Historical Background

Germany almost succeeded in cutting British supply lines during the First World War, and the U-Bootwaffe adopted a similar approach with their U-boat campaign as soon as the Second World War broke out. U-boats were meant to sink as much Allied shipping as possible (which applied first and foremost to Allied convoys providing wartime supplies to Great Britain). The main role of the U-boats was therefore to fight the British merchant navy. Initially it lacked the equipment and procedures to defend its vessels, but things were soon to improve with the introduction of convoys, improved anti-submarine warfare technology, as well as the increase in RAF Coastal Command’s capabilities. All of that amounted to an increasingly tough technological struggle between the U-Boot-waffe and the Allied force.

Tutorial Beginnings

Boarding the ship

Once the game starts, you find yourself a fresh faced officer named Hilbert Kohler, standing before your assigned ship. It's time to report in to the Captain, Klaus Graf.

The game starts in FPP (First Person Perspective), and there are three UI (User Interface) elements you'll need to be aware of. Your selected character info, your objective, and your Uboat status bar (more on the ship status later, however the green envelope will indicate there is an unread message in the ship's log).

Uboat Attack

The selected character info box is in the lower left, and contains a bunch of information about the currently active officer you are controlling. In the top row, left to right, we have officer type (Iron Cross indicates a Leader type) and experience bar (currently at 0), name and health (Hilbert Kohler, 4 bars), a slot for worn personal worn equipment (currently empty), and a slot for backpack/carried item (currently contains a briefcase). The bottom row contains role menu (currently unassigned), character customization button, sleep button, and buttons to assign/relieve assistant crew.

Uboat Attack

The objective list in the upper right contains your current mission ("Beginnings") and a list of active objectives. Objectives are indicated by a round green solid circle. Right now there is only one objective, "Meet the captain".

To complete the current objective, walk up to the Captain (WASD controls, mouse look) and when you mouse shows the Talk symbol, left click to speak to the Captain. The officer standing next to him is an un-named General Admiral, who will be instructing us during the tutorial.

Uboat Attack

You'll notice three pieces of information about Captain Graf when you hover your mouse over him. The first is his name, the second is his health (4 bars, same as you), and a blue line indicating his current energy/stamina, which is full.

Captain Graf will greet you, and assign you two new objectives:

Leave the baggage at your bunk.

    Read the message from BdU.

New objectives always result in a notice box appearing, coupled with the sound of a drumbeat.

Uboat Attack

While these are your current objectives, you will not yet see a green objective marker for either one. This is because there is an intermediary objective, you need to board the ship first! Instead you'll see a green objective marker with an up arrow on the conning tower. Walk across the gangway to the deck, walk around the tower until you find the ladder, and when the UI shows a ladder icon and "Climb Up", left click to climb up into the conning tower.

You may see some other white UI symbols, don't worry about those for now, they are for indicating things you can use. We'll talk about those later.

After climbing the tower, descend into the UBoat by climbing down the hatch. Click "Climb" and then use forward/backward (W/S) to climb up/down. You may need to click a closed hatch to open it first. The first ladder leads into the inside of the conning tower, then the next ladder down leads to the Control Room. At this point your two objective markers will appear.

Uboat Attack

The first objective is to put your briefcase in your bunk. As you walk forward, you'll automatically duck to go through hatches and bulkheads. Walk to your bunk, and left click to place your briefcase. Note that objectives in your mission list can be completed in any order.

Uboat Attack

Next up we have to read the message from BdU. BdU is the Supreme Commander of the Kriegsmarine's UBoat fleets. The message is contained in your ship's Journal, which can be accessed by clicking on the writing desk beside the Captain's bunk.

Left click to open the Skipper's Log. The Log currently contains two entries, ordered by date. Under September 1939 we have Orders and Activity. Orders are messages from BdU related to your missions, including events that occurred during your mission such as sinking ships or reporting sightings. Activity is where you can write your own notes.

If you click on Orders, you will see details of the current mission.

    03 September 1939, Berlin

Before noon on September 1, the transport vessel Falcon left the port in Edinburgh. We have information that a radar technology prototype has been loaded onto it. We have reasons to think that the ship was sunk on its original course on the North Sea as a result of sabotage.

Your task is to find the wreckage, retrieve the equipment and if possible avoid being detected by the British units. We cannot be linked to the sabotage or attempts to seize the radar.

Targeting

At the following stations, the following equipment can be used in manual mode to set the torpedo targeting:

    UZO

    Attack Periscope

    Observation Periscope

The following tools are all measurement tools, which the crew will then use to calculate the targeting information for a successful torpedo launch.

Identification Book

Uboat Attack

Filled with silhouettes and all sorts of technical information, used to visually identify ship type. Needed for Stadimeter and Chronometer because we need to know the height and length of the target.

Stadimeter Tool

Uboat Attack

Similar in principle to a sextant, a stadimeter is an optical device for estimating the range to an object of known height by measuring the angle between the top and bottom of the object. By adjusting the dial to line up the highest part of a ship with the "ghost" image of the water line. Needed for Chronometer because the time it takes the ship to pass through a relative arc will depend on its distance.

