Overall Guidance

Sound Amplifier: Amplify surrounding speech and on-device audio

You can use Sound Amplifier with wired or Bluetooth headphones to filter, augment, and amplify the sounds in your environment or on your Android device.

- Download & turn on Sound Amplifier

On your Android device, download Sound Amplifier from Google Play.

Connect headphones to your Android device.

    Go to the Apps section.

    Tap the Sound Amplifier app.

- Turn on Sound Amplifier on your Android device

Sound Amplifier is already installed on Pixel 3 and above and selected Android devices.

    Open your device's Settings app.

Tap Accessibility to Sound Amplifier to Open Sound Amplifier.

Connect wired or wireless headphones to your device.

Tips:

To add Sound Amplifier to your app list:

Go to Sound Amplifier to Settings.

Under "General," turn on Show icon in the app list.

To create a shortcut to Sound Amplifier:

        Tap Accessibility to Sound Amplifier.

        Turn on Sound Amplifier shortcut.

- Change Sound Amplifier settings

You can change the noise reduction and boost levels to fit your current environment.

On your device, open Sound Amplifier.

    Tap Phone mic.

    Adjust the settings:

Reduce unwanted sounds: To reduce noise in the background, drag on the “Noise reduction” slider. This setting only applies to the phone mic, not phone media.

Boost quiet sounds: To boost quiet sounds such as low speech sounds, drag the “Boost quiet sounds” slider to the right.

Boost low frequency, high frequency: To boost high frequency sounds like bird sounds, drag the slider to the right. To boost low frequency sounds like deep voices, drag the slider to the left.

Adjust ears separately: To apply sound and frequency settings to the left and right ears independently, tap Adjust ears separately. For Bluetooth headphones, this setting only applies to phone media, not to phone mic.

Important: With some Bluetooth headphones, sound might be delayed or lower quality. For improved sound quality, try a different set or switch to wired headphones.

Use Conversation mode on your Pixel phone

On Pixel 3 and later, you can use Conversation mode to amplify your conversation partner’s voice and block out other noises. This mode is most useful when you have a conversation in a noisy environment and you want to focus only on the speaker's voice.

    Open your device's Settings app.

    Tap Accessibility to Sound Amplifier.

Tap Open Sound Amplifier to Phone mic to Conversation mode.

Point your phone’s camera at your conversation partner.

    Tap Adjust sounds.

To change how much noise you block, turn on Noise reduction and use the slider.

To boost quiet sounds, turn on Boost and use the "Boost quiet sounds" slider.

To change frequency, turn on Boost and use the “Boost high or low frequencies” sliders.

Tips:

For best audio results, use noise-canceling wired headphones.

For clearer speech, move the “Noise reduction” slider to above 90%.

Tap Flip camera and have your conversation partner hold the phone.

To pause amplification, swipe the notification shade and tap Pause.

The microphone audio on my Bluetooth earbuds is really bad. Even when I turn up the volume all the way, it's almost impossible to hear. And there's a noticeable lag too. First, I hear the sound from outside, then a weak echo afterwards. It's much clearer if I just remove the earbud and listen directly. It seems like they've been trying to fix these problems since 2019, but I doubt it will ever work properly.

This app is great for noise cancellation, especially if you don't have earphones with that feature. I hope the creator can add a function to swap right and left channels for those like me with earphones that have them switched. It makes it hard to hear certain sounds in games.

It's like magic! You can hear your mom talking from a different floor and even hear whispers that are usually impossible to detect. It's great for people with hearing difficulties and for eavesdropping. But be careful using it in public places, as the sound becomes too loud to handle.

The idea is great, but the optional settings are all greyed out and Google doesn't provide any solutions. It would be cool to use it with a Bluetooth speaker in another room like a baby monitor, instead of only with wired headphones. Also, it would be awesome if it could run while media is playing, so I can stay alert during walks while listening to Google podcasts.

I was excited to try this, but it only works with wired headphones. In 2019, most phones don't have headphone jacks. This technology would be great if it supported Bluetooth headphones. No one wants to be tied to their phones. Thank you for the reply Google. Updated my review.

It's cool when it's working, but sometimes it acts up. It randomly stops sending sound to my headset even though the sound indicators show that it's getting audio from the phone mic. I'm not sure if it's an Android OS issue or a problem with the app.

It's been a year, and all the amplifiers I tried were not good. Finally, I discovered one by Google on the Play Store. It's called Google Sound Amplifier, and it's the best I've come across. Thank you, Google, for having an app for everything!

The volume on my Pixel 2 & Pixel Slate isn't loud enough to hear over restaurant noise, even with different earphones. Maybe I have hearing loss, but a slight increase in volume would help. The app is unhelpful as it only boosts microphone input. The user interface is very simple, so it's easy to understand. Overall, the app is not useful.
