Star Walk History
Vito Technology presented the first Star Walk for iOS users in November 2008 — almost a year after the first iPhone was released. The idea of developing such an app was in the company since 2001; however, only the sensors implemented in the iPhone helped to realize it.
Eight months after polishing and promoting, Star Walk went to the App Store’s top. In addition to its commercial success, Star Walk was very well received by critics. Since 2009, Star Walk has received various awards, including Apple Design Award and Parents’ Choice Gold Award.
In 2014, Star Walk was released for Android, and shortly after, an update from the original Star Walk - Star Walk 2 - was premiered. The new version received breathtaking visuals, smoother, better control, more content, and 3D models of celestial bodies.
Vito Technology continues to improve the Star Walk apps. Over a decade of existence, Star Walk became a recognizable brand with more than 20 million users worldwide. In 2021, the company presented a brand-new Sky Tonight app to delight both astronomy newcomers and experienced stargazers.
FAQ
How to Use Visual Effects?
Love observing the night sky? Want to look at it in a new way? Make the sky look more dramatic and create a special atmosphere with visual effects of Star Walk 2. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1. Tap the menu icon in the lower right corner of the screen, choose “Settings” and go to “Visual effects”. You will see all visual effects available in Star Walk 2.
Step 2. Decide whether you want to enable/disable atmosphere, horizon, water, constellation flare and meteor showers.
You can manage visual effects in the settings of the app at any time.
What to do if sky objects in the app are displaced from their true positions?
If the representation of the sky on your screen seems to be inaccurate, try the following steps.
Step 1. Make sure that Star Walk 2 is allowed access to your location data.
Step 2. Calibrate your device by moving it in a figure eight pattern three to five times.
Step 3. If the problem remains, try manual calibration. Find a prominent and bright object in the sky above you – like the Sun, the Moon, Venus, or Jupiter. It’s better to lower the magnitude in the app’s settings so that only the brightest objects are left on the screen. Touch the screen with two fingers and drag the sky horizontally until the celestial object you’ve chosen corresponds with its representation in the app. Due to technical restrictions, you’ll probably have to repeat the procedure every time you open the app.
