applicable for Mobile Game)

Pinball Flipper Classic Space

Step 1

Only use one flipper at a time. When you try to use both flippers, you’re more likely to miss the ball. Instead, look at the direction the ball is coming and only use the closest flipper. If the ball is on the left use the left flipper, and use the right flipper if the ball is falling down the right.[3]

Use both flippers only if the ball is falling directly down the middle. Nudge the machine slightly to move the ball into safety.

Anticipate the ball’s movements instead of reacting to it. Reacting to the ball will only make you have less control.

Step 2

Rest the ball on the flippers to slow the ball down. When the ball comes down, activate the nearest flipper and let the ball rest in the pocket made by the path and flipper. When you’re ready to shoot the ball, let the flipper fall so the ball rolls.[4]

Activate the flippers slowly so you don’t accidentally hit the ball back up into the machine.

If you’re able to slow down and think about your next move, you’ll be able to make your balls last longer and get a higher score.

Step 3

Learn where the ball goes with different parts of the flipper. After you’ve stopped the ball, try hitting it on different places with the flipper. For example, let the ball get closer to the end of the flipper before activating it to hit the opposite side of the machine. This is known as a forehand hit.[5]

Each pinball machine will play differently, even if they’re the same game. Take the first ball of each game to learn the machine and how it shoots.

Step 4

Practice backhand shots by hitting the ball near the top of the flipper. Rather than letting the ball roll down the flipper, hit it immediately to aim for a spot on the same side of the machine as the flipper. Practice hitting the ball a few times to see where the ball goes when you shoot it.[6]

For example, if you’re using the right flipper, hitting the ball near the top of the flipper will make it go right.

Playing this game is really enjoyable! It's totally worth downloading because there are around 6-7 different boards you can play on. Some boards are faster than others, but all of them are pretty fun. Just make sure you have enough available RAM to experience all the effects without any lag.

I love playing games, especially pinball. Your app is fantastic and way better than others I've used before. Please continue the great work!

There used to be 2 more balls that entered randomly, but seems like they fixed that bug on one table. It's still very enjoyable though! Tried other Pinball games, but this one is the closest to the games I played at bars! Thanks!

The game has improved a lot after the update. Thanks! It's a really fun pinball game with nice graphics, easy controls, and a good variety of tables. The only problem is the 2018 table which could use an update. Just my two cents.

The main menu screen always has an ad on it, like seriously? And even that's just another ad. It's ridiculous how many ads there are! This app is trash with too many ads. It's just a simple pinball game, why all the ads, man? I'm not here to mine Bitcoin!

Sometimes, the powerups don't work properly. When I make a new high score, I see the top 10 list but my latest score isn't highlighted, so I can't tell how well my last game went. It would be cool to have a game mode where I can personalize the table by adding or removing platforms and flippers, and adjusting the number of powerups. It'd also be nice to change the background and ball color. I usually spend time playing on the breakout table.

The game doesn't sync the flippers, so it lags and offers no help if the ball goes straight to the exit behind them. It's not easy or great. Download a classic pinball game instead; it has fewer graphics, but the flippers move in sync with your taps and has classic pinball board setups.

You enjoy playing the game. But, you don't like that you have to use Google Play now. If this continues, you'll stop playing because your phone doesn't have enough storage. Your ball keeps getting stuck on the table. Besides that, you really like the game.

I'm really enjoying this game again now that they've fixed the freezing issue with a recent update. There are plenty of tables to choose from, the graphics are fantastic, and best of all, it's all free!

Playing pinball on my phone is enjoyable, but after about 10 minutes, my index fingers start to fall asleep and my thumb knuckles ache. Maybe I have big hands or maybe I'm just getting old. It could also be that pinball isn't meant to be played on such a small screen. Still, it's fun for a short burst!
