General Tips

If you've never played a Sonic game before, I'm sorry you're starting off on the worst note possible. As with most Sonic games, getting hit by an enemy made you lose all your rings, and only a maximum of 20 will be scattered around you for you to try to frantically pick up. Machine gun damage from enemy robots will make you drop only one ring, but that's not an issue whatsoever. Getting hit by even machine gun fire whilst not having any rings will result in losing a life, and losing all five lives will set you back to whenever you last saved. Since you'll get a prompt to save every time you finish a mission, losing all your lives is never really a big setback.

Completion Tips

When playing the story, perform as well as you can, of course, to get a good score so that you can get more rings and reduce any ring grinding that you might have to do later. Don't stress about S Rank-ing missions just yet, you'll have a lot of time for that after you beat a character's story.

For S Ranks, I suggest finishing one of the three stories and then completing everything that character has to do before moving on. That way you won't have to re-familiarize yourself with any controls later on. This will be the most frustrating part of the game, due to how glitches will just ruin things for you. Sometimes you'll be stopped in your tracks by something that isn't even there, sometimes an enemy will barely whiff you and you'll lose all your rings because of it, etc. Some glitches, although much less common than the harmful ones, are beneficial, and can massively reduce the difficulty in some parts of the game. Those will be noted when they're useful.

Silver medals can be a real pain too, but definitely shouldn't be as agonizing as some of the S Ranks. There are also a bunch scattered around Soleanna, with a different set of them for each of the three characters. It's always recommended to have the best of the possible upgrades for each character before going after these.