Chronometer Tool

Uboat Attack

Once distance is known, you can calculate speed using a chronometer. This is best done at speed 0, since the change in the uboat's distance over time will affect the calculation. Place the reticle on the front of the bow and click "Start". Click "Stop" when the whole ship passes by. The game will do the math to translate this arc over time to a speed.

Course

Uboat Attack

The "Attack Disk" is a circular slide rule for calculating "Angle On Bow" (AOB), the angle between the target's current course and the uboat's current position (as seen from the target), which will help to calculate the intercept point.

Currently the game automatically sets the Relative Bearing (white band) and Compass Rose, the player can only set the Target Disk (by matching the visual image of the target's angle) to get the AOB.

QUICK START GUIDE

When the mission begins, you should:

    1. Plot a course towards mission area.

    2. Set the diesels to full speed ahead.

    3. Set the course as plotted.

    4. Send observers to the Bridge and order them to watch their sectors.

When you encounter enemy vessels:

    1. Keep your distance or dive to avoid getting spotted (remember that diving reduces your speed by half).

    2. Before deciding to attack, identify how many merchants (bigger ships) and escorts (smaller ships) there are in the group.

    3. Avoid ending up in front of the escorts, as they can detect you with their sonar even if you are under the surface.

When you decide to attack:

    1. Update the tactical map.

    2. Maneuver on the surface (as this gives you a speed advantage) but keep at least four miles away from the enemy to avoid getting spotted.

    3. Setting the same course as the enemy is often the easiest way to assume the desired attack position, which is ahead of the enemy and to their side. This will allow for a broadside approach.

    4. Dive and set the course towards the ‘broadside’ mark on the attack disk.

    5. Monitor the approach via the periscope or the hydrophone. Correct your course and speed if necessary.

    6. Ready the torpedo crew and engage the torpedo data computer (TDC) once the enemy is about 3 miles away.

When attacked by a destroyer:

    1. If on the surface, dive immediately or the U-boat will sustain heavy damage! The enemy will also try ramming the U-boat if given the chance.

    2. When you hear the sonar ‘ping’ underwater, it means the destroyer has found you and is closing in for a depth charge attack!

    3. To avoid the attack, make a sharp turn and dive deeper as quickly as you can.

    4. If you keep going in a straight line and at the same depth, you are making things too easy for the enemy!

Sustaining critical damage is very likely in this situation.

A new part was just added to this game, but it's not good. The game is really fun to play and the graphics are great. They keep making it better and better. It's definitely worth playing.

So, there was this game that I used to play when I wanted something quick but fun. It was perfect for me because I didn't have a lot of time to spare. However, after they updated it recently, everything went downhill. I had worked hard to make progress in the game, especially with my submarine upgrades. But the developers decided to make things more difficult and wiped out all my upgrades. Now, it feels like I'm back to square one, except this time, the cost of getting back those upgrades is way higher, like a hundred times more! On top of that, I'm bombarded with annoying commercials every step of the way. It's just not the same game anymore.

Spent $9.99 to get a better submarine in the game. Closed the app and when I opened it again, the upgrade was missing. Couldn't get it back or ask for help in the app. Clicked on the button to recover the upgrade, but got a fake message saying the recovery was done. Later on, got the upgrade I paid for. The game now has more things to do since the last time I played it. It's still easy but fun.

You're having so much fun playing the game and it keeps getting even more exciting with each update. The developers are doing an amazing job. If you haven't played it yet, you're really missing out. I absolutely adore this game, and the enhancements have been truly impressive. You all are fantastic!

This game has so many ads, making it hard to play. You have to watch ads all the time before you can do anything, which is annoying. And there are too many glitches in the game. It freezes and disconnects a lot. It seems like not a lot of thought was put into designing this game.

Game has awesome graphics and decent gameplay. You get nice rewards for watching ads, but now they started playing ads between missions, before and after. The missions are very short, usually less than a minute. So if you watch an ad for rewards and then have more ads during gameplay, it's just too many ads. It interrupts the flow of the game.

The game is fun, but not challenging enough. It feels like something is missing. The enemy ships hardly ever shoot back. When they do, I'm not sure if it's effective. Upgrades for guns and planes are available, but there's no way to activate them. The underwater levels are a bit more challenging, and I want to see more of them.

The game sounds interesting, but it's frustrating that the ads won't load properly, making it difficult to progress. It took me ages once just waiting for an ad to finish. Even after reinstalling, the issue persisted. I'm okay with watching ads to support the game, but they need to work smoothly. I'm not willing to pay for this kind of experience.

I thought the game would be fun, but then I saw an offer to pay $5 to remove ads. A 30-second ad popped up as soon as I started playing. If you think my time is only worth watching ads for $5, then no thanks. I'll just delete the game and not be bothered by ads. Thanks for showing me how much you value me. Delete.
