Sky Map is a virtual planetarium designed for your Android device. Utilize it to recognize stars, planets, nebulae, and more. Originally created as Google Sky Map, it has now been contributed and made open source.

Troubleshooting/FAQ

The Map seems frozen or shows inaccurate locations: Confirm that you have not activated manual mode. Does your phone include a compass? If not, Sky Map cannot determine your orientation. Check compatibility here: http://www.gsmarena.com/

Attempt calibrating your compass by moving it in a figure-eight pattern or following instructions provided here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1EPbAapaeI.

Are there any magnets or metal objects nearby that could be disrupting the compass?

Try deactivating "magnetic correction" (in settings) to enhance accuracy.

Why doesn't autolocation function on my device? In Android 6, permissions operate differently. You must enable the location permission setting for Sky Map as indicated here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6270602?p=app_permissons_m

The Map displays jerky movements: If your phone lacks a gyroscope, some jitter may occur. Experiment with adjusting the sensor speed and damping (in settings).

Is an internet connection necessary? No, but certain features (such as manual location input) will not work without one. You can use GPS or manually enter latitude and longitude instead.

Can I participate in testing new features? Absolutely! Enroll in our beta testing program and access the latest version. https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.google.android.stardroid

Review

Can't view the sky without the gyroscope trying to guess what direction I'm looking. I need to be able to pan around the sky, I can't hold the phone up over my head. Please add missing function to remove the automatic direction view, I need to be able to pan around the sky when the phone can't be oriented in the random directions.

This app is amazing, but one recommendation would be when you find a constellation, the ability to click on its name to open a link to the background of it explaining why it was named what it was and what it's supposed to look like would be very informative.

Had a 5-star rating at first, but now it's all messed up. No horizon line, nothing's right. Can't even see the moon. Stars are off, calibrated it many times with no luck. Nothing shows correctly now. This app is terrible.

I've had this app for years. The interface is good, but recently it's been way off, like showing the moon in a completely different spot than where it actually is or saying the sun is up when it's still dark out. Even after fixing the time settings, it's still wrong. Something's definitely not right with the timing.

I tried this great app that shows the exact location of stars and planets. It doesn't display all the star names, though. I still give it 5 stars for being awesome. Special thanks to the developers.

I really want this app to get better and be more user-friendly. The time shown should be accurate for the timezone you're in, instead of UT. Adding colors to show the Ecliptic and Celestial Equator would make it easier to use. It would be great to include some astrology features too, such as customizable Lunar Mansion demarcations and zodiacal houses. That's everything I wish for right now.

The stars and the moon don't seem to be where they should be, kinda like 45 degrees off. I tried recalibrating the sensors a few times but it didn't fix the auto positioning mode. Maybe it's my phone's fault, although the GPS compass seems to be working fine.

Looking for things in the night sky? Try this small astronomy app. It's simple but good. I have a more advanced one on my computer, but this is great for my phone. It hasn't been updated for 2 years, but still worth trying.
