How does a Tor browser work?

So how does Tor work? In its simplest form, a Tor browser use onion routing to direct and encrypt all traffic, offering users a high level of anonymity. The network transmits traffic through three layers of international network nodes called onion routers:

Entry nodes, which form the first layer of encryption and enable the connection to the Tor network.

A series of middle nodes fully encrypt web traffic to ensure anonymity.

Exit nodes, which further encrypt data before it reaches the final server.

Because onion routing effectively encrypts and relays data through multiple network layers, the Tor browser is highly effective at protecting user data and concealing IP addresses.

What is the Tor browser used for?

There are several questions worth asking about Tor, including “What does a Tor browser do?” and how its use differs from regular browsers. The Tor browser is primarily a way to browse the web anonymously. As such, the main reason it is used is to avoid surveillance and ensure privacy while online. However, many people also use Tor to access services that regular browsers cannot reach, such as .onion sites which only function on the onion network, such as DuckDuckGo, a privacy-enhanced search engine, which offers a .onion version of its search engine, which doesn't track user data, providing a more private search experience.

In addition, because Tor is closely linked with the dark web, some users use this for particular types of research, and also to carry out illegal activities.

Oh, I found this awesome browser that comes with a built-in VPN and no annoying ads! It's super handy because it lets me visit websites from anywhere without exposing my phone's identity. The only downside is that after the recent updates, I couldn't download Firefox add-ons anymore, except for a few. I hope they can sort this out or show us how to get the add-ons back on our phones. Thought I'd share this info since their customer service isn't very responsive.

On June 28th of this year, I tried out a privacy-focused browser and found that it was functioning well. However, I was frustrated because it didn't block pop-up ads or banner ads, including those on YouTube, which made my internet browsing experience annoying. Although I could have installed an adblock plug-in to solve this issue, the Tor community warned against it, saying it would compromise privacy. Therefore, I ultimately decided to uninstall the browser since it wasn't serving my needs effectively.

Hey, just a friendly reminder to keep things simple when it comes to privacy. Focus on two main things: disable scripts (especially if you're on a desktop) and set your security settings to medium or high to block website JavaScript from snooping on your device. By sticking to these basics, everyone using Tor will blend in – and that's what we want! Making lots of tweaks might actually make you stand out online, which could connect you back to your Tor habits. Stay safe online! - A cyber security enthusiast
