Sound Meter is part of the Smart Tools collection's 4th set.
Have you ever been bothered by noisy neighbors?
This SPL (sound pressure level) meter app utilizes your device's built-in microphone to gauge noise levels in decibels (dB) and provides a reference.
Keep in mind that most smartphone microphones are tailored for human speech (300-3400Hz, 40-60dB). They don't require high-end microphones for voice calls.
As a result, the maximum value is capped by manufacturers, and extremely loud sounds (100+ dB) might not be detected. For instance, Moto G4 (max.94), Galaxy S6 (85dB), Nexus 5 (82dB)...
You can effortlessly verify whether you're speaking loudly during a lecture or if the TV volume you've adjusted isn't too high.
Refer to the 6th image. I calibrated major Android devices using an actual sound meter (dBA). The outcomes can be relied upon in regular noise ranges (40-70dB). Feel free to use it as a supplementary tool.
Sound Meter is primarily used to measure noise levels in the environment in order to assess the impact of noise on people's health, the working environment or equipment.
The app serve several main purposes:
Monitoring environmental noise:
Sound Meter can help monitor noise levels in different environments such as cities, industrial areas, residential areas and so on. This is important for assessing the impact of noise on the quality of life of residents.
Compliance testing:
Many places have regulations and standards regarding noise, and Sound Meter can be used to ensure that businesses and activities comply with these legal requirements and prevent excessive noise pollution.
Health assessment:
Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can have a negative impact on hearing and mental health. By measuring noise levels, it is possible to assess the potential health risks of noise.
Improve the working environment:
In industry and manufacturing, Sound Meter can be used to monitor noise levels in a factory or workshop, helping companies to take steps to reduce the impact of noise on employees and improve the comfort of the working environment.
Design optimization:
Engineers and designers can use Sound Meter to optimize the design of products or building structures to reduce the generation or transmission of noise and improve the experience of using products and buildings.
Scientific research and surveys:
Sound Meter is commonly used for research and data collection in fields such as environmental science and psychology to help scientists understand the impact of noise on ecosystems and human behavior.
