FAQ

Does it work? What will I be able to do?

Yes, but with one small catch. You have to put in the work.

You'll get help from our tried-and-true Dynamic Immersion® technology and a suite of tools designed to get you off the app and thriving in real life. The rest is up to you.

I leave for my trip in two weeks. Is it too late to start using Rosetta Stone?

Not at all! In general, a slow and steady approach to learning beats cramming, but the most important thing is to start.

Here's what we recommend:

First, check out Phrasebook, available with our most popular languages. Use it to access essential phrases and words and get instant feedback on your accent. We know you'll nail it!

Next, download a few units, so you can knock them out on the plane. Scared of disturbing a sleeping seatmate? You can temporarily turn off the speaking component.

Trying the language out in the real world is just as important as trying it out on the app. So be bold! Make friends. Ask to jump in.

Finally, have fun!

How much will I need to know in advance? Is there a placement test?

Join at any level. The first time you open the app, you'll get a chance to choose a plan based on your experience and what you hope to get out of learning.

What comes with my subscription?

In addition to useful content and an immersive experience, you'll also get a suite of tools developed to help you succeed in the real world.

It may take a bit to get used to the menus and some of the exercises might be unclear at first. But after two or three days, you'll be all set. You can choose your sessions depending on how much time you have. The speech recognition feature is quite forgiving, but if you can't realize you're saying something wrong, having a computer correct you won't really make a difference, right? So, it doesn't matter much. I've only been using it for three days, but so far, I'm enjoying it.

It's been 3 years and the UI still hasn't been fixed. It's awkward, buggy, and makes things hard. The play buttons are too small to touch most of the time. You have to hold your phone sideways, which seems more suited for tablets. I've reached out to support and left feedback many times, but no one seems to care.

I like using Rosetta Stone to learn. It's challenging, but makes sense. I feel like I'm improving. My only issue is the pronunciation part. Sometimes, it doesn't recognize what I say correctly, even if I say the same thing multiple times.

You know what, I reached out to Rosetta many times this year. The thing is, the Speech feature in the app just isn't working right. It either jumps over that part or doesn't even record. I did go into the settings and those are all good. I even toggled the Speech feature on and off a few times. To make matters worse, I uninstalled and reinstalled the app multiple times hoping for a fix. I explained all of this to customer service, they then asked for a screenshot. But really, how do you even screenshot something related to speech?

The app is really good for learning, but you need to pay $15 per month if you don't choose the yearly plan. I realize it costs money to make the app, but the price is too high for me. The free version has only basic features, which are well made. I gave it 3 stars because even though it's a great app, the cost is too much.

Having material tailored to your needs and preferences is wonderful. I've been learning German sporadically for some time and can remember most of the vocabulary, which makes me really satisfied. Sometimes, it would be helpful to have a quick reference for unfamiliar words in the pictures instead of having to stop and search online.

There are so many defects with the app! If you turn off voice recognition, you can't move forward in lessons that need it. The pictures are too small and there’s a lot of empty space on the screen. Text gets cut off in the middle of words. The tiny hint button makes you select the wrong answer. They're aware of these issues but don't do anything about them. All they care about is taking your money!

The app may be a little sensitive. When you press the play button to listen to the sentence again, if you aren't right on top of the blue button, it registers that as your answer. Also, when recording answers, wait a couple of seconds after the tone for the best results. Otherwise, it might miss the beginning of your answer and mark it as incorrect. Despite these quirks, it's a great and useful tool for learning languages on the move.

Impressed with Rosetta Stone for teaching a new language. It's challenging for both humans and software to do this, but this software does a great job. The exercises help improve listening and reading skills through repetition. I believe I'll learn more effectively using this compared to other software I've used before. The different accents in the exercises are helpful.
