FAQ

When are deposited funds available for trading?

Schwab Brokerage Accounts—Generally, electronic deposits and incoming wires to your Schwab brokerage account are available for same day trading. In some instances, however, incoming deposits may not be immediately used for certain securities and are subject to a holding period of up to five business days.

Schwab Bank Accounts—Generally, deposited cash and checks are available on the first business day after we receive your deposit. If you enrolled in our Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) service, your Schwab Bank deposits are subject to a four-business-day hold and you may not withdraw pending funds during the holding period.

What are stock settlement violations?

Stock settlement violations can occur when new trades are not properly covered by settled funds. Although settlement violations generally occur in cash accounts, they can also occur in margin accounts, particularly when trading non-marginable securities.

Has Schwab halted trading on any securities?

Neither Charles Schwab & Co. nor TD Ameritrade halted clients from buying any stocks, or selling any stocks they own, and neither firm restricted executing any basic options strategies. However, we've raised margin requirements on certain securities.

Can I use a recent deposit to trade?

Generally, clients may use a recent deposit to purchase marginable securities at Schwab. Please note that Schwab, like many firms, has exceptions to this rule. Please note the following:

Orders for marginable and non-marginable securities are generally allowed to place trades using a recent deposit.

Options and penny stock purchases require cleared cash prior to order entry. Cleared cash is defined as funds not subject to a hold.

MoneyLink deposits may take up to three business days to clear.

I want to talk about using options on this app. It's a bit of a hassle - you need to put in lots of information to set up your option order. Once you finish filling one field, the screen stops for a moment before moving onto the next one. This whole process takes around 1 minute and 30 seconds. After that, you hit review. Often, the app ends up losing all your entries and clearing the form, about 90% of the time. Occasionally, you can finally make a trade. Apart from this, the app is okay. Trading stocks is fine, as well as checking your account information and documents. I'd give it 2.5 stars.

Okay, there are three main issues causing frustration. Firstly, the app doesn't let you view both daily activities and overall progress together. You're constantly switching between screens to see the information and graph. Secondly, any sorting preferences you set aren't saved, so you have to reapply them each time you open the app. Lastly, whenever you buy or sell something, all your views across screens reset, forcing you to scroll back to where you were on both the position and progress screens after each trade.

Oh, I see you are not happy with the latest app update. You prefer the old version, which was fast and worked perfectly for you. The new update with its fancy new look is causing a lot of lag when you try to do anything in the app. Whether you are opening a stock, choosing an order type, entering an amount, or even just logging in, it's all slow and frustrating now. While the new design is nice to look at, it's just way too sluggish compared to how the app used to be. It's surprising that this update made it through quality control. Since time is crucial when it comes to trading, you are considering switching to another brokerage because you can't afford to deal with this kind of lag.

Ameritrade used to be way better than this. Now, the news is scarce, earnings calendar is missing, logging in is a nightmare, and I can't even take a screenshot anymore. The only thing I do like is the heat map. They got rid of the wrong app, I need to find a new company to invest with.

The recent update messed up the app. When I swipe down to refresh my portfolio, it gets stuck on loading. Then, when I want to see a stock's history, I have to go back and forth twice to get any results. Even after reinstalling, the problem persists. Fidelity is looking better than Schwab now. Schwab needs to improve. Also, the app lacks trailing stop loss, unlike Fidelity.

I am really frustrated with the update. The quotes don't update automatically anymore. The watchlist is hard to read because of its size. The big buttons make it difficult to see more stocks. Now with the heat map, it doesn't fit on one screen; I have to scroll which defeats its purpose. There aren't any new valuable updates. I wish they would bring back the old version.

I have to keep clicking to see the latest stock prices and charts on the app. When I open the app, nothing updates unless I hit refresh myself. The Schwab app doesn't offer anything new compared to the TD app. Even logging in online doesn't help. If I want real-time data, I have to refresh the page. I'm thinking of switching my account. It's not big anyway, I doubt Schwab will even notice I'm gone.
