What is Spin Scooters?

Spin Scooters is an electric scooter-sharing company headquartered in San Francisco. Founded in 2017, it has become a leading micro-mobility company, aiming to be carbon-negative by 2025.

Originally a dockless bike-share service, Spin shifted focus to electric scooters, especially after being acquired by Ford. This move allowed the improvement of scooter quality, safety, and range.

How Much Do Spin Scooters Cost?

Spin Scooters offers a straightforward pricing structure: a $1 unlocking fee per ride, coupled with a variable per-minute rate ranging from 15 to 40 cents, depending on the city.

Spin

This fee applies regardless of the distance traveled or the ride duration. For instance, if you take a 30-minute ride in a city where the per-minute cost is 25 cents, your total cost would be $8.50.

Keep in mind, there are additional fees for rentals that exceed 24 hours.

Regarding payment, Spin provides flexibility with options like credit/debit cards and in-app wallets. They also periodically offer promotional codes and discounts to users, adding value to the service.

Spin

It’s worth noting that Spin’s payment system requires users to add funds in $10 increments.

This could mean that some of the balance may remain unused, especially for occasional users, making other e-scooter services potentially more appealing for those who don’t plan to use Spin regularly.

Know Before You Go

Don't Obstruct Traffic

When you park your scooter or bike, be careful not to block other people's sight or movement. Avoid blocking sidewalks, entrance ramps, doorways, and bus stops.

Obey Local Traffic Laws

Always stop for red lights and stop signs. Go with the flow of traffic and always yield to pedestrians. Only one person per scooter, and riders must be 18 years of age or older. As a rider, you have the same rights and responsibilities as the driver. But you can have more fun.

Click Before You Pedal

Always wear a helmet when riding a Spin scooter. Safety gear is essential!

Spin Scooters on the Street

You are most visible to drivers when riding in bike lanes or streets. Riding on grass, gravel, or the edge of a sidewalk can cause you to lose control of your scooter or fall. Stay safe and stay off the sidewalk.

How to Use Spin Scooters

Spin Scooters has an app that offers scooter rental services and allows you to request a ride. The Spin app is user-friendly and enables you to reap micro-mobility benefits, whether you’re a seasoned electric scooter driver or a first-time user. Here are the steps to use the app.

1. Download the App and Sign Up

To sign up for the Spin scooter service, you simply need to download the Spin app from your Google Play Store or iOS App Store.

Once you open the app:

Sign up with your Facebook account or email.

Scan your driver’s license if prompted by the app. This is only required in select cities due to local laws.

Open your menu and select the “Balance” tab.

Add your payment method — you can use your credit card, debit card, or Google Pay account — and load your first $10 into your balance. This currently unlocks a free first ride for new users.

While this process is pretty effortless, you should be aware of rider requirements hidden in Spin’s user agreement before actually using the service.

For example, Spin states that users must:

Be at least 18 years old

Wear a helmet and tied sneakers while using Spin scooters

Inspect their scooter for proper charge and signs of excessive wear before operating

2. Locate Scooters

You can check the app for available scooters when you need a ride. The app shows the proximity of nearby scooters in real time, allowing you to choose the nearest and most convenient one for your upcoming journey.

3. Unlock your Scooter

Spin Scooters have scannable codes that you can scan using your camera. Once you reach the selected scooter, you can use your camera to scan the code on the handlebars to unlock the scooter.

This action initiates the pairing process between your app and the scooter. It will allow you to begin the ride and have the payment deducted based on the distance traveled.

Before you ride, you should check the scooter for safety. Ensure that the tires are properly inflated and there are no signs of damage.

You can also try the brakes to see if they’re responsive before you start your ride. If you notice any issues, you should report them through the app.

4. Start your Ride

Spin

When you unlock the scooter, it will emit a confirming beep, acknowledging that it has been properly paired with the app. Now, it’s time to press the throttle to start your ride.

While riding your scooter in the bike lane, you can check the app for real-time information about your ride, including the speed, distance traveled, distance remaining, and battery life. It’s important not to use your scooter in a no-ride zone to avoid getting into trouble.

The app also suggests the fastest and safest route to your destination, guaranteeing an efficient, eco-friendly ride.

5. End your Ride

After reaching your destination, park your Spin Scooter in a designated area where you’ll have access to Spin chargers or anywhere where it doesn’t block the way.

After that, you can click End Ride on your app to finish it safely. You’ll receive details about the completed ride, including the price deducted from your payment method.

The scooters are amazing. But the app - oh my, it's so frustrating. I wanted to rent more for my family, but it was a nightmare. I spent half an hour trying to get another one going. And guess what? The app decided to crash on me. Next, ending the ride was just as bad. It took 4 extra minutes, and I'm pretty sure that bumped up the bill. I don't think I'll be riding again after feeling like I was tricked. Pun not intended.

We had a bad experience with the Bird scooter. They made us pay $4 even before we could unlock it. But the lock didn't come off, so we couldn't use it at all. So, we switched to a Spin scooter. It only cost us $9 for an entire hour of riding. We could ride as many times and for as long as we wanted within that one-hour limit. It was much better and cheaper than Scoot. We truly recommend using Spin!

I had a problem with my first scooter as it wouldn't start, so I gave it back right away and got another one. Surprisingly, they charged me $2.93 for that. The ride on the second scooter was fine, but the start button was a bit weird and didn't work every time. You had to press it a few times. Sometimes it suddenly sped up, so you had to be cautious. It took me around 25 minutes to go 2 miles, and they charged me $12.85, which seems quite pricey. I couldn't find an option in the app to dispute the charge for the first scooter.

The infographic on the scooter was really beaten up. All I could make out was "$1 to ride." I've never tried one of these before and thought it would be a safe, affordable way to get home. The app's main screen didn't mention anything else. It made me feel like I was being tricked. If they had clearly stated from the beginning that there was a cost per minute, I would have chosen differently.

The pricing was unclear and it caused confusion. I downloaded the app for the first time and it said $9.99 for 1 hour, but the ride turned out to be very short and cost $6. It was puzzling. When we tried to lock up a bicycle, the app didn't stop the ride due to an issue. We had to call the customer service number. They didn't refund the entire ride. The experience was disappointing due to the misleading pricing and the problem with ending the ride.

My scooter wouldn't lock for nearly 20 minutes despite my efforts to park it in various spots. It made us really late for dinner. When I reached out to support, I didn't get a refund and was actually charged for the whole ride. I've contacted them two more times since then but haven't received any help. This first time using Spin was terrible, and I won't be using their services again.

I had a really bad experience with this app. It's a mess! The features don't even work, like the referral code. The app looks like it's still being built - some menus are broken and titles show code instead of words. I tried to end a session without moving the scooter and got charged for it, even though the app said it was free. It was a horrible experience with this app and service.

I really like using Spin scooters more than other options. However, the app has been giving me a hard time. It often freezes and doesn't show my location on the map. This makes it tricky to find the scooters. It used to work fine before, so I think there might be an issue with the app now. Another problem is that it freezes when I try to take pictures of how I parked the scooter. It's frustrating because they say you can get penalized if you don't upload a picture. Please, could you fix these issues? Thank you for listening to my feedback.

Riding Spin scooters is super fun, you simply can't help but smile! I've tried other similar scooters like Lime and Bird in our city, but Spin scooters feel safer to me. I'm not sure why, but while riding other scooters, there were times where they suddenly stopped moving, leading to falls. Spin scooters have never given me that issue, which is why I trust only Spin for my rides.
