How to Play Skat

In total, 32 cards are used for playing Skat. These cards include the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of each of the four suits as well as numbers 10 through 7 in those suits. In card decks that operate with the French suits, these four suits are the familiar clubs, spades, hearts, and diamonds. In German-suited decks, these four suits correspond to the suits of acorns, leaves, hearts, and bells.

Each player is dealt 10 cards to begin (totaling 30 cards) with the 2 remaining cards being placed face down to be used for the skat. The cards are dealt in a specific manner:

First, three cards go to each player.

Next, two cards are placed facedown in the center of the gameplay space to form the skat.

Following this, four cards are dealt to each player.

Finally, the remaining three cards are dealt to each player.

The players in the game have names for their roles in gameplay: the forehand (player to the dealer's left), middlehand (player to the forehand's left), and rearhand (player to the middlehand's left). The dealer in the game is first chosen at random and then the responsibility for dealing rotates clockwise.

Skat Card Values and Rankings

Within Skat, there are 120 card points available to players. The points are assigned to the cards as follows:

Aces: 11 points

Tens: 10 points

Kings: 4 points

Queens: 3 points

Jacks: 2 points

Nines, eights, and sevens: 0 poin
